So unlucky with names!

Hey all!

First time poster here. Me and hubby are TTC, and easing the stress by disagreeing about names instead!

I tend to give my choice names to people, or use them myself.

My favourite name for a boy was Rowan, met hubby who so happens to be called that. Loved Finn, didn't think kids would ever happen so named our dog Finn.

We've agreed on a girl - Luna Feyre (Fay-Uh) which is based on my love of the moon, and a book series hubby got me obsessed with.

Boy names are much harder... I love Kai but he hates it, so we agreed on Kaiden but now I hate it. I like Levi but he says no because he knew a mean kid at school called Levi.

I have a love of strange ish names, see them below! Feel free to tell me your opinions, or post your own unusual name that you love but couldn't use!

Boys;
Rhysand, Luca, Lorcan, Azriel, Ezekiel, Cassian

Girls;
Feyre, Aelin, Tris, Lysandra, Olenwen, Arya

Most of these are book themed, brownie points to those who can guess the author!

We’ve definitely read some of the same books! Sarah j Maas and george martin. Some of the others are familiar but can’t place them! Cool names :)

Lorcans fabulous. I know a little one, 6 or 7. Suits a child better than I would have expected. Wonderfully cool name for s young man and distinguished for older. Love it.

I pronounce Arya as Ar-ee-ya

Most will pronounce Are-ya due to Game of Thrones, surely?

I would say A-rye-a for Arya.

I like Luna and Luca.

Showing my age but for me Azriel will always be the cat from the smurfs tv series😀😀. Luca is very common here I know several baby Lucas but it is a lovely name. Lorcan is also a fairly common run of the mill name here is Ireland

Despite your list being more unusual they are MUCH nicer that Kai or Kaiden!
Are there any there you think your OH could come around to?

Sarah J Mass reader here too. I always pronounced Fayre as Fay-rah In my head.

Luna is nice but I really don’t like Feyre - much prefer Freya!

I also like Arya.

For boys, I think Kit is fine as a diminutive of Christopher but I don’t love it as a given name. Luca and Lorcan are both nice too.

All of the rest feel too try-hard and a bit cringe to me. I’m a fan of some of the book characters as well, but I don’t think they necessarily translate well into real human names.

I love Lorcan & Cassian 😍.

Luna is lovely but destined to be big it's rising fast.

Ramona was the name we didn't call our second I think it's pretty awesome.

I like Arya, but prefer it spelt Aria. I like Luca for a boy. All the other names on your list sound really pretentious.

@Fisharefriendstoo omg me too! It was only when I showed OH and he pronounced it as "Fay-Uh" that I loved it that way more ;)

@ClaraEccles Yes this is what would most likely happen, I read the GoT books before watching the show, and its always how I said it in my head - so when they said it differently on the show I was not impressed!

I like Cassian and Aelin.

Luca’s quite popular round here though so that one sounds quite ordinary to me - it was just outside the top 50 for boys names in 2018 if that’s something that bothers you.

@NicotineRushh I quite like Cornish names as a source of unusual ones that are also obvious as to pronunciation... I loved Eseld for a good while (Cornish form of Isolde- Isolde is on my list), Elestren and Elowen are pretty and also sound kind of literary or legend-y

Shiro means white or 4th son, so if he's your first child, it would be a bit odd.

@Cornishmumofone I loved Shiro as I read a book loosely based on japanese folklore about a kitsune, and foxes are my favourite animal! Though I agree it would be a strange name for a child ;)

From your list I can tell you are a Sarah J Maas Fan.....

It's very obvious these are book themed. Pretty sure I know the books (i've not read them though) and they are fantasy fiction books. Fantasy being the main word. Most of these are made up names for fantasy characters, they don't transfer well into the real world. Sorry, I just don't like most of them, they just sound made up. I think the only ones you can get away with are:

Arya (very popular at the minute but quite pretty)
Luca (a nice alternative to Lucas)
Ezekiel (very American sounding but ok)

The rest sound silly, sorry!

I have read all the ‘A Court of...’ books too and thought it was Fay-ruh. SJM probably says it in an interview somewhere if you wanted to check? Cassian is lovely and how about Nesta for a girl...? I know she’s a bit mean to start with but she’s a strong character.

Someone mentioned Cornish names above. Some of my favourites are Oula (little owl), Hedra (October) and Sevi (strawberry).

I really like Kit. Don’t saddle him with a name he has to spell out over the phone his entire life. It’s not fair.

That shouldn’t be a deal breaker.
There’s plenty of well established names with variant spellings where people have to confirm spellings over the phone.

Such as Stephen / Steven, Catherine / Katherine / Kathryn, Ann / Anne, Sean / Shaun and so on....

I have to spell out my name all the time and correct spelling/pronunciation - most formal phonecalls/meetings usually start with "sorry can I just check that I'm saying this right".

It was absolutely a deal breaker for me on kids names because it drives me insane!
