"Wet" names?

Quite often I see people on here describing names as "wet". Sorry if I'm being stupid, but what is that supposed to mean?

Alice is a top wet name also.

Thefaceofboe · 28/04/2020 22:42

Some names ending in 'ie' often appear wet. By wet, I mean weak and almost pathetic. The name of a person who lacks a backbone and remains a 'mummy's boy/girl' into adulthood

So not having a masculine name is a bad thing??

I like almost all these names mentioned, especially Julian and Lucy!

Strange response. The OP asks Sorry if I'm being stupid, but what is that supposed to mean? and I answer.

@30not13 I think the female equivalent is twee. Or frilly.

OVienna · 28/04/2020 22:53

I don't connect emotionally with "wet" as a concept. I know what you mean OP.

Bubblebu · 28/04/2020 22:57

it seems any girls name which is the name of a flower (Lily, Poppy, Daisy and presumably Hyacinth, Rosie, Flora, Fleur, Saffy, Marigold or Jasmine etc) are way too girly therefore unbecoming of an adult woman

MsTSwift · 28/04/2020 22:57

It’s entirely unfair and subjective but to me Sophie is wet but none of the others are. Alice is also wet confirmed by my personal experience of drippy Alices.

The wet family would be Alice Sophie and Tim. Harriet Karen and Tom would totally beat them up.

GatoFofo · 28/04/2020 22:58

Samuel and Alice epitomise wet names for me.

Bubblebu · 28/04/2020 23:01

Justin, as in Justin Bennett in Grange Hill. When I think of 'wet' names this is the sort of person I would have thought of when I was at school.

@WendyDarling888 woah! What Phoebe stole your man? ;)

Basically OP it's a name perceived as either middle class wet (wimpy) or working class wet (dim)

With that said it should go without saying that at its core it's subjective, silly and ridiculous. It's also very simple to believe a person is wet because you perceive their name to be so at this particular moment in time. As trends change "wetness" levels do too 🤣☹

For anyone reading that loves someone with one of these names or are named any names listed here, know if anyone was to actually treat you or consider you as a lesser being because of your name that they are the ultimate wet-behind-the-ears noodle. We all have different experiences of names, backgrounds, lifestyles etc and that is reflected in our name tastes which is pretty groovy baby.

Here's some successful, totally not wet people with apparently "wet names" :
Lucy Liu
Milo Ventimiglia
Ellie Lambeti
Amelia Earhart
Arlo Bates
Rufus Sewell
Nigel Hawthorne

(There are also a lot worse things to be considered than wet).

MrsHuntGeneNotJeremyObviously · 28/04/2020 23:16

Disagree that Jamie and Christopher are wet. I associate Jamie with Jamie Fraser, who is anything but drippy and Chris is definitely going to punch you in the face if you say he's wet Grin
For me Lucy and Nigel are the definitive 'wet' names.

Agree with all the wet names expect Reuben. I knew a very Rugged Reuben once probably has some influence Blush

GorillaManilla · 28/04/2020 23:19

Every Sam/ Samuel I have ever met has been incredibly wet!

ploopsie · 28/04/2020 23:27

There's quite a broad spectrum
on here, what's a definitive non wet name?
