I didn't think this name would be so unpopular

So all throughout my pregnancy, my husband and I kept our baby name choices to ourselves. My baby is now 2 months old, and nearly everyone we have met or spoken to, have mispronounced it. Granted, we haven't seen many people over the last few weeks, so now I'm starting to wonder if it's just my family or if it's really so unheard of?
My baby boy is called Cillian (DH Irish). My whole family pronounce it silly-an even when I've corrected them numerous times.
Can I ask if you would know how to pronounce Cillian? I'm worried I've set him up for a lifetime correcting people.

I thought it is pronounced Silly-an

TwoRedCushions · 21/04/2020 19:08

I’d have mispronounced it too.

Finnemoo · 21/04/2020 19:08

Kill-ee-un. Like Cillian Murphy.

MrsElijahMikaelson1 · 21/04/2020 19:08

Would be kill e an for me

LotusClover · 21/04/2020 19:08

How is it correctly pronounced? SEE-lee-an?

7Worfs · 21/04/2020 19:08

I’ve only ever met one Cillian and had to ask how to pronounce it. It was Kili-an.

Zogsbigsister · 21/04/2020 19:08

I wouldn’t know sorry, and would probably guess at sillyan from the cilla bit. How do you pronounce it?

DDTW1267 · 21/04/2020 19:08

Is it Killian? That's how I'd pronounce it but I wouldn't feel confident

PainintheholeSIL · 21/04/2020 19:08

I think it's a great name! However I am Irish and I know how to pronounce it. It's really not that hard though. Are they just trying to wind you up? It's quite popular here and I really like it. Congratulations!!

Chocolatedeficitdisorder · 21/04/2020 19:09

I guess I would try Silly-Ann first, given that 'Cilla' (from Priscilla) would be pronounced 'Silla'.

It doesn't look like it should have a hard C sound.

Knittedfairies · 21/04/2020 19:09

Cillian Murphy is the reason I know how the name is pronounced.

Mrsmorton · 21/04/2020 19:09

I think it depends where you're from... I'm welsh and I'd always give it a hard C.

Bethanyr2608 · 21/04/2020 19:09

Sorry I read silly-an! However if I was told the correct pronunciation of his name I’d see it differently.

JKScot4 · 21/04/2020 19:09

Kill ee an, just keep correcting them or mispronounce their names.

MilkNoSugars · 21/04/2020 19:09

I wouldn't know how to pronounce it, sorry- kill- ian or sill- ian??

OneTooManyBathtimes · 21/04/2020 19:09

I would have pronounced it Silly-un and then accepted the fact I've pronounced it wrong and get it right after that.

iklboo · 21/04/2020 19:09

Killy-an

Peppafrig · 21/04/2020 19:09

I would pronounce that silly an too.

Justmuddlingalong · 21/04/2020 19:09

I can never remember how to pronounce it. Unfortunately I think a lot of people would struggle with knowing tbh.

JamesNesbittsBrows · 21/04/2020 19:10

Its obviously Kill ee an.
Just ignore the silliness.

7Worfs · 21/04/2020 19:10

Meant to add: it’s a great and memorable name. It’s not an issue that he’ll have to mention correct pronunciation. Lots of people do.

emilybrontescorsett · 21/04/2020 19:10

Killian.
Surely once you have told your family they know what your baby's name is.

cptartapp · 21/04/2020 19:10

Silly - un

LochJessMonster · 21/04/2020 19:11

I would say ‘Silly-An’ but once correctedI would remember.
Same with Niamh etc

Dyrne · 21/04/2020 19:11

To be honest your family are twats if they still insist on pronouncing it wrong even after you’ve corrected them multiple times. Are they making some sort of point?

If you care about someone, you learn how to pronounce their name properly (accents and speech impediments allowing). It doesn’t matter if their name is Jack or Cillian or Kdjduanaba.
