I didn't think this name would be so unpopular

So all throughout my pregnancy, my husband and I kept our baby name choices to ourselves. My baby is now 2 months old, and nearly everyone we have met or spoken to, have mispronounced it. Granted, we haven't seen many people over the last few weeks, so now I'm starting to wonder if it's just my family or if it's really so unheard of?
My baby boy is called Cillian (DH Irish). My whole family pronounce it silly-an even when I've corrected them numerous times.
Can I ask if you would know how to pronounce Cillian? I'm worried I've set him up for a lifetime correcting people.

I know how to pronounce it but I can see why lots of people get it wrong.

SushiGo · 21/04/2020 19:12

I wouldn't worry about it too much if you like the name, everyone will learn quickly how to say it.

Once they are at nursery/pre-school this kind of thing is much easier as other kids don't seem to have the issue with learning their friends names that adults seem to!!

Lovely name, congratulations.

LouLouLoo · 21/04/2020 19:12

Silly-an for me too.

Smurf123 · 21/04/2020 19:12

Kill ee in 🙂 - northern irish here cillian us a popular name. I think it's lovely

Bubblysqueak · 21/04/2020 19:14

I read it as Silly-Ann, how is it supposed to be pronounced?

TheWordmeister · 21/04/2020 19:14

Silly-un

But I have no idea.

MikeUniformMike · 21/04/2020 19:15

Killian, like Lillian or Gillian.
or Kill Ian Grin

Lindy2 · 21/04/2020 19:15

I'd assume, Sill ee an, if I had to take a guess. (Like Cilla)

I'd only have to be told once though that it was a K sound not a soft C to be able to get it right after that. It's not a tricky name once someone has been told the way to say it.

TrickyKid · 21/04/2020 19:15

I would pronounce it the same way as your family do. I've never heard it before so would pronounce how it's spelt.

Cosyjimjamsforautumn · 21/04/2020 19:15

Cillian murphy. Lovely name. Your family are being arses if they continue to mispronounce it after you've corrected them

Megan2018 · 21/04/2020 19:15

I work with a Kill-eee-an so that’s how I’d say it.

Notredamn · 21/04/2020 19:16

It's Killi-an.

Surely it only takes one correction before your family get it right? It's not difficult.

VideographybyLouBloom · 21/04/2020 19:16

I know it’s Kill-ee-an but that’s because my family is Irish and my children have Irish names.
It’s one of my favourite boys names OP. Just keep correcting people; they’ll get it eventually.

Peppafrig · 21/04/2020 19:17

If it was Kill an wouldn't I start with a K.

I think slot of English people would pronounce it Silly an but should know how to say it once corrected. I'm sorry your family keep mis pronouncing it. If they are genuinely finding it difficult can you ask them to imagine the C is a K?

YoureAllABunchOfBastards · 21/04/2020 19:17

It's a lovely name. I think people struggle to make the hard C sound for some reason but surely once you've heard it you remember it

BuffaloCauliflower · 21/04/2020 19:18

I know it’s Killian with a hard C, and it’s a great name, but even if someone doesn’t surely they only need to hear it once to learn? Your family are being ridiculous and I’d be really firm with them that you won’t tolerate them saying it wrong

Preggers86 · 21/04/2020 19:18

I would pronounce it killy-an

HandfulOfFlowers · 21/04/2020 19:18

Do you live in England? Irish names are notoriously difficult for English people to pronounce based on how they are spelled. Cillian is probably easier than some of the others though.

CurtainWitcher · 21/04/2020 19:19

Why choose a name that so many people would get wrong?

He's in for a life of "Silly-Un" unless you move to Ireland.

VettiyaIruken · 21/04/2020 19:19

I would have guessed sillian but once corrected I would pronounce it correctly.

For them to keep mispronouncing it despite having been corrected multiple times can only be deliberate.
You need to ask why they are doing it, given you've told them X amount of times.

And start mispronouncing their names

legalseagull · 21/04/2020 19:20

Kill-e-an. Love it. I wanted to call my DS it. His sister has an Irish name (dad is Irish) but we didn't go for it because of English eyes not being able to read it. I myself read it as Silly-an until I heard the correct way. Only in the same way that I first saw Niamh and now read it correctly instinctively though

Lucylivesinamushroomhouse · 21/04/2020 19:20

Killian.

I know a couple. Lovely name.
