We really like the name Sophie but I’m concerned that it has been too overused in recent years. What are your thoughts please?

Thank you so much everyone for your comments! Really helpful! I have loved the name for years but it’s such a shame that everyone else does now. I think we will use it though unless we managed to find a name that we prefer but I’m been searching for that for a while!

Classic (very popular round here though)

Whenwillow · 01/01/2021 08:32

Well, I think names become popular simply because they are lovely. So it's a great choice. Good luck with your baby Flowers

Both!

Also, the classic names never sound dated. My DCs have classic names - there are people in care homes with their names, and I'm still reading them on MN as popular choices for new babies. Funnily enough, there were occasionally a couple of kids in their classes with the same name, but I noticed that 'unusual' names became popular all at once, so at the time (90s) the classes were overrun with Calebs and Cains etc. I'm sure their parents thought they were being original, but it didn't pan out that way.
I don't understand the obsession with finding a name that nobody else has Confused
Enjoy your Sophie!

Boring. Quite a wet name too, like Soppy.

Justcashnosweets · 01/01/2021 08:51

I really like the name Sophie. Much nicer than the overused names of the moment like Amelia, Ella, Evie etc.

Probably because we all have different opinions and don't all want classic names Smile

DD10 is Sophia and we call her Sophie more often than not. It was never my favourite name but dh really wanted it. It’s nice enough and there are a couple in her year at school but not as many Kelly’s that were in my year at school. Shit name.

Due to my lovely dd I have grown to love her name.

It’s boring.

Marlena1 · 01/01/2021 11:10

I have one and I love it. I picked a long time before having kids though and didn't use for dd1 as I thought was too popular and DP wanted something else. When DD2 came it went with DD1's name so we used it but I do regret not picking something more unusual with both tbh. I do really love it though and may have regretted not using it.

Boring and also a bit dated to my ears. I think maybe because Sophia/Sofia is more popular and therefore feels more ‘now’. I’m not a fan of Sophie though sorry, bland and unimaginative.

YoniAndGuy · 01/01/2021 18:43

Oh it's lovely.

It's just such a lovely sound. And yes, totally classic and elegant.

I think now is a good time to use Sophie - it's far less popular than Sophia, which seems totally different and much less nice.

If you've always loved it, USE IT - I think you will regret it if you look for reasons not to use the name you automatically just love.
