I am expecting lots of no's but we really like it. Have another son called Bodhi.

Bodhi was bad enough. Don't you like children OP?

I really like it, great name! In 20 years from now there will be lots of more unusual names out there in the world, I doubt anyone will be prejudiced against him because he had a name that was considered a bit outre by Mumsnet in 2020.

Chilldonaldchill · 10/11/2020 19:58

@Rover83

I like it as a nickname but not as a proper name

@Chilldonaldchill Phatso or Mphatso is a Chichewa word used in Malawi and Zambia it means gift from God. It's a very popular name and pronounced Pat-so.

Yes I know! He was from one of those countries and a very lovely person. My point was though that, until we met him, the name looked odd and we assumed it was pronounced fatso. But it still didn't affect our calling him to interview and employing him. His qualifications got him the interview not his name.
HotSauceCommittee · 10/11/2020 20:05

I have a friend called Ziggy and she is employed in a serious job, no problem.

HotSauceCommittee · 10/11/2020 20:05

I forgot to say, I really, really like it.

MrPickles73 · 10/11/2020 20:06

It makes me think of Grange Hill...

whitianga · 10/11/2020 20:16

Rhymes with piggy

Elle8999 · 10/11/2020 20:26

It makes me think of Big Little Lies and I think it’s a cool name! I wouldn’t worry too much about CV’s/job interviews - in 20 years time I’m sure Ziggy will be a very normal name and even if it’s not, it will make him stand out!!

Onedropbeat · 10/11/2020 20:56

I like it

I also like sonny

I have a relative called sonny

All the elder relatives bitched about it behind the parents back but they probably do that no matter what the name is

I have standard children’s names but always loved Talulah and wished I pushed harder for it

OwlOne · 10/11/2020 20:58

My teenage son has a friend called Iggy. I love it.

OwlOne · 10/11/2020 20:59

I know iggy isnt ziggy. But it's a slightly more mainstream suggestion.

cautiouscovidity · 10/11/2020 21:01

I knew a Ziggy (nickname for Dziga but only really ever knew him as Ziggy). He was a cool surfer type, very clever too. It suited him, but we lived in West Cornwall which is somewhat ..alternative.

Rainb0wDrops · 10/11/2020 21:13

I like it. I know a middle aged female Ziggy. I don't actually know if that's what's on her birth certificate as I never thought to ask. She has quite a professional job so doesn't seem to have held her back.

abitfunny · 10/11/2020 21:23

Wow really mixed opinions! I generally really like it and I’m aware it’s out there so won’t be liked by everyone. Someone said it’s self indulgent of me which really isn’t the case, we just like the sound of it and even more so that it begins with Z. I also love the meaning behind the name Sigmund but am not keen on that so we would use Ziggy as his full first name. Who knows, maybe I’ll give birth & think he’s not suited to Ziggy at all!

OP posts:
OohKittens · 10/11/2020 21:25

It's my 17yr old's middle name. He is literally named after my cat Blush the only excuse I have is that I was extremely young.

ellsbellls · 10/11/2020 21:26

I know a Ziggy, short for Isaac. I like it Smile!

mathanxiety · 10/11/2020 21:26

I think I'd choose something not quite as far off piste to go with Bodhi.

How about -
Jago
Ivo
Inigo
Rieffe
Sage
Jensen
Leander
Lysander
Declan
Cormac
Cole
Asher
Zaccheus
Justice
Kingston
Merlin

BellaVida · 10/11/2020 21:35

Not a fan of Ziggy, but I think Zane would go really well with Bodhi.

Firebird83 · 10/11/2020 23:38

It’s not my style at all, but it does go well with Bodhi.

MercyBodle · 11/11/2020 05:45

I like it.

CatteStreet · 11/11/2020 05:56

It is self-indulgent, though, OP. You are thinking about what you 'really like' and not of whether the name - the first gift you give your child - will accompany him well throughout his life. No, we don't all have to be called Oliver and Jack (or Olivia and Evelyn), and I deplore any unpleasantness and mocking over names, but a child should have the option to have a 'solid' name - a name that is actually a name. Narcissistic naming seems to have swung from people naming their children after themselves to people naming their children things they 'really love' that are 'unique'. I'm sure the happy medium is better all round - certainly for the child.

Terriblecreature · 11/11/2020 06:09

@CatteStreet

What if the child doesn't like a bog standard name when older?

Like myself I have a very mainstream, popular name from the year I was born and I detest it. Wish my parents were brave enough to give me something cooler in all honesty.

OP I think if u like the name, go for it. People are going to have something to say regardless of what name u pick. Just be confident in ur choice and let the haters be.

CatteStreet · 11/11/2020 06:13

Terriblecreature - then they are free to call themselves Ziggy (or whatever), of course. The point is they have the choice. (And you would have been free to call yourself something else. When younger I knew someone with what was then a very fusty German name who called themselves Candy).

I wouldn't raise an eyebrow at (to take an example above) Isaac known as Ziggy. Ziggy on the birth certificate cuts off that option.

pnutter · 11/11/2020 06:17

My son is Ziggy, he's 27. We still love the name and it suits him. It's from the Hungarian Tsigi, in my case.
