Sophie - boring or classic?

We really like the name Sophie but I’m concerned that it has been too overused in recent years. What are your thoughts please?

I think it's lovely! I hear it a lot more among people my age than among children, so to me it is quite unusual for a baby/child and not overused at all.

MrsWobble3 · 31/12/2020 18:15

I think it may be my favourite name. I was worried it was too popular so didn’t use it for dd1. But then before dd1 was 3 months old I had been introduced to 3 other babies with the name we chose instead and no Sophie’s. So dd2 is Sophie.

RecipeStealingBitch · 31/12/2020 18:16

I love it

Fancycrackers · 31/12/2020 18:18

I like it. Much nicer than Sophia which I imagine is more popular.

partyatthepalace · 31/12/2020 18:23

It’s very popular, but it’s been pretty actively used since the 70s (like Emma) so I think it’s pretty much a classic now. If you aren’t worried about having a few around go for it.

ADRIENNEthroughbloodshoteyes · 31/12/2020 18:26

It’d beautiful but it’s sooooooo overused right now.

As is Isabel. They are both lovely names to say out loud, they feel elegant, but they are ten a penny too.

PlantPotting · 31/12/2020 18:27

If you look at the statistics, the popularity of the name has fallen each and every year since the mid 1990s
It will have left the top 30 by the time the official stats are released.
Much rarer than it used to be
I love it

IamnotwhouthinkIam · 31/12/2020 18:56

It's a classic (and one of the few names ending in -ie I like - others are Sylvie, Amelie, Coralie and Rosalie, because they also don't sound too cutesy imo).

Sophie also has a lovely meaning, but with Sophia and Sofia also in the top 30 too - I think it feels too overused personally (like all the Evie's, Eva's, Ava's and Evelyn's or Isabelle's, Isabella's and Arabella's - the names just blend together).

EileenGC · 31/12/2020 18:59

Love it!

danascully96 · 31/12/2020 19:01

Wet to me, but nice and classic, I’d say. Although I don’t personally know any older folks named Sophie and I don’t see the name Sophie appear in old movies... so maybe it’s more of a vintage resurrected with such great popularity for the past few decades that it’s become a modern classic? Anyway, it’s a fine name either way and not as boring as Sarah by any stretch.

jellybe · 31/12/2020 19:02

Classic but I prefer Sophia.

BumbleBeegu · 31/12/2020 20:29

Beautiful name OP. Much nicer than many of the currently 'trendy' names bandied about on MN. Classically beautiful...how could that ever be boring? I don't understand how people are saying this to be honest! All the classically beautiful names get called boring on here...names like Alice, Emma, Emily, Rebecca...lovely names. Go for it ❤️

DramaAlpaca · 31/12/2020 20:31

I see it as traditional rather than classic, but it's not in the least bit boring. I love the name and don't care one bit about popularity.

bookworm14 · 31/12/2020 20:41

It’s classic (and is dropping down the popularity list). Go for it.

blowinahoolie · 31/12/2020 20:42

The Tiger who came to tea Sophie. Beautiful nameSmile

uqueen · 31/12/2020 20:51

Love it

AfterSchoolWorry · 31/12/2020 20:56

I think Sophia is nicer!

SnowyWiseOwlWan · 31/12/2020 20:59

I like it, prefer it to Sophia.

It is very popular though.

Wha about Susie?

Jenasaurus · 31/12/2020 21:01

My great great grandma was Sophie, and so is my DD, I love the name but there seem a lot of them my DDs age, she is 25

bluedomino · 31/12/2020 23:19

It's a bit dull. A very beige name, like Charlotte or Emma. It makes me think the parents will be really boring and bland, people who strive to be normal.

Ivalueloyaltyaboveallelse · 31/12/2020 23:22

Lovely classic name.

Tambourina · 31/12/2020 23:34

Love it

TokyoSushi · 31/12/2020 23:39

Totally fabulous name, as is Emma Wink

But I do know about 9 Sophie's!

IdblowJonSnow · 31/12/2020 23:44

I like it but it is very safe. Sophia is even more popular.
My name was very overused so there were lots of kids at my school w my name. I would have preferred something a bit different.

Charlottejbt · 31/12/2020 23:56

I like it, but it's still very popular. Sophia was always my favourite name but I don't know if I'd have given it to DD1 if I'd known how popular it would become.
