Thoughts on Mildred?

Trying to agree a name for DD expected in a few months.

DH thinks old-fashioned names like this are making a comeback. I think over my dead body. He points out that we know an Agatha, Florence, Dulcie, Edith and Pamela. I'm not fond of any of these but I don't think any of them are as bad as Mildred?

AIBU? Or is he?

Anything with dred (dread) in a name is very unappealing in my opinion.

safariboot · 30/07/2020 21:14

The Worst Witch. So no.

As for Millicent, Harry Potter put me off that one.

Do you hate your child? Smile

Oliversmumsarmy · 30/07/2020 21:22

There is a trend for old lady named.

The problem is I used to know the old ladies who had these names and they were the last names I would associate with a baby or child.

Awwlookatmybabyspider · 30/07/2020 21:22

Did none of you read the op. It said none of the names Pamela Dulcie or Edith are as bad as Mildred. Therefore I don’t think she’s
planning on using it.

Awwlookatmybabyspider · 30/07/2020 21:25

Other old fashioned/modern pretty and usable names.

Iris.
Mabel
Martha.
Annie
Penelope.
Rose
Elsie
Dorothy.
Alice
Ellen.
Hannah

LarkDescending · 30/07/2020 21:28

The natural inference from the OP is that DH wants Mildred.

Please veto!

Bluepolkadots42 · 30/07/2020 21:37

Mildred Hubble from The Worst Witch book series is what springs to mind for me. The 'dred' on the end makes it sound a very doom and gloom name (which is prob why author of the series chose it- seems gothic and fitting for a witch).

ladykuga · 30/07/2020 21:44

Mildred is up there with Deirdre, Agatha, Maude, Ida, Agnes, Beryl etc. Imagine being saddled with an old lady name in school. That poor kid. Find a nicer name.

villamariavintrapp · 30/07/2020 21:49

I like millicent. But think it's the dread sound in Mildred that's particularly bad

Iwantalonglie · 30/07/2020 22:22

Hmm, thank you... Looks like I might have to divorce him to protect the child if he insists on Mildred.

His other suggestions have been Ethelreda, Sadie and Barbara.

MrsBungle · 30/07/2020 22:24

Mildred is awful. I like Sadie from your list.

AnimalCrossingHere · 30/07/2020 23:00

I'm in my early 30s and my parents lumbered me with 'Irene'. Mildred is in the same league as being an Irene at primary school in the early 90s.

I would never wish a true old lady name on a child, it was hell growing up. I genuinely think it changed my personality for the worse because you can't go into a room feeling confident and open to new people, when the first thing they know about you feels ugly. It's an awful start in life. Don't go there.

Iwantalonglie · 30/07/2020 23:13

@AnimalCrossingHere. So sorry to hear you feel like that about your name...I quite like Irene, but I know what you mean about not fitting the time, I'd quite like to avoid that for my child!

My suggestions (none of which DH is keen on) are Victoria, Elena and Frances.

KingFredsTache · 30/07/2020 23:15

You know a baby Pam?!

Iwantalonglie · 30/07/2020 23:18

@KingFredsTache. Yup! Well, not me personally...DH claims to know one (work colleague's niece's child or something like that, from what he said).

OP posts:
LarkDescending · 30/07/2020 23:21

How about Honor or Sylvie?

Oliversmumsarmy · 30/07/2020 23:23

Sadie and Elena would be my choice from the lists. I don’t mind Victoria or Frances

Ethelreda and Barbara. Spell Divorce.

Are you sure he isn’t joking with you.

HawthornLantern · 30/07/2020 23:24

Make him watch "Mildred Pierce" starring Joan Crawford and see if he is as keen on Mildred after that.

Fruitshootloop · 30/07/2020 23:30

I quite like Mildred. Really really love Ethel. My DH vetoed it but it was my first choice for DD. I can’t understand why people dislike it, it sounds so gentle and pretty.

Topseyt · 31/07/2020 00:15

Stick with your veto of Mildred. It is such an ugly name.

Florence is a nicer and more timeless name, I think.

LivingMyBestLifeNOT · 31/07/2020 00:15

Meredith? I dont like Mildred, sounds too harsh.
Agatha
Agnes
Edith
Delilah

LivingMyBestLifeNOT · 31/07/2020 00:16

Quite like Ethel and love Florence

Missthechips · 31/07/2020 00:25

Mildred Hubble
Mildew
Sorry no it's awful
