Mallow

Due a baby girl in November and this name keeps on popping up but I'm worried it will be a little too out there? It's a lovely flower and it seems to fit well with the middle name Kimberly. Plus it's the only name I love, the others I have shortlisted I just like.

OP posts:

I think Mallory Rose Kimberly would work well. You could use Mallo as a nn if you wanted.

titchy · 04/10/2020 10:55

Mallory Kim rolls well.

Dinosaursdontgrowontrees · 04/10/2020 10:58

Marley?
For what it’s worth I also pronounce it marshmellow (Londoner)

Iminaglasscaseofemotion · 04/10/2020 11:00

How does that name keep popping up? Confused

midnightstar66 · 04/10/2020 11:21

I thought marshmallow immediately- I've never heard it pronounced with an e?

DragonPie · 04/10/2020 11:30

I don’t like Kimberley it’s so clunky.

midnightstar66 · 04/10/2020 11:30

Is marshmellow another Americanised thing? Basic phonics dictate that it's pronounced mallow wherever you're from in the Uk surely or do people in certain areas sing e, e, ents on my erm for ants on my arm? Genuine question?

I don't think it matters if the first and middle name are a bit of a mouthful as they are rarely said together anyway and often dropped completely when filing in forms etc

PeachesTheFlamingo · 04/10/2020 11:33

Sorry OP, but "marshmallow" immediately springs to mind.

NachoNachoMan · 04/10/2020 11:35

@Horehound

Wtf does this mean "I'm sure the majority pronounces marshmallow with an E"

It's marsh ma low. That's how it's said. Same as mallow.

Unless you're from Yorkshire (like oneself) and its then "marsh-meller" Grin
Garcellesaidwhaaat · 04/10/2020 11:46

It's not the worst name I've ever heard and I would probably get used to it but I wouldn't call a child of my own that name (first or middle) and I would not like to be called it either.
Mallow = marshmallow, sallow, marrow.

Goodness me ... Is it a reflection of our separation from the natural world, that a simple flower name attracts so much opprobrium based on sheer unfamiliarity? I would never associate the name Mallow with the confectionary marshmallow. I just see the plant!

And I still think it's a pretty name.

ImaSababa · 04/10/2020 12:23

Not a fan.

How about Meadow?

But the majority of people won't. They will think of a marshmallow 🤦🤷

That's not any better!

Mallow, Co Cork.

Just no.

Pyewhacket · 04/10/2020 12:41

Will forever be called Marsh.

MadameBlobby · 04/10/2020 13:25

Oh Jesus Mallow is awful. That’s not a name.

MadameBlobby · 04/10/2020 13:26

@SweetBabeofMine

I suppose that's a definite no then! Smile Although I really like Mallory! Never thought of that as an alternative, but would it work with mn Kimberly? Mallory Kimberly is a mouthful and can't change the middle name as it's an honour name.

As for the pronunciation of marshmallow, I suppose it's all down to regional accents? I've only ever had those once or twice (as a child) so I've not said the word often. Thank you for the corrections, though!

It would work fine with the middle name. How often do people get called by their first and middle names anyway?
MadameBlobby · 04/10/2020 13:29

I have also never heard of Marsh-mello why would it be pronounced that way?

mammmamia · 04/10/2020 15:51

Ok I quite like Mallow but agree it is not workable for a name.
I was coming on to say Meadow as well which I LOVE.
Also like Mallory but I don’t like the meaning.

Mangofandangoo · 04/10/2020 15:57

I'm sorry but I think you're asking for trouble when she gets to secondary school. I'm all for different/unique names but this one I think is just unfair

caringcarer · 04/10/2020 16:03

Is Mallow really a name? Kid will be known as marshmallows.

Bipbopbee · 04/10/2020 16:39

How about Marlowe?

daisypond · 04/10/2020 16:49

I think Mallow is OK. It’s a flower.
But I do think if marshmallow the sweet too.
