Well yes there are worse things, but lots of people here are telling you it's not a good choice of name, which means the people he will encounter in life are likely to think the same. You asked for opinions, and mine is that you're being self indulgent and potentially putting barriers in his way.

It's absolutely fine as a nickname but don't make your son write Ziggy on his job applications.

I know a couple of Iggys. Ziggy is better that Iggy in my opinion, but it is very nicknamey. Maybe go with Zack (or any other Z name) but call him Ziggy?

I'm not keen on it. At all.
But I think it's ridiculous to consider that someone looking at a CV will be making judgements in 20+ years time about what the name "means". I really hope people who make comments like that have no role in recruitment; I do and I barely look at someone's name. It's not relevant. We live in a multicultural society and a significant proportion of people applying for jobs in my field and my area have names I've never even heard of before. One was called Phatso. I might think that that's unfortunate but it's also irrelevant.

Sounds like a nn or a Scandinavian name to me.

Ignatius is your best bet really and you can use the nn with impunity.

I’ve known a few Ziggys. All with Eastern European parents and proper names like Sigmund and Siegfried.

@Chilldonaldchill you might not judge, and I might not judge but some people will judge and you can't just cross your fingers and hope the person in the future feels the same way. We can't mould the world to be how we would like it to be, and I would not want to be responsible for my child being embarrassed of their name just because I wanted to be a bit kooky.

In this case it's not a name from
another language, and i wonder if Phatso's parents would have made a different decision about that name had they known the English connotation, and expected their child to be applying for work in the UK.

I think it's great. Much better than these dull top ten names.

Oh and for what it's worth, my unique name came up on here once and someone made a similar "how could anyone use this, poor child blah blah" comment (completely over the top, mind you). In real life, I get nothing but compliments and I love it.

Zygalski is a maths-relevant name if you are really geeky, as in a computer coder, or a WWII history nerd.
The German literary novel "Tschick" is rapidly gaining status. The main character is named Tschikowski. There is already an astonishing amount of discussion about the name.

I kind of love it and I also would kind of be cautious. I mean, you need to have a strong rationale as this is one of those names that is bigger than you might realise.

A friend didn't as every one was at the idea.... 16 years later she has called her dog Ziggy as she still loves the name!

(My ds has what some on here consider a very dull name - I don't regret it. Each to their own!!)

Why would you deliberately make his life harder?

Would you not give some one a job because they don't have a "birth certificate" name? How utterly stupid. They could be the best doctor /bin man/ shop keeper in the world and they wouldn't get a job because their name isn't Sarah or Jake?!! Fuck!

You can't foretell how other children at school will react to it though. Or what the connotations will be in a few years time.

Yes of course there are worse things, but do you really want to increase the chances of the trauma of bullying? Kids can be so cruel and the scars run deep. It might be worth talking to some people with unusual names and see what they think of them. I'm sure some will be fine with it, but I'm also sure lots will hate their name and its impact on their life.

My cat is called Ziggy, ziggy stardust is his full title! I quite like it but everyone will assume they are named after Bowie!

I have a Ziggy.... but it's not the name on his birth certificate.

He's named after a great-grandfather whose name in itself we're not that big fans of but we liked Ziggy and realised he could be called it on a day-to-day basis and keep the 'full' name if he decides he wants to use it later. We've always had really positive reactions to his name.

I always think if you like a diminuitive name like that, you should name the child officially with the full one so they have the option if they decide the other doesn't have enough gravitas when they're older.

NB, no particular problems with his name at school (he is in KS2)

@Chilldonaldchill Phatso or Mphatso is a Chichewa word used in Malawi and Zambia it means gift from God. It's a very popular name and pronounced Pat-so.
