How did you pick your child's middle name?

I'm a little uncertain about how to choose a middle name for our baby due this summer.
I love the name Violet which happens to be the name of one of our grandmothers but I worry (and I'm aware this is likely not going to happen at all but hello pregnancy anxiety Blush ) that family members may be secretly offended if we use a family name from the other side of the family and not their side (call me ridiculous please but my mum can be slightly weird when it comes to stuff like this!!)
We giving our baby 2 middle names but the two we like don't really go together at all - they sound weird in either order.
Alternatively we could just go for a name we like that is not a family name but I think it's quite nice for a middle name to have some meaning to it.
Thoughts? Suggestions? How did you choose a middle name for your children? Is it odd to give 2 middle names?

It’s the same as mine and my godmother’s.

latheritup · 11/02/2020 15:12

Great grandmothers name Smile

namechangenumber2 · 11/02/2020 15:14

My eldest has two middle names - his grandad and his uncles name.

DS2's middle name was chosen by his big brother. The name is the same as the little boy I was nannying at the time!

We were watching a Louis Theroux documentary on medicated kids, there was a little girl called Maeve in America on it.

I decided on the first name my husband chose the second, luckily we both liked Maeve Grin turned out it was an anglicised version of the Irish medb & my husband's mum is half Irish!

nibdedibble · 11/02/2020 15:19

Two middle names each: 1st were on the list and are more "normal" names in case they don't like their first names. 2nd are simply names of nice relations.

bb2605 · 11/02/2020 15:27

@namechangenumber2 ah that's sweet that your DS1 chose the middle name for DS2 :-) I like that idea if/when we have our second.

@somewhereovertherainbow2 wish my husband and I could be that civilised haha he's not mad keen on the first name that I love and I am not keen on the one that is his favourite - neither of us care much about the middle names other than making sure that they sound nice together and we'd like them to have some meaning if possible.

Thoughts on changing the spelling of names to make them look nicer together when written out?! For instance changing Alice to Alys?

Ds1 - has 2 middle names. After mine and his Dads late Grandfathers.

Ds2 - has ds1s late Godfathers name as a middle name.

Ohyesyoudid · 11/02/2020 15:31

Me, dm and dmil all share the same middle name so dd has been given that

PrincessHoneysuckle · 11/02/2020 15:32

Ds has two middle names, both his grandads first names

MrsMoastyToasty · 11/02/2020 15:35

DS middle name is my DF middle name, also BIL and FIL's first name. His 2nd middle name is the male spelling of my DM'S name (it's an old English unisex name).
I don't have a middle name...

Starbonnet123 · 11/02/2020 15:35

I gave my daughter her middle name louise . Louise was a lady my grandma used to sew for , she was a head teacher at a girls school and very sophisticated and fabulous to my 12 year old eyes and i had a huge crush on her . My son was called james as it was my favourite name ever but because of our surname it didn't suit as a first name

feelingchange · 11/02/2020 15:36

My eldest has a middle name that my husband loved but I didn't like enough to be a first name. My youngest has a name that we both loved as a middle name. No relation names at all just names we liked. Neither me or my husband have middle names so we weren't overly bothered.

@PrincessHoneysuckle
@ImNotWhoYouThinkIam
@nibdedibble

Thanks for all the reassurance about the two middle names.

Did you bother much about them sounding good together when spoken out loud or have you not found that as an issue?

DC1 middle name is after DH’s cousin who died young
DC2 middle name is after our midwife who delivered them both at home

I like using middle names for a person

paddingtonbearsmarmalade · 11/02/2020 15:38

My middle name is my great grandmother’s middle name (on my mum’s side) but I have my father’s surname so difficult to complain about having a name from one side!

bb2605 · 11/02/2020 15:41

@paddingtonbearsmarmalade oooh that's a good point. Just a shame the one I love is on DHs side of the family already haha

We decided to go for the first name of our closest friends. So dh's friends name for our 1st boy, my friends name for our 1st girl.

happymummy12345 · 11/02/2020 15:46

Should add we asked them both if they'd mind that and both said no and felt honoured that we'd name our child or children after them

TheGirlFromStoryville · 11/02/2020 15:51

My dd wasn't going to have a middle name, all the way up to the appointment with the Registrar for her birth certificate. She asked if we were sure we didn't want one and I rather randomly thought of my best friend's DM Betty, so picked Elizabeth as dds middle name.

DS was named after both his grandfathers, for his first and middle name.

OfftoPenscome · 11/02/2020 15:54

Our boys have 2 middle names.

Ds 1 - named after both our deceased - so one from each side

Ds 2 - named after an uncle and given the traditional family middle name (4th generation and counting)

OfftoPenscome · 11/02/2020 15:55

Typo - ds 1 named after our 2 deceased grandfathers

golddustwomen · 11/02/2020 15:56

My dd has my moms name.
Ds my brothers.
Oh wasn't overly keen on my brothers name being used but our son will have his dads last name for life so he let me have the middle!

Iminaglasscaseofemotion · 11/02/2020 15:56

Ds1 has my brothers name, ds 2 doesn't have a middle name. We couldn't think of one.

Willow4987 · 11/02/2020 15:56

DS1 has DH grandfathers name who sadly passed away before he was born

DS2 will have 2 middle names which are our fathers
