Unsettled on his name 11 days old

Can I get oppinions, feeling unsettled on his name. We couldn't agree on a name throughout pregnancy, had a list but nothing feels right so we settled on Oscar. we like it but don't love it. I call him Oz already which I quite like.
My husband loves kane.i love Rex but we don't agree. I like short strong sounding names. Oscar feels long and maybe quite popular.
Has anyone felt like this and learned to love the name as time goes on? Naming another human is hard...

We took a few days naming our 2nd son. As you say not easy deciding something that impacts their whole life.

Would you dare post a photo here and ask for opinions.

If I was having a boy today I'd call him Stanley.

golddustwomen · 17/08/2020 12:52

Like pp above - love Stanley nn Stan.

If I had a another boy today I would call him Isaac or Caleb.

ForeverRedSkinhead · 17/08/2020 12:55

What you're feeling is common. We named our son before he was born , it quickly became apparent that the name was too 'big' for him. We call him the shortened version of his name and it really suits him.

If you like Oz then stick with Oscar.

BernadetteRostankowskiWolowitz · 17/08/2020 12:58

Oscar is lovely!

Kane is truly awful.

sweetnosugar · 17/08/2020 13:02

Like another poster has said, if you like Oz then stick with Oscar! Loads of parents use nicknames for their children, it’s completely fine.
If it’s any help, if I had another boy I’d call him Theo, just love the name. ☺️

Spied · 17/08/2020 13:02

Personally love Oscar. It feels like a short name to me.
I like Cain but not Kane.
Really dislike Rex for a child.

LirBan · 17/08/2020 13:03

I prefer Rex.

Kane is ok. I quite like it.

Oscar is the one that sounds a bit worn out to me.

LirBan · 17/08/2020 13:05

A cross between Rex and Oz could be Ross?

Just a thought. I also like Red. I wouldn't normally be in to colours as names but make an exception for Red as it is short for Redmond or a nn for Edward)

Morfin · 17/08/2020 13:06

Ozzie? Could be Oswald if you want a full name.

celestebellman · 17/08/2020 13:10

Oscar is by far the best of these names - love Oscar, nicknamed Oz, and I don’t think it’s too popular.
Kane is dreadful, sorry, totally different type of name.
Rex is a dog’s name. OK if it’s a nickname I guess but not on birth certificate!
I think it’s quite common to worry your child does not ‘fit’ their name.

Cbeebiesrehab · 17/08/2020 13:12

Oz could also be Austin. Feels a little less popular than Oscar. I like Oscar but it is a lot more popular than your other suggestions.

YummyInMyTummy · 17/08/2020 13:16

Oscar is a nice name, it doesn’t seem long too me. I think Kane is awful and Rex is a dog’s name, sorry.

TheoneandObi · 17/08/2020 13:19

please not Kane! Any of the others, but not Kane

Temple29 · 17/08/2020 13:30

Oscar is nice but if you feel it doesn’t fit then that may not change.

I have a Caleb and it felt right straight away for us. Pregnant with DS2 and he will be Elijah if that suits him. Isaac if not.

Boys names are hard in my experience!

golddustwomen · 17/08/2020 13:40

@Temple29 we have very similar taste! My son is Ellis. I had it picked from day one, Caleb did keep coming into my mind though. Definitely top of the list if we ever have another.

CeibaTree · 17/08/2020 13:44

I like Oz as a nickname for Oscar! If I was having a boy tomorrow, I would call him Otto or Felix :)

Whatsyourflava · 17/08/2020 13:45

@golddustwomen LOVE Ellis

Really like Oscar or Rex but Kane is truly awful.
Like PP suggestion of Austin.

Instead of Oscar how about Otto or Otis? Cole? Casper? Curtis? Tristan?

user1493494961 · 17/08/2020 14:01

Oscar's nice, Kane and Rex are awful.

MikeUniformMike · 17/08/2020 14:02

Of the three names I much prefer Rex.
Oscar is popular but not to my taste.
Kane seems downmarket.

If you are calling him Oz, think about why?

Red is brilliant. Could be short for Redmond or Redford.

Temple29 · 17/08/2020 14:12

@golddustwomen we do have similar taste! Ellis was on our short list too 😂

Sausagedog1 · 17/08/2020 17:50

Oh I know how you feel! I was never 100% convinced on my DS name as we just couldn't agree. It felt like a compromise. I've obsessed over it for months.
For what it's worth it is definitely growing on me. Oscar is a nice name, and I like Oz and Ozzy. Kane is awful, Rex is nice enough.
Don't rush to register him, see how you feel in a couple of weeks. I do think names tend to grow on you once the baby becomes more of a little person.

Disco91 · 17/08/2020 17:54

I liked Oscar but changed my mind to Angus, Oscar is the nicest from your list, Kane reminds me of Emerdale and Rex reminds me of the film Babe!!

DefinitelyMaybeBaby · 17/08/2020 18:24

I think if you're liking using Oz stick with Oscar. It's very common to never feel you found "the one" in a name and settle on something that is acceptable to you both.
I really wobbled on DS2s name which is quite unusual "out there" name we had picked in pregnancy but I wasn't sure once he was here, and I found it worse because it tends to get an eye brow raise/"oh that's unusual" type reaction. I think you're safer to go with something like Oscar which is relatively common and won't raise any questions from others than go with something more out there unless you are 100% on it.
He will be so much more than his name one day, it feels the be all and end all when they are tiny but once his little personality develops a name is just a name. Hope that makes sense!

newmum332 · 17/08/2020 21:15

Personally I think Oscar is a bit overused and sounds a bit boring. There is always an Oscar everywhere I go. Having said that if you’re going to call him Oz it changes things. I imagine an Oz being a completely different child to an Oscar for some reason. (Not that that really matters). I imagine at some point in his life he might revert back to Oscar though.

I think Rex is nice but not Kane.

ILoveFood87 · 17/08/2020 22:13

I like Hugo or Xavier / Zavier
