So unlucky with names!

Hey all!

First time poster here. Me and hubby are TTC, and easing the stress by disagreeing about names instead!

I tend to give my choice names to people, or use them myself.

My favourite name for a boy was Rowan, met hubby who so happens to be called that. Loved Finn, didn't think kids would ever happen so named our dog Finn.

We've agreed on a girl - Luna Feyre (Fay-Uh) which is based on my love of the moon, and a book series hubby got me obsessed with.

Boy names are much harder... I love Kai but he hates it, so we agreed on Kaiden but now I hate it. I like Levi but he says no because he knew a mean kid at school called Levi.

I have a love of strange ish names, see them below! Feel free to tell me your opinions, or post your own unusual name that you love but couldn't use!

Boys;
Rhysand, Luca, Lorcan, Azriel, Ezekiel, Cassian

Girls;
Feyre, Aelin, Tris, Lysandra, Olenwen, Arya

Most of these are book themed, brownie points to those who can guess the author!

No help but omg I love those books so much, I'm desperate for next one and to see what happens when cassian and nesta move to the mountains!

If you go for a name that’s a variation on something the other person might have heard then at least the other person has some chance if spelling it correctly. Call your child Ezekiel and they will have to spell it every .... single.....time.

@MinorArcana agree totally. I have a traditional name which can be spelt more than one way, always have to direct the spelling of it. Doesn't bother me in the slightest.

I love Feyre, that looks gorgeous.

Azriel is my favourite boy name on your list, but would like to throw Sirius into the mix, might fit with the name flavour you like?

Ezekiel isn’t necessarily going to have to spell his name out every single time.

Ezekiel is originally a Bible name - an Old Testament prophet - so not some made up for a fantasy book series name.

It really does depend on what you want for your child. So many parents get fixated on the child’s name being the only one in their class. To that end it seems like all sense goes out the window, the crazier the better.

When I was picking my kids names I also shied away from the Uber popular names (as it happens both those names are now in the top 50). But it was also important that the name was one they could carry with them into adulthood. Not too cutesy, not so original no one could spell it, not so bohemian that when it was on their CV the reader might roll their eyes and jump to assumptions. You’re not naming a pet you’re naming a person. They deserve your thinking criteria to go beyond originality.

I’d agree that some people do seem to get too fixated on something like the child’s name being the only one in their class.

My DC all have names that were in the top 40 or higher the year they were born. Aside from at DC1’s first nursery, they’ve still ended up being the only [name] in their year groups at school.
Ironically, one of the 2 pairs of duplicate names in DC2’s Reception class was ranked at around no. 130 for the year those kids were born.

I’m just saying that not all of OP’s suggested names are made up for the sake of originality names.
