"Wet" names?

Quite often I see people on here describing names as "wet". Sorry if I'm being stupid, but what is that supposed to mean?

Oh yes Molly

whatdoyoudonow · 28/04/2020 21:40

Jamie
Tilly
Tim(my)
Lucy
Poppy

Old fashioned wet names:
Malcolm
Trevor
Suzy
Sally
Penny

whatdoyoudonow · 28/04/2020 21:41

Most names ending in 'y' or 'ie' tbh.

Icandada · 28/04/2020 21:42

Poppy

Cbeebiesrehab · 28/04/2020 21:43

I asked the exact same question when naming my sonGrin apparently he has a wet name too! (Jude)
I still don’t really understand the true definition but I guess it’s names that are feminine or ‘cutesy’
Didn’t put me off Jude.

lalafafa · 28/04/2020 21:43

Maisie

87Callista · 28/04/2020 21:44

When I think of wet names I think of weak, not wet as in wet behind the ears which is a whole different category.

Arlo, Milo, Alfie, Rafferty, Ottilie, Ophelia, Mia, Tia, Miles, Rupert, Jasper, Seth, Luca, Lucy, Ellie, Libby, Maisie, Milly, Tilly, Noah, Toby.

Nearlyalmost50 · 28/04/2020 21:47

These are just lists of slightly outdated middle class names. I don't see anything wet in them, or if they are wet, they will then go on to earn heaps in the City so I wouldn't feel too sorry for any of them.

RoryGilmoree · 28/04/2020 21:48

Robin, Toby, Elliot, Wilfred, Hugo are all nice names but a bit wet to me

missmouse101 · 28/04/2020 21:49

Oh yes, Alice. I forgot that one!

Bubblebu · 28/04/2020 21:54

"And I’ve been out with all of them"

all at the same time??

then no one can criticise you for trying to get them to man up a bit! …!

midsomermurderess · 28/04/2020 21:58

Tom and Emily. Oh, and Ottilie, who sounds as if she would need to be carted about in a sedan chair.

midsomermurderess · 28/04/2020 21:58

Tim not Tom. Tom is not wet.

Apolloanddaphne · 28/04/2020 22:00

Clive.

FawnDrench · 28/04/2020 22:03

Maurice
Larry
Julian
Lindsay
Brian

Sandra
Linda
Barbara
Janet
Trudy

If you can’t imagine him chopping logs on a hillside with his top off, then before ravishing you in the heather, then the name might be a bit wet. by that basis, I'm renaming all my sons wet names. Axes are dangerous.

KindnessCrusader · 28/04/2020 22:06

My Son's name is ALWAYS on these wet threads (I don't care one bit I still love it Grin)

justanotherneighinparadise · 28/04/2020 22:18

Pmsl my kids names have been listed more than once. Poor sods.

I do agree that my second DC has a wet name but his ‘full’ name is less wet than the nickname. So at least he has a choice! Plus he is an aggressive little bugger so if anyone takes the piss when he’s older I have a feeling they’ll only do it once 🤭

Bubblebu · 28/04/2020 22:21

Trudy / Trudie
Rudy
Wendy
Milly
Molly
Mandy
Titty
Flick
Wanda (I've seen emails addressed to Dear Wander)
Babs
Barbie

For a boy:

Colin
Oscar (makes me think of a cuddly toy bear)
Percy
Ambrose
Shelby
Ashley
Freddie (instead of Fred or Frederick)
Clarence (or worse, Clarrie)
Gilbert
Norbert
Crispin
Eugene
Tarquin
Rafe; and
Quentin

(I disagree on Robin - it can be shortened to "Rob" which is fine and it is only because of the Americanisation of "Robyn" for women that it has crossed over in that way - I can never read the name Christopher Robin and think it is prissy - just innocent childhood).

RubaiyatOfAnyone · 28/04/2020 22:23

Basil, obviously, as in Fotherington-Thomas

Julian
Sebastian
Tim

Any male name that would be incongruous on a Phil Mitchell type. Actually this is not necessarily a bad thing!

Always thought Sophie is a wet name as too similar to soppy.

lalafafa · 28/04/2020 22:28

My wet names are associated with wet people I’ve come across through work, and some of the kids friends. Everyone’s will be different.

Moonflower12 · 28/04/2020 22:29

I won't be showing this thread to Ddog! Her name has appeared many times. She like being wet- spaniel- so maybe it suits?

Bubblebu · 28/04/2020 22:31

MsTSwift

Agree with you on the Sophie thing although on occasions it does seem odd to me that any (in particular) girls name ending with an "e" i.e. Diane, Joanne, Sophie, Louise etc are sometimes looked down on compared with any girls equivalent names ending with an a such as - Diana, Joanna, Sophia, Louisa, Isabella, Henrietta etc or any girls names ending with an equivalent "hard" sound like Harriet, Charlotte or Juliet.

But on an equivalent level what do you think of someone in 2020 naming their daughter Violet, Margaret, Margot or Bridget?

WendyDarling888 · 28/04/2020 22:35

Wet names IMO:
Phoebe
Lily
Ellie
Gracie
Alfie
Arthur
Archie
Percy

Some names ending in 'ie' often appear wet. By wet, I mean weak and almost pathetic. The name of a person who lacks a backbone and remains a 'mummy's boy/girl' into adulthood.
