So unlucky with names!

Hey all!

First time poster here. Me and hubby are TTC, and easing the stress by disagreeing about names instead!

I tend to give my choice names to people, or use them myself.

My favourite name for a boy was Rowan, met hubby who so happens to be called that. Loved Finn, didn't think kids would ever happen so named our dog Finn.

We've agreed on a girl - Luna Feyre (Fay-Uh) which is based on my love of the moon, and a book series hubby got me obsessed with.

Boy names are much harder... I love Kai but he hates it, so we agreed on Kaiden but now I hate it. I like Levi but he says no because he knew a mean kid at school called Levi.

I have a love of strange ish names, see them below! Feel free to tell me your opinions, or post your own unusual name that you love but couldn't use!

Boys;
Rhysand, Luca, Lorcan, Azriel, Ezekiel, Cassian

Girls;
Feyre, Aelin, Tris, Lysandra, Olenwen, Arya

Most of these are book themed, brownie points to those who can guess the author!

Are your children’s vaccines up to date?

I forgot two more! Kit and Shiro for boys Grin

Waferbiscuit · 06/05/2020 22:50

Kit for a boy Arya for a girl. Everything else feels like it's trying too hard.

Waferbiscuit · 06/05/2020 22:51

Feyre is a headache of a name. Will be misspelled and called Fay or Fairy.

Biancadelrioisback · 06/05/2020 22:52

Well Kit is typically short for Christopher isn't it?
Some of those names will just be a ballache for people to spell or say correctly which leaves your child with a lifetime of correcting people (I speak from experience). Perhaps have a look through some more Shakespearean names?

Tatum1234 · 06/05/2020 22:54

I love Ezekiel - Zeke for short.

DramaAlpaca · 06/05/2020 22:56

Gosh, that's an unusual list.

I like Lorcan and Arya, and Kit if it's a diminutive of Christopher.

The rest are a 'no' from me, sorry.

TeetotalKoala · 06/05/2020 22:57

I know a Lorcan. Never met another. Great name!
Azriel makes me think of the cat in Smurfs. Also, it means Angel of Death (spelled Azreal).
I like Kit. If we'd had another, I'd have liked Christopher with the nn Kit.

Casper - means gold
Ronan (though might be a bit too close to Rowen) - little seal, which is bloody adorable.

I liked Garrett and Kennedy when I was pregnant but DH vetoed. I also liked Mason and Jackson but our surname ends in -son so they didn't work.

Puppybum · 06/05/2020 22:57

My neighbours grandson is Roan I think that's nice

yatapina · 06/05/2020 22:59

I like Luca and Arya but not keen on the others.

I've never seen/heard of Azriel, Feyre and Olenwen before - I wouldn't know how to pronounce any of them and your child would probably spend most of their time correcting/explaining/spelling it to people. I get fed up of this with my own name, it seems like a little thing but after the millionth time it starts to grate!

I'm not really one for unusual names so mine would be pretty tame I guess but I do like Arwyn and Quinn which would be unusual in our area atleast.

SilverOtter · 06/05/2020 23:02

How about Corin for a boy?Smile

Malysh · 06/05/2020 23:03

I actually like Feyre but yeah, people might mispell it. Doesn't mean you can't use it though !

For boys Luca is not so outlandish, personally I love Lukas.

I think Lorcan and Ezekiel are not so unusual in the UK, are they ? (not british).

Not sure about Rhysand but Rhys is common enough.

Cassian... Unusual but why not.

If you like Kai how about Caius ?

As for names I like but can't use...

Josceran (too archaic and doesn't work with my last name)

Markus (too uncommon in my culture)

Asher (same)

Sergey (I'm not russian so it'd be a bit weird. Could use Serge but I don't like it !)

Loup (I feel like I'd get judged for it !)

ChanklyBore · 06/05/2020 23:06

I can guess most of the authors, but I’m not too much of a fan of the names themselves.

I’d have Luca for a girl, though. That’s cool.

If you like literary moon names - Atlas, Europa, Callista, Triton, Oberon, Miranda, Ariel, Umbriel, Cordelia, Ophelia, Bianca, Cressida, Desdemona, Juliet, Portia, Caliban, Prospero, Ferdinand.

MaMaMyCorona · 06/05/2020 23:18

Just came on to say I LOVE the name Azriel (his dark materials)
Some suggestions I love that are not on your list:
Boys- Lysander, Caspian, Tristan, Orion, Aurelius, Artemis
Girls - Cordelia, Cecily, Romily, Darla, Odette, Giselle, Tatania, Thalia, Thora

FizzingWhizzbee123 · 06/05/2020 23:40

Azriel is a cool name but I just can’t imagine naming a child after the angel of death.

I actually like the name Lucifer, which means lightbringer, but wouldn’t use it for obvious reasons!

Mopmum35 · 06/05/2020 23:44

I have an Arya, love the name.
Luca is one of my favourite aswell.

HerRoyalCarbyLess · 06/05/2020 23:47

my favourite name for a boy that ill never be able to use is Meliodas. (Mel ee oh das)
And Aelin is beautiful for a girl.

NicotineRushh · 06/05/2020 23:55

I love Meliodas! I heard it on that Netflix anime... though can't remember the name for the life of me!

OP posts:
HerRoyalCarbyLess · 06/05/2020 23:55

Seven deadly sins WinkGrin

NicotineRushh · 06/05/2020 23:57

That's the one! I also have so many names from anime that I want to useGrin

OP posts:
Namechange8471 · 06/05/2020 23:58

Surely you’d name your son Rowan?
That way you get to use your favourite name and the child’s names after his father?

NicotineRushh · 06/05/2020 23:59

I'm totally sold on Luna Feyre but hubby plays a lot of Final Fantasy and apparently it's very close to a name of a character in that - so he's not totally agreed yet!

OP posts:
NicotineRushh · 07/05/2020 00:00

Oooh heck no. That was a straight, definite no from OH! I would love to, but the second I suggested it he vetoed it immediately

OP posts:
Giganticshark · 07/05/2020 00:06

Feyre will be forever miscalled Freya. Or faye.
Is arya pronounced Ar-ee-ya or Are-ya?
Cassian is pretty good!

NicotineRushh · 07/05/2020 00:08

I pronounce Arya as Ar-ee-ya.
Cassian is probably the one I most wish he would agree with!

OP posts:
Giganticshark · 07/05/2020 00:09

Azriel is brilliant!!!! Never heard it before but it's not weird, it sounds.... Right
