Maeve, Margot or Greta?

Fussy husband and I have finally agreed on a shortlist of three names that we BOTH really like - it's a miracle!

Maeve
Margot
Greta

I'm very excited about these three, and expect I'll keep changing my mind on my favourite right up until the birth. I don't think I really mind which we go with. Curious as to which one everyone else on here prefers...

@june2007 it’s pronounced like Mayv

popcorndiva · 29/12/2019 20:37

Greta would used to be associated with Greta Garbo now it's Greta Thunberg and her angry face.

I like Maeve and Margot though Margot seems quite popular at the moment

FourStarsShine · 29/12/2019 20:43

Margot is lovely, it was on our name list for ages!

Maeve and Greta - not keen.

claptomania · 29/12/2019 20:49

I love all three! Which doesn’t help you at all, sorry. But you guys have great taste.

NaToth · 29/12/2019 20:53

Love Margot.

HelenaJustina · 29/12/2019 20:55

Love Maeve, know a gorgeous 19yr old one.

HairyToity · 29/12/2019 20:56

Love Margot and Greta

TheReluctantCountess · 29/12/2019 20:56

I think they’re all bad, sorry!

skatingalley · 29/12/2019 20:58

Love them all, especially Margot.

@HotSince82
Surely the Greta Thunberg association is positive, no?

Realtimes · 29/12/2019 21:00

It’ll be hard not to see Greta as a nod to Greta Thunberg this year- quite a lot for a baby to live up to?! . And yes be aware, Margot is really on trend but fine if that’s ok with you. I like the look of Maeve but out loud it’s a bit tricky to say clearly and quickly? I also like these older names but I reckon keep searching you might find one close to these you also like. I found I change my choice right up to meeting the baby. It really does work to imagine it in different scenarios- yelling the name for a toddler in the park, saying it quickly on the phone to a call centre, announcing it as a newsreader or at a job interview Grin

Dinosaursdontgrowontrees · 29/12/2019 21:01

I absolutely love them all!
If I had to order them it would probably be
Greta
Marvel
Margot

BaggaChips · 29/12/2019 21:06

Why not wait till baby arrives and see which one suits her the best?

TempsPerdu · 29/12/2019 21:07

Just to balance out all the Greta hate a little Smile - yes, it’s very much a marmite name, and not typically pretty, but DD (just turned 2) is a Greta and we’ve had so many positive responses to her name. We love the fact that it works internationally and is simple and strong rather than frilly and girly.

Yes there’s the Greta Thunberg thing, but I can only see that as a positive association - not sure why it would be seen as an issue?

daisypond · 29/12/2019 21:11

I like Margot a lot, and Greta is growing on me more and more. Strong names, not twee and cutesy. Maeve is wishy-washy in comparison.

dreamerlemur · 29/12/2019 21:13

Maeve was a fierce warrior woman in Irish mythology so that sounds good.

daisypond · 29/12/2019 21:16

I didn’t know that about Maeve. Puts a slightly different and better spin on it for me.

dreamerlemur · 29/12/2019 21:18

Yes its my DD s middle name and once I knew about Queen Maeve I was sold!!

17caterpillars1mouse · 29/12/2019 21:27

Love Greta

Maeve is also lovely though I prefer Mavis

Not a fan of Margot

TildaTurnip · 29/12/2019 21:31

Margot is one of my least favourite names ever. It sounds so dreary (female equivalent of Arthur for me). Plus it even looks ugly written-maybe I see it as maggot?

I like Maeve.

lottiedelavega · 29/12/2019 21:42

I like Greta. Wouldn't use it though. It's not a very 'nice' sounding name. And neither are the others.

Margot is a lot more popular now.

SparkyBlue · 29/12/2019 21:53

I love Margot and Greta. Both are beautiful. Not overly keen on Maeve at all. It's quite a common name here in Ireland I know several.

SlayingDragons · 29/12/2019 22:14

I like Maeve and Greta. Don’t mind Margot but wouldn’t be a favourite.

We versus seriously considered Greta 10 years ago before it became “cool”. It was my Granny’s name and I associate it with her far more than anyone else.

Like Margot, it is short for Margaret, and there are so many shortenings for Margaret you could use it as a full name and then choose which to use as a short version once she’s born. (And if she wanted to use something else when she’s older then she’s got a ton of options to choose from).

SlayingDragons · 29/12/2019 22:15

Excuse the rogue “versus” - who knows where that came from!

Nice names, all of them. But Greta will explode in popularity and represent only one thing for 2019-2020 births = Thunberg!
Think I like Maeve best, though it sounds quite Irish and I bet people will ask you that all the time.
