Due a baby girl in November and this name keeps on popping up but I'm worried it will be a little too out there? It's a lovely flower and it seems to fit well with the middle name Kimberly. Plus it's the only name I love, the others I have shortlisted I just like.

Her baby her rules huh? #BeKind

OP has asked for people's opinions Hmm

It's unfortunate because it's quite pretty but I think the Marshmallow connection is so strong it would be like calling her Mars and expecting people not to add Bar.

@TwigTheWonderKid

Also interested to know if anyone who is disparaging this name would do the same if someone suggested using the flower Lily as a name? After all, it does ryhme with willy, you know...
I take that point - but I think the difference is that some names are longstanding, recognised “names” and some just aren’t. So Lily was an “old lady” name when I was little, but has now become very popular. Something like Petunia has always been around but a bit “out there”. But generally kids aren’t called Daffodil, Foxglove, Sunflower etc. It’s the same with other things: Faith, Hope and Charity....but not Prayer, Virtue or Kindness. There are norms - and it’s worth considering how a child will find living with something that deviates from those.
Time2change2 · 05/10/2020 09:41

If you want your child to be called marshmallow by her peers for many many years, go for it

gingerwhingerwife · 05/10/2020 09:43

No

ProudAuntie76 · 05/10/2020 09:45

Why not Kimberley Mallow?

Like the Irish Biscuits?

It would be the equivalent of calling her Cadbury Choc or Sea Brooke in the U.K.!

WeBuiltThisBuffetOnSausageRoll · 05/10/2020 09:54

As in Flumps ?

No don't call your child Mallow

Why not Posy, Pootle or Perkin?

Actually, Posy is nice.

Don't call your child Pootle or Perkin.

Figgygal · 05/10/2020 09:56

I like Mallory actually
But mallow as you’ve realised is a big noooooo

Also never heard marshmallow pronounced with an e
Ever

AlwaysLatte · 05/10/2020 09:56

The only thing about that is she would get called Mal for short, presumably which means 'bad'.

Greenphonegirl · 05/10/2020 09:57

Mallow like marshmallow?
Thats what my reaction would likely be tbh

That said its not for me

WeBuiltThisBuffetOnSausageRoll · 05/10/2020 09:57

Where exactly does it keep "pooping up"? It's not a good name.

Requires a lot of chewing - gets your saliva flowing and your gut in motion.

AlwaysLatte · 05/10/2020 09:57

Oh good point too others have maid - definitely a marshmallow at school!

AlwaysLatte · 05/10/2020 09:59

Mildew? That's quite nice.

pooopypants · 05/10/2020 10:01

I prefer 'Cove'

Please don't - my first thought was flumps

AlwaysLatte · 05/10/2020 10:01

Aloe ?Same sound, it’s a plant
Except that again you have to think of the playground:
'Aloe mate'

ZoyaTheDestroyer · 05/10/2020 10:06

There are lots of other unusual botanical or flower names. I've always liked Jonquil.

I quite like it, but you might have to deal with people nick naming her in the future.
SacreBleeurgh · 05/10/2020 10:12

What about Malin as an alternative? I LOVE that name...

Marshmallows make your poo float. Genuinely. If you eat enough...an old lady told me this fascinating fact once when a bunch of us kids were eating them so of course, in the name of science, we had to launch an experiment. Eat the whole bag and that poo is going to take several flushes before it goes anywhere. You have been warned.
monkeyonthetable · 05/10/2020 10:20

I'm not keen. I like the flower (and marshmallows Grin) but I have a problem with names where the syllables mean negative things. Mal means bad and low means depressed so I would worry any nicknames would have overtones of meaning bad or depressed.

Sundries · 05/10/2020 10:22

I think there was a rabbit called Mallow in Watership Down, and even as an enthralled child reader, I thought it sounded dopey.

And that's in a novel featuring rabbits called Butterbur, Bigwig, Scabious and Dandelion.

Dillo10 · 05/10/2020 10:28

god forbid the child is even slightly overweight, this would be a living nightmare

Totallyaddictedtoshoes · 05/10/2020 10:30

@Balonder

Kimberley is a type of biscuit you can get in Ireland. They are described as mallow cakes. Chocolate kimberlies are delicious.
I was born in Ireland and my parents were dead set on calling me Kimberley. The advert for these biscuits is the sole reason why that is not my name Grin
Sundries · 05/10/2020 10:57

In fairness, Kimberley were the nicest of Kimberley, Mikado and Coconut Creams, @Totallyaddictedtoshoes. I always felt there was something vaguely disgusting about the jam stripe down the middle of the Mikado.

Squeakerfoot · 05/10/2020 11:59

In National Velvet one of the sisters is called Malvolia with the nickname Mally. Would Mally work as a stand-alone name?

DoTheMaccaroni · 05/10/2020 12:02

@Horehound

Wtf does this mean "I'm sure the majority pronounces marshmallow with an E"

It's marsh ma low. That's how it's said. Same as mallow.

Literally everyone I know pronounces it with an E. I only hear people pronounce the A on American shows.
