How would you pronounce the name Mila?

  1. Mee-la
  2. My-la

It's my favourite name right now but I worry people would pronounce it wrong

Thanks in advance

Me-La.

chipshopElvis · 03/01/2021 10:10

Would pronounce as Miller.

Chilldonaldchill · 03/01/2021 10:11

Meela.
Because I know lots of middle aged Eastern European women called this whose full names are Ludmila/Radmila etc.

WeBuiltThisBuffetOnSausageRoll · 03/01/2021 10:25

I'd incline towards Meela, but then that would make me think she'd been named after a washing machine or vacuum cleaner!

Can't ever imagine calling a child Hoover, Hotpoint or Zanussi - and yet, it is a lovely-sounding name!

WeBuiltThisBuffetOnSausageRoll · 03/01/2021 10:34

Obviously, a few might go for 'Myla', but I think the problem is that most would think it's 'Meela' or 'Miller' BUT not quite know which one; so the natural thing to do for a lot would be to make a non-committal sound that falls somewhere between the two in the hope that it would be heard as whichever the proper one is - at least before they know her properly (assuming they remember subsequently).

It seems a shame to potentially have people mumbling your child's name rather than confidently asserting it.

Makes me think of Jack Dee's joke from years ago, about ordering in McDonalds but not knowing how to properly pronounce Filet O' Fish - and not wanting to embarrass himself!

lcdododo · 03/01/2021 10:55

Meela like kunis

SmeleanorSmellstrop · 03/01/2021 11:14

Mee-la

SmeleanorSmellstrop · 03/01/2021 11:14

No wait - My-la

Gosh, i have no idea.

I think i must use both interchangably 🤔

TicTacTwo · 03/01/2021 11:21

Mee-la as in Kunis.

Meila would be May-la as Mei is a name pronounced May and I'd assume it was like Leila

MercyBodle · 03/01/2021 11:53

Mee-lah. But I have come across it pronounced as Mill-ah.

partyatthepalace · 03/01/2021 13:32

I'd say Milla!

Pinkjellies · 03/01/2021 13:33

My-la but I’m not based in England if that helps any (although still part of the UK)

YoniAndGuy · 03/01/2021 13:36

Myla, like Miles and Milo.

You will get a LOT of My-la.

Meila - definitely even more My-la! Do not do that!

kulaexchange · 03/01/2021 13:38

Ohh read The Castle of Tangled Magic by Sophie Anderson - brilliant kids book (aged 7 up) and the castle is called castle Mila.

NataliaOsipova · 03/01/2021 13:39

My - la. Would also pronounce Meila the same.

LadyMonicaBaddingham · 03/01/2021 13:41

I'd say that spelling as Mee-la, but there are so many different variants of this name. It's the new Ella - I don't like it at all

FedUpAtHomeTroels · 03/01/2021 14:02

My La

CorpusCallosum · 03/01/2021 14:23

I would say Myla.

I have a name that can be pronounced a couple of ways, it doesn't bother me if people go for the version that isn't how i would say it. They're both 'right' 💁🏻‍♀️

mommyofone2019 · 03/01/2021 14:49

@Trinityhome mee-la xx

LadyCatStark · 03/01/2021 15:04

Meela but Meila would definitely be pronounced Mayla like Leila.

Alakasam · 03/01/2021 15:25

Mee-la, as in Mila Kunis

Hailtomyteeth · 03/01/2021 15:28

Mila=Miller.

Myla = M-eye-ler

Mela = Meller

For 'Meela' you need the double ee.

PrivateParty · 03/01/2021 15:34

Meela like mila kunis..

StacySoloman · 03/01/2021 15:37

I’d say Meela like Mila Kunis.

tofuschnitzel · 03/01/2021 15:39

Your comment is ridiculous. It's a Slavic name, nothing to do with washing appliances. Not every name is English.

I would pronounce it as Meela, as Mila is a popular Slavic name.
