Which girls and boys names should I avoid due to being too popular?
First time mam so not around children that often.

I once taught a class with 7 Megans / Meghans. I don't think there were any others in the rest of the Primary school. That group will be able 20 now!

Cbeebiesrehab · 14/11/2020 09:03

I think it’s quite regional.
SW here and I would say
Florence
Arthur
Teddy
Theo
Logan
Boys names ending in IE
Olivia
Amelia/Emilia

Willow
Girls names starting with a vowel
Darcy/Darcey/Darcie

Cbeebiesrehab · 14/11/2020 09:03

Oh and Mia

Pops55 · 14/11/2020 10:36

Thankyou. We seem to prefer classic names that are easy to pronounce/spell and won't date badly, so far these names are all in the top 100 so I guess there will be a chance of meeting/going to school with others with the same name, however I do agree its more important to pick a name we love.

I agree, it varies lots by region. Our London school has Layla, Freya, Iris, Erin, Niamh, Maya, Max, Leo and Arthur strongly represented. I've not come across one Oliver, Harry, Charlie or Emily. The odd Olivia or Isabelle, but both are more rare than Olive and Eliza. There are more babies called Otis in the area than you would expect.

Thefaceofboe · 14/11/2020 10:43

For me, Isla is the most popular girls name in my setting. Followed by Amelia, Olivia, Isabella (or other combinations). Imogen is also very popular

Boys are Oliver, Alfie, Freddie, Finley.

Thefaceofboe · 14/11/2020 10:45

It definitely depends on the area too, I’ve never looked after an Evie, Willow, Theo or Arlo which seem to be mentioned as too popular on here. Where as in my current setting we have 4 Islas in the toddler room and 3 in the baby room (it’s a big nursery)

ManxomeFoe · 14/11/2020 10:46

Just pick a name you love. DS is in a class of 27 and there are no repetitions even though there are children with very popular names like Theo, Ava, Sophie, Grace, Jack, Evie. There seems to be more diversity now than my class in the early 90s where we had 4 Lauras, 3 Emmas and 3 Sarahs!

Littlefluffyclouds13 · 14/11/2020 10:49

Just pick the name you like?
I've had two dc, I could never get worked up about this.
I'm a teacher as well!!

Whatsyourflava · 14/11/2020 10:52

There's loads of names outside the top 100 that fit your criteria @Pops55

Laurence
Louisa
Peter
Lucy (inside top 100 but falling)
Margaret
Matthew
Audrey
Seth
Nathan
Miles
Clementine

Loads more obviously. Just a few examples

Pluto986 · 14/11/2020 11:48

Around here toddler names I hear repeated a lot are Noah, Alfie, Finn, Theo, Arlo, Reggie, Arthur, Jack, Oliver, Freya, Evie, Isla, Ava, Mia, Florence

But I think just go for a name you like. As someone else said there’s so much more diversity with names now it won’t be like when we were at school! I think now the most popular boys name (Oliver) had around 5000 named it in the year where as 20 years ago it was more like 10,000 (Jack). So even the most popular name has half the repeats it used to have!

IOwnDogsNotFrogs · 14/11/2020 12:18

One year group had 5 Olivers out of 60 kids at my school.
Harry is popular and Charlie. Louis, Leo, Max.

For girls I know tons of Amys, flower names are really done to death too.
Olivias I know about 3 thousand of.

BorderlineHappy · 14/11/2020 13:02

Theres loads of Logans and Zak,Zac,Zack where i am.
Also Leon seems quite popular.

Just pick the name you like. Otherwise it will annoy you.

SionnachRua · 14/11/2020 13:06

In my school we are overrun with Emily, Charlotte, Sophie, Sophia, Genevieve, Ella, Isabelle, Olivia, Lily, Amelia, Freya, Chloe etc names...all the usual ones really.

Thefaceofboe · 14/11/2020 19:33

@SionnachRua Genevieve isn’t exactly popular is it? ^

SionnachRua · 14/11/2020 19:36

@Thefaceofboe weirdly enough we have a rake of them - not quite one in every class but not far off that at all! Some of the classes have more than one...I sometimes wonder if it annoys any of the parents.

TheChristmasPrincess · 14/11/2020 19:46

Charlie
Alfie
Theodore/Teddy/Theo

Olivia
Evie
Sophie/Sophia

Seriously, there are so many Olivias about at the moment, I’m sick of them 😉😆

Thefaceofboe · 14/11/2020 21:07

@SionnachRua how funny I don’t know 1 Genevieve and always thought it was a really unusual name (it’s actually on my list that’s why I asked). Where abouts are you?

firstworldprobhunz · 14/11/2020 21:51

My oldest is 4 now, but I joined a baby music class, there were 10 babies, two called Heidi. A friend from school had a baby and also called it Heidi that same year. Never met any before or since.

In my son's class two Ellie's, two Sophias, but I think that isn't as popular now. No duplicates on the boys.

firstworldprobhunz · 14/11/2020 21:56

Trying to think of any duplicates within my friends. Couple of Islas, couple of Harry's. I know children with many of the names mentioned, but not more than one. What names do you like @Pops55 ?

BorderlineHappy · 14/11/2020 22:38

@SionnachRua im in Dublin as well.i have never heard a child never mind multiples called Genevieve.

SionnachRua · 14/11/2020 22:57

@BorderlineHappy you should see my school then - we have loads! I'd never met a Genevieve before I started working here.
