Eleanor?

What do people think of Eleanor? We're really struggling for girls name ideas. Seem to like quite traditional names, don't really mind if it's too popular.
Only thing is not too keen on nn "Ellie"

Any other suggestions we'd be v grateful! Due first baby in a few days time...

Love it. Especially love the Jane Austen spelling - Elinor.

I have a 17 year old Eleanor. We always call her Ellie but outside the house she is known as both. I wanted to change her name whilst still in hospital with her because I began to realise how popular it is but my husband and other daughter didn't agree so we kept it. I still really like the name but her younger brother has a slightly more unusual name (somewhere between 90-100 on most popular names) and perhaps if I was to choose again I'd go more unusual. However, I do know a lot of Ellie's but none of the other ones I know are really Eleanor strangely enough although initially I assumed they all were.

I love it, depending on your area it might be more common that you realise, and there have been lots of Ellas and Ellies around for a while if you were considering those nicknames.

I love Nell and Norah as nicknames but both of those are family names for us so do mean more too.

Love it. The one I know shortens it to Elle

I’d use Linny or Lenny as a nn.

Thanks so much for all the responses and suggestions ! With the Elinor / eleanor spelling - just to check the pronunciation would still be the same, it's just a different spelling?

Love it. I have an eleanor and she remains an eleanor so far. I’m also not a huge Ellie fan but have accepted it might be an inevitable school nickname. She is eleanor or Nellie at home.

Just seen your post about alternative spellings. Personally I’m not a fan of alternative spellings for any name - you’re just giving you child a name they will constantly have to correct when people assume the most common spelling

Thanks I do prefer the more usual spelling as our surname needs to be spelled out so I woudnt want her to have to spell both!

I've been teaching almost 20 years and only come across 3 Eleanors. Whatever the spelling. I now have my own and yes she does go by Ellie as well as Eleanor. I spent a year when she was around 2 regretting our naming choice as there were so many ellas and ellies etc. But actually, she has rarely met another one. Except at her dance school where for 6 MTHS there were 3! But never since

It's a beautiful name. Medium popular but not excessively. And seems to be timeless.

I love it. It's a lovely name. If I ever had a daughter I would choose the name. Or you know, had to change my own name to go into protective custody or whatever, lol. I'd also prefer the nn Lenny over Ellie.

My Eleanor is still Eleanor rather than Ellie which she doesn't like. We have met very few others. I think it is less popular recently than it was 10 years ago. I love it as much now as when we gave it to her.
