Can I get oppinions, feeling unsettled on his name. We couldn't agree on a name throughout pregnancy, had a list but nothing feels right so we settled on Oscar. we like it but don't love it. I call him Oz already which I quite like.
My husband loves kane.i love Rex but we don't agree. I like short strong sounding names. Oscar feels long and maybe quite popular.
Has anyone felt like this and learned to love the name as time goes on? Naming another human is hard...

Or Noah

Whatsyourflava · 17/08/2020 22:14

Has this helped @Pod482

resm · 17/08/2020 22:26

Oscar is a beautiful name and easily lends itself to nicknames if you/he prefers. Not a fan of any of the other names on your list, sorry. Congratulations on the birth of your son.

KoalasandRabbit · 17/08/2020 22:26

I would stick with Oscar of those three or maybe Otis nickname Oz. Not keen on Rex or Kane.

howlathebees · 17/08/2020 22:28

Oscar is lovely

DramaAlpaca · 17/08/2020 22:29

Oscar is much nicer than Kane or Rex. Stick with it.

kathyseldon · 17/08/2020 23:44

I would call a boy Leo.
But if you like Oz, then find a name that works being shortened to Oz.

We liked Tilly for a girl, but didn't like Matilda. So we tenuously named her Natalie, and spell Tillie with the ie, to fit in with Natalie. (she still gets Tilly, but it's not an issue).
You can name your child anything, but still call him Oz.

SemperIdem · 17/08/2020 23:51

Oscar is nice. I really like Rex. Kane however is awful.

bbee12 · 18/08/2020 15:09

If you like Oz then what about Ozzie?

Sawyersfishbiscuits · 18/08/2020 15:20

I like Rex and Oscar but if I was having a boy today and wanted a short name I'd probably go with;

Flynn
Earl
Fred
Gus (short for August)
Rex
Felix

Sawyersfishbiscuits · 18/08/2020 15:21

Or you could go with Osian?
Then you still get the Oz

babbaganoush · 18/08/2020 15:26

I had a similar experience with my son. We couldn’t really agree on a name and we ended up naming something that I didn’t absolutely adore and it took me a while to get used to that being his name. He is now 2, I love his name, he really suits it and I can’t imagine him being anything else. They do grow into their names.

And for what it’s worth I absolutely love Oscar.

CatteStreet · 18/08/2020 15:28

Oscar is a whole lot better than Kane or Rex, tbh.

It's reasonably popular atm, but that's good, especially as neither of you feel too attached to it, so he will be able to make it really his own. It travels well, too. As an immigrant (definitely not an 'expat'), I think that's important in a name.

JemimaTiggywinkle · 18/08/2020 15:29

I know a baby who’s name is Ozzie. Not to my taste personally.. but more unusual than Oscar

MikeUniformMike · 18/08/2020 16:01

@Sawyersfishbiscuits, But Osian shorten to Osh.

Sawyersfishbiscuits · 18/08/2020 16:17

@MikeUniformMike
I don't think there's a rule.

I know an Oscar nn Ozzy and that works, even though it's taking the Oss to an Ozz sound.

Osh for Osian sounds a bit odd to me and I'd forever be calling him Osh Kosh B'gosh...

I think nicknames can be stretched to what you like within reason, such as Kitty for Katherine or Millie for Amelia although I never really understood Peggy for Margaret?! Grin

FridaFaye · 18/08/2020 16:18

What about Austin nn Aus/Oz?

AdaColeman · 18/08/2020 16:26

I like Rex best of those that you've mentioned.

Not keen on Oscar and Kane even less so.

Have you considered Reginald with Reggie as a NN?

MikeUniformMike · 18/08/2020 16:33

I know several Osians, more than 10. It is pronounced OSH-an (the an like in can, pan, tan etc)

To shorten it to Oz/Os would be like shortening Joshua to Jos/Joz

Sawyersfishbiscuits · 18/08/2020 16:37

@MikeUniformMike
😆😆😆

I'm delighted for all the Osians and Ossians with the NN Osh.

You seem to be very set on this.

OP I hope you find the perfect name or become happy with Oscar, which is indeed a lovely name too.

anxietrist · 18/08/2020 16:38

I love Ralph my partner liked Cole. 1 syllable doesn't work with our surname though. I like both Oscar and Rex, not Kane though.

Sawyersfishbiscuits · 18/08/2020 16:38

Oh and yes I also did realise the pronunciation @MikeUniformMike but bless you for trying to educate me just in case. 😬

MikeUniformMike · 18/08/2020 16:41

@Thinking about it I know way more than 10 Osians. Glad to hear that each of them is not saying his name properly. The ones I know well I call Osh sometimes, just like I'd call Aled Al.

Tlollj · 18/08/2020 16:42

Don’t like kane at all.
Oscar and Rex I like.

MikeUniformMike · 18/08/2020 16:42

that was @Sawyersfishbiscuits. Don't take it out on me for correcting your silly suggestion.
