Sophie - boring or classic?

We really like the name Sophie but I’m concerned that it has been too overused in recent years. What are your thoughts please?

I’ve worked in schools for the last 15 years and have only known two Sophie’s and one Sophia.

It’s one of my favourite names.

sandon · 31/12/2020 17:34

Bit boring for me, but I quite like 'out there' names.

Imissmoominmama · 31/12/2020 17:34

I didn’t put that apostrophe in- autocorrect did!

ZenNudist · 31/12/2020 17:36

Classic and timeless not boring. I love Sophia more but think that will date. Plus a pp points out Sophie means wisdom.

It's like Emily, you can never go wrong with it.

tryingtocatchthewind · 31/12/2020 17:37

It’s a lovely name and not boring to me but I’d share your concerns about how many Sophie’s are around now. My name was very popular in the 80s and trying to do zoom calls where 3 out of 10 of us have the same name is a nightmare haha

YourWurstNightmare · 31/12/2020 17:43

It's much nicer than Sophia, which sounds like a little old lady.

SingingSands · 31/12/2020 17:46

I have a teenage Sophie, it's a lovely name and we joke that the meaning "wisdom" has helped her with her excellent exam results so far Grin

Ismellphantoms · 31/12/2020 17:49

It's a family name going back generations in France. We have one. It's a classic and won't date.

Lonecatwithkitten · 31/12/2020 17:49

My DD is Sophie she is now 17, in all those years we have only ever meet one other child named Sophie, lots of Sophias.
Sophie means wisdom. You never have to spell, never have to re say it everyone gets it straight away.
The only real shortening is Soph.
Who inspired my choice probably Sophie Raworth, Sophie Countess of Wessex and Sophie Ellis -Bexter all of who were in the news in 2003.

Jamjar77 · 31/12/2020 17:50

I love it, but then I am biased as I have a toddler Sophie. I do prefer it to Sophia, which I think is more trendy at the moment and will date. The only other Sophies I know are adults.

ellenpartridge · 31/12/2020 17:51

Lovely and classic.

chrismartinsfuturewife · 31/12/2020 17:54

Classic and pretty name

Roselilly36 · 31/12/2020 17:55

I love Sophie, really nice name, prefer it to Sophia.

Soooh · 31/12/2020 17:55

Name changed for this for obvious reasons. But I am a Sophie and in my late 40s. When growing up I hated that my name was so unusual and so I could never find anything ‘named’ with Sophie on it. It was all Sarah, Clare and Paula. It used to really upset me! Then the older I got the more I grew to love it so it makes me laugh when I hear on here now that people find it Classic. It was so unusual when I was a kid. It may be Classic now because it has had recent popularity. But that goes to show how name trends go. I could never call Sophie Classic. That implies it has been around forever and I may be old but not that old! If you love it use it. I have grown to love it.

SirVixofVixHall · 31/12/2020 17:55

Classic. The only Sophie I know is around 59, and an absolute beauty.

Cam2020 · 31/12/2020 17:57

I like it. Sophia was on my shortlist.

lyinginthegutterstaringatstars · 31/12/2020 17:57

Very cute for a baby but silly for an adult. Very boring.

Mumoftwoinprimary · 31/12/2020 17:57

Names are only ever a maximum of two of the following:-

Beautiful
Classical
Unusual

For the simple reason that if you find one that is all three then every other bugger will nab it and then it won’t be unusual any more.

Sophie is beautiful and classical. That is the best two to have in my view.

JustanotherTuesday · 31/12/2020 17:57

I think it is a pretty name. I only know one Sophie, she is two years old.

AlexaShutUp · 31/12/2020 18:00

I think it's a lovely name.

Meredithgrey1 · 31/12/2020 18:00

I think with all classic names, some people are going to think they’re boring (and with all boring names, some people will think they’re classic).
I think Sophie is classic, but I prefer those sorts of classic names. I have an unusual name, with an unusual spelling, so perhaps favoured the opposite when picking DD’s name, which is along a similar vein to Sophie (not in sound but in a similar classic/possibly seen as boring way)

Soooh · 31/12/2020 18:01

@lyinginthegutterstaringatstars silly as an adult!!! That makes me laugh as a late 40s adult. Have never felt it was a silly name for an adult.

june2007 · 31/12/2020 18:03

Classical but a mit "meh". I think last year we had a sophie in every room at the nursery where I work.

ThatIsNotMyUsername · 31/12/2020 18:04

In DS’s school there’s a joke that if you don’t know a girls name you assume it’s ‘Sophie’ or ‘Sophia’. Loads of them (6th form).

Nice name but... so many of them!

daisypond · 31/12/2020 18:08

I like it. I know a Sophie aged in their 90s, and ones in their 60s, 50s, 40s all the way to teens and toddlers. It’s nice.
