Eleanor?

What do people think of Eleanor? We're really struggling for girls name ideas. Seem to like quite traditional names, don't really mind if it's too popular.
Only thing is not too keen on nn "Ellie"

Any other suggestions we'd be v grateful! Due first baby in a few days time...

One of my faves too, was quite sad when my DD was born and didn’t look like an Eleanor!
Queen Eleanor of Aquitaine - a medieval queen so loved and mourned by her husband King Henry, that he had stone memorials erected along her funeral route, the last of which became the Charing Cross.

DramaAlpaca · 09/01/2020 23:14

Eleanor is lovely. I really like the Elinor version too. I would want to use Nell as a diminutive of either of them, not Ellie, and definitely not Elle.

lorettalemon · 09/01/2020 23:18

It's my DD's name and she's in her 30s, it's very timeless and a name that doesn't sound too old fashioned or too trendy so it would suit anyone!

Bohemienne · 09/01/2020 23:21

I love it, one of those 'perfect' names - timeless, lovely, a choice of nicknames, not too girly. I wanted it for dd1 but dh wasn't keen alas.

Bohemienne · 09/01/2020 23:23

I also love the variant Leonora.

Afrigginggoat · 09/01/2020 23:26

It was Eleanor of Castile and King Edward re the Eleanor crosses but Eleanor of Aquitaine is a kick ass model for any girl.

Sunnytimesahead · 09/01/2020 23:29

Lovely name.

Sunnytimesahead · 09/01/2020 23:29

P.s. I have a friend called Elena which I also really like.

PsychosonicCindy · 09/01/2020 23:32

Love Eleanor I know Rose is a popular middle name but think it goes beautifully with Eleanor. If I had a girl baby tomorrow my names would be either
Sarah Jane
Alice Grace or
Emily Rose

slinkysaluki · 09/01/2020 23:32

Im an Eleanor Smile

RainbowMum11 · 09/01/2020 23:56

Eleanor is a great name, and Ellie doesn't have to be the nn, she could be Nell, or El, or something completely different!!

StrawberryJam200 · 10/01/2020 08:13

Thank you for the correction, afriggingoat!

PlantPotting · 10/01/2020 08:21

I absolutely adore this name!!

If you look at the official statistics, the name “Eleanor”’s numbers have been declining year on year for past 20 years!! It’s just left the top 50 names and because it’s on a downward trajectory by the time your baby arrives there will be even fewer Eleanors each year. It’s a great choice and no where near as popular as it used to be

If you’re looking for alternatives (I don’t think you should), how about Imogen or Edith

Neednewcarpets · 10/01/2020 08:25

My daughter is an Eleanor. She is always an Eleanor at home. Gets called a mix of Eleanor and Ellie at school and it's other adults who know her name but not her personally (like work colleagues) who refer to her as Ellie. Even though I always call her Eleanor. It means 'bright shining one' which I love and yes, Eleanor of Acquitaine was a force of nature. Extraordinary woman.

LittleCandle · 10/01/2020 08:27

Its a great name. There was Eleanor Roosevelt, Eleanor of Aquataine and Eleanor, Countess of Leicester to name just 3 kick ass women. It can be shorted to Ellen, too.

HolaWeenie · 10/01/2020 08:34

Love it, such an elegant name. We had it picked out for our girl, we were told at a later scan that she was actually a boy, so we never got to use it.

nowaypose · 10/01/2020 12:28

It’s my name and I can confirm I have been called Ellie throughout my life whether I’ve liked it or not. Some people have called me Elle which I also hate.

nowaypose · 10/01/2020 12:29

Elinor looks wrong.

mastertomsmum · 10/01/2020 12:30

Always liked it, it suits me wink Wink

Poorolddaddypig · 10/01/2020 15:35

Love it. Nn Nell

lillo95 · 10/01/2020 19:16

I personally wouldn't use 'Ellie' as it's too popular nowadays and we're not keen on 2 syllable names ending in "ie/y" as they always sound a bit too cutesy to me (Abbie, Holly, Darcey, Lucy, Lottie, Polly, Millie, Ellie etc etc & feel similarly about 2 syllable names ending in "ia" Tia, Mia, Gia, Lea, Pia, Ria) but each to their own.

I think Eleanor is a highly beautiful, feminine name that evokes thoughts of both strong legendary women and an English rose. It will stand the test of time. Go for it. She won't be called Ellie if you call her Eleanor.
If you're undecided how about:
Elena
Elizabeth
Rose?

RainbowMum11 · 12/01/2020 23:56

It's an amazing name.

Never was nicknamed Ellie, didn't like it so didn't accept it.

KindKylie · 12/01/2020 23:59

I love Eleanor (and Elinor) but would use Nell as nn and avoid Ellie if at all possible.

goodwinter · 13/01/2020 00:04

My little cousin is called Eleanor - gorgeous name. Nickname is Nor!

Wheresthebiffer2 · 13/01/2020 01:03

Eleanor Rigby (excellent Beatles song).
