Quite often I see people on here describing names as "wet". Sorry if I'm being stupid, but what is that supposed to mean?

Oh dear my son appears to have a pretty 'wet' name - there was me thinking it was quite cool, I expect he'll manage! Smile

teapotstorm · 28/04/2020 23:32

Lucy, poppy, albie, Percy

Wolfgirrl · 28/04/2020 23:38

Tim, Percy, Theo, Felix, Benedict, Louis, Rupert, Wilfred, Robin. In my opinion just not strong or masculine.

I dont really think it 'works' in the same way for girls names but I really dont like those stuffy Worst Witch style names like Mildred, Beatrice, Ottilie, Posy, Gwendoline. So ugly and make me think of dusty old cupboards and wee.

whatausername · 28/04/2020 23:48

@Loveisfreedomthough that was sweet of you to take the time to write that!

whattodo2019 · 28/04/2020 23:57

Boys names
Jamie
Rupert
Cassius
Sasha for a boy
Other names which are more commonly associated with a girl

Girls names
Mary
Beth and Bethany
May

However, a lot of names are through association with someone I consider wet or pathetic!

Orphlids · 29/04/2020 00:01

@ploopsie, ooh yes, good idea. What names would we put at the opposite end of the spectrum?

Thomas, John, Heath, Magnus, Max, Rocco, Marcus, - I think of these as very unwet. Dry?! Grin

I like lots of the ‘wet’ names mentioned here. I agree Tristan is a bit wet, but it’s still on my list. I think being wet doesn’t make something an awful name, if it still has other qualities to offer.

123Dancewithme · 29/04/2020 00:02

My son’s name has been listed a few times Grin

I think these are wet...

Lucy
Tilly
Poppy
Romilly
Ottilie
Felicity
Amelia
Phoebe
Lily
Annabelle

Adrian
Toby
Elliot
Theo
Finley
Louis / Louie
Milo
Rufus

@Loveisfreedomthough 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼

ladycarlotta · 29/04/2020 00:09

Tim really is the wettest name.

ploopsie · 29/04/2020 00:10

@orphlids I would say Marcus is a himbo name or a failed magician with long sideburns 🤣

I think you're right about Tom & John
I would add James, they are pretty blah though & i'm not sure how masculine they are.

ploopsie · 29/04/2020 00:12

saying that Tom reminds me of Tom Hardy & James of 007 so pretty masculine. I can't think of other names.

Colin, Adam, Brian, Kevin, Darren, Mark are these wet?

pinkpinecone · 29/04/2020 00:14

Loveisfreedomthough really sums it up perfectly

Am also intrigued to know what names are considered the opposite of wet

Orphlids · 29/04/2020 00:14

@ploopsie, ha ha! Poor Marcus! I did enjoy your oddly detailed description. Snort!

Wolfgirrl · 29/04/2020 00:18

Marcus reminds me of the kid in About A Boy singing in that high pitched voice.

@ploopsie I dont think those names are wet, just plain or dated really.

123Dancewithme · 29/04/2020 00:19

Colin is definitely wet.

ploopsie · 29/04/2020 00:20

@Wolfgirrl I don't think they are wet either although I would much rather use some of the wet names on here than Darren or Gary.

Ugzbugz · 29/04/2020 00:23

Godfrey and Jeffrey

Wolfgirrl · 29/04/2020 00:23

Yep Colin is. Was the kid in secret garden called colin?

Hmmm. Darren was one of the 'bad boy' names when I was at school (along with Kieran, Ryan and Connor - guess which year?!?!) Its not great but I would rather be a Darren than a Rupert or a Wilfred.

Cindie943811A · 29/04/2020 00:27

Cecil, Cedric, Marmaduke, Archibald, Percival,
Uriah , Derek Marvin, Melvin

Cynthia, Anthea, Agatha, Cecily Myra, Sadie, Mamie

TheBitchOfTheVicar · 29/04/2020 00:34

Colin
Jeremy

Douberry · 29/04/2020 00:50

Wet names definitely not just male - I particularly dislike:
Lily
Poppy
Molly
Joshua
Noah
Casper
Jasper
Toby (not just wet but makes me think of a wet dog)
...basically a lot of very popular names so sorry if I've offended anyoneBlush

NC4Now · 29/04/2020 00:53

Wet = wouldn’t say boo to a goose

Wrongdissection · 29/04/2020 01:07

Flora and Rupert for sure.

Gettingo · 29/04/2020 01:08

This thread was hilarious until some idiot put my son's name up. Angry

Wolfgirrl · 29/04/2020 01:12

@gettingo
