Which girls and boys names should I avoid due to being too popular?
First time mam so not around children that often.

Like I said though, I do wonder if it annoys any parent who picked Genevieve thinking she'd be the only one...and then joined us where we have Genevieves around every corner.

JanewaysBun · 14/11/2020 23:09

Sienna
Charlotte
Eloise
George
James
Harry
Oscar
Noah
Gabriel
Freddie

I know at least 2 of all of these

Pops55 · 15/11/2020 16:10

Oh dear a few names we like have been mentioned,
Charlotte, I love but dp not as keen due to Princess Charlotte connection.
Emily, we like but aware it has been popular for a long time.
Alice, we like but in my head I'm singing who the f×@% is Alice.
Anna, we like but possibly a little bland.
We find it very difficult to agree on names, we don't like 'now' names, cutesy names, one syllable names as surname is also one syllable so sounds quite dull, names beginning with G or names associated with a colour again due to surname. We dont like to shortened names either, for example we wouldn't put Charlotte on bc then call her lottie everyday. Haven't spent much time looking at boys names yet as we can't get past girls. We have a few months yet but didn't expect it to be this difficult.

It’s better than nothing lol! Hannah is one of my favourites, most on that list aren’t to my liking either. I know one toddler Emily (the others are older) and one baby Felicity, no Annas, Hannahs or Anyas or Charlottes under 18.

In all honesty, I’d just go with the name you like most. If there are a couple of children with the same name it’s not that bad and it may not happen at all. I think classic names aren’t going to be as super popular as “trendy” or “old lady chic” names anyway.

Libmama · 15/11/2020 17:55

East Midlands here and Sebastian/Seb, Jack, Henry, Harry are all popular for boys. Girls names are Olivia, Florence, Isabel/Isabella, Sophie/Sophia, Milly/Tilly the ‘frillier’ girls names seem to be more popular round here.

MimiDaisy11 · 16/11/2020 09:46

@Pops55

Thankyou. We seem to prefer classic names that are easy to pronounce/spell and won't date badly, so far these names are all in the top 100 so I guess there will be a chance of meeting/going to school with others with the same name, however I do agree its more important to pick a name we love.
If you're worried about popularity there's a big difference in numbers between the top 10 names and those nearer the end of the top 100. I really wouldn't worry about it if your name is above the top 50. It's unlikely there will be a child with that name in your kid's class. And even then I agree with others that if you really love a name go for it.
Sausagedog1 · 16/11/2020 10:02

I disagree when people see popularity doesn't matter and just 'pick a name you like'.
When a name becomes overused it loses it's appeal.
Obviously it's a personal thing but I would always at least try to choose a name that wasn't a current fad. It also depends on the name. Florence for example is popular but it doesn't sound like any other name so I still love it when I hear it. Evie Ava Eva Eve Isla, Ayla, Lyra, Lila Layla Lola etc on the other hand just sound so overused now.
If you like traditional classics I think they will always be lovely. Alexandra is my favourite personally.
Felicity is lovely if you like that.

MikeUniformMike · 16/11/2020 13:16

Same as SausageDog - the names she listed just seem to merge into one.

Pops55 · 16/11/2020 15:39

Yes I know what you mean @Sausagedog1. I too like Alexandra but I think it will be shortened to Alex which I don't like, possibility for middle name though.
Dp not keen on Hannah, prefers Anna. We really like Felicity Alice but realised initials would be FAG.
Whats people thoughts on these..
Alice Felicity
Emily Alice
Emily Alexandra
Anna Emily
Anna Isabel
Felicity Anna
Happy to hear other suggestions also?

OP posts:
NameChange84 · 16/11/2020 16:07

I like Felicity Alexandra

Smellybluecheese · 16/11/2020 16:18

There is a Genevieve in DDs class! She's 5. Known as Gigi.
OP - I know several small girls named Felicity (4 5 and under) - I am in SE England. It's a lovely name but quite popular here.

We are overrun with girls starting and ending in A in DDs class
Amelia
Amaya
Anya
Ariella
Aria
Ayla
Ada (x 3) - and I know 2 others

Popular boys names around here: Toby, Freddie, Oscar, Elijah (I know 5!), Theo, Leo, Luke/Lucas/Luca

Pops55 · 16/11/2020 16:31

@NameChange84 unfortunately the initials would also be FAG...I'm not surenif this is an issue or not?

OP posts:
MikeUniformMike · 16/11/2020 16:48

Alice Felicity - yes
Emily Alice - they don't flow
Emily Alexandra - the ly al again - no
Anna Emily - Anneremily- no
Anna Isabel - Annerisabel
Felicity Anna - better the other way round - no

Alice Felicity or Anna Felicity - I normally would say no to Felicity because it is too long but it goes well with these first names

sashh · 16/11/2020 17:00

What you have to remember is that even the most popular names are given to less than one percent of babies. Statistically, there shouldn't be any repeated names in a class etc. But... Weird stuff happens

So true, I had one class with a Teejay and a TJ in it.

MikeUniformMike · 16/11/2020 17:05

I know a Tjay!

Pops55 · 16/11/2020 17:19

Iv just realised Felicity Anna would again spell FAG, clearly iv lost my marbles. I do like Alice Felicity and Anna Felicity though.

Yes, I’d seen that you’d included Felicity Anna that’s why I suggested Felicity Alexandra!

From a teacher’s POV, most teens and young adults think it’s incredibly uncool to use homophobic slurs. By the time this baby is old enough for it to register, “fag” most likely won’t even be in most tweens or teens language, as it’s already outdated not to mention unacceptable in day to day usage.

User24689 · 16/11/2020 18:07

I'm in the South east (Cambridgeshire) and I know six Sophia's/ Sofia's (mixture) through my children under five. It is so confusing, we have big Sophia, little Sophia, Playgroup Sophia, ballet Sophia, you get the idea. Never seems to come in these lists but we are overrun with them. also there are four Olivia's in DDs class. One Isla in the school. No Amelias. For boys the one I hear the most is Joshua.

Sausagedog1 · 16/11/2020 19:18

I don't think FAG is great. Not just due to the homophobic slur but the cigarette connotation as well.
I personally would focus on getting the first name sorted as that's the one you'll be using all the time. Then once you've decided on that you can choose the middle name.
For example if you really like Felicity there must be a middle name you like that doesn't begin with A.
Felicity Emma
Felicity Isabel
To be honest loads of names go with Felicity.

reefedsail · 16/11/2020 19:49

Felicity Hannah would give you almost the same thing without the problem initials.

jambeforeclottedcream · 16/11/2020 19:58

Sw secondary

I'd say popular names are
Girls Amber, Caitlin, Katelyn, Emily, Grace, Lilly,

The Evie, Avas, Evelyn are starting to trickle through to us

Boys Harry, Oliver, Will, Edward , Robert, Finn/ Finlay/Finley

Also a lot of Celtic / Cornish names

RedToothBrush · 16/11/2020 20:51

Pick something outside the top 1000 names and you will be fine.

If there's only 5 or 6 of that name born the previous year you are unlikely to find you are in the same class.

There are so many names to chose from you dont have to be going leftfield to be in the unusual but not out there camp.

MrsBobDylan · 17/11/2020 08:28

Ds1 has a perennially top 10 name (think it was top 20-30 when I had him, while ds 2 has a perennially rare name - some years it is unranked in the popularity lists. Ds3 has a mid range popular name.

I like them all, popularity does come into it and I'm glad I went for the name I loved each time.
