Thoughts on Mildred?

Trying to agree a name for DD expected in a few months.

DH thinks old-fashioned names like this are making a comeback. I think over my dead body. He points out that we know an Agatha, Florence, Dulcie, Edith and Pamela. I'm not fond of any of these but I don't think any of them are as bad as Mildred?

AIBU? Or is he?

Reminds me of that scene from The Little Mermaid

I was unfortunately saddled with an old ladies name and everything you say is true. Your name definitely influences how people view you.

Iverunoutofnames · 31/07/2020 00:49

I love Mildred ( but I wouldn’t use it, not brave enough) and my DD has an old lady name mentioned on here. She totally owns that name now though. People either love it or really hate it.

Singalonggong · 31/07/2020 00:52

Mildred makes me thinks of dread. It's really awful. Millicent is lovely. Maeve?

user1477391263 · 31/07/2020 04:35

No name with "dread" in it is ever going to sound good, sorry!

Millicent is fine.

serialreturner · 31/07/2020 04:37

Jesus no.

mathanxiety · 31/07/2020 05:25

Ethelreda, Sadie and Barbara

Hmm He is definitely taking the piss with Ethelreda and Barbara.

Sadie is nice. My guess is this is the name he wants.

OffThePlanet · 31/07/2020 05:26

Elena is lovely, Victoria is nice too but then gets called Vicky.

Patienceisvirtuous · 31/07/2020 05:42

What about Millou, like Simon’s cat 😁

Bezzi · 31/07/2020 06:59

It's growing on me! The more I've read Mildred on here the more I like it.

From all the names you've mentioned I like Sadie & Elena the best.

I know a little Elsie & a Betsy and I think these are cute.

Iris?
Ivy?

Iwant a baby Mildred now

PurpleBirch · 31/07/2020 07:03

It’s of the same vein as Deirdre. Can’t see that making a come back either! Both a bit dreary.

SillyUnMurphy · 31/07/2020 07:04

Apart from Florence (to me it will always be the beautiful city) they are all awful. Mildred possibly being the worst.

PurpleBirch · 31/07/2020 07:04

Victoria is a timeless classic, definitely due a resurgence.

CeibaTree · 31/07/2020 07:07

I actually quite like it, I think it's because I loved The Worst Witch books as a child. But agree with pp, the Mildew similarities would put me off. I know someone who recently called their baby Millicent which is quite old fashioned but also quite a sweet name with the same kind of vibe to Mildred..

Toilenstripes · 31/07/2020 07:12

I would counter his Mildred with a Bertha.

Whatthebloodyell · 31/07/2020 07:22

Mildred is bad. Pamela is terrible!

VenusClapTrap · 31/07/2020 07:25

I like it. I have always loved Ludmila, which feels similar.

PJsEveryday · 31/07/2020 07:30

It's a nope from me too. How about Ivy? Old fashioned but nor in a horrible way.

Enko · 31/07/2020 08:33

He is right old fashion names are back and I met a baby Pamela before lock down.

Sadie is gorgeous so if he liked that old style name why not find the ones you like and counter with them?

Mil was Patricia her sisters Mavis and Kathleen Irene she was always known as Irene. Why not look up your family trees?

Oliversmumsarmy · 31/07/2020 10:25

The fact they are known as old lady names suggests they should be left in the mists of time to the old people who had them.

I can’t think of one name I like

RhianFuckingMorris · 31/07/2020 10:31

Not a fan of Mildred. But older names are popular it's just finding one you like.
Muriel would also be a no from me but Meredith is alot better.

daisypond · 31/07/2020 11:16

Barbara and Frances are great. How about Hilda instead of Mildred?

cushioncovers · 31/07/2020 13:01

I can't say the name Pamela without saying it in the voice of Smithy from Gavin&Stacey GrinPama larrrr!

chubbyhotchoc · 31/07/2020 13:06

Too close to mildew

KingFredsTache · 31/07/2020 13:18

I can't say the name Pamela without saying it in the voice of Smithy from Gavin&Stacey grinPama larrrr!

DH and I (we have a friend called Pam) always have to say Pamela in the style of Borat!
