You want to name her after a war torn country? If you like Libby, Liberty is beautiful.

LordProfFekkoThePenguinPhD · 13/11/2019 21:55

Lydia (unless you are in Glasgow)

chipsandgin · 13/11/2019 22:04

en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_ongoing_armed_conflicts

Libya is at war with over 40,000 confirmed fatalities since the war began. Only Syria and Afghanistan are in greater conflict across the entire world. Of all the names you could consider there must be some with less negative connotations? I think the ‘nasty’ comment isn’t entirely justified, I would say the same to any friend who came up with the same suggestion - much harder once it’s actually happened of course but it doesn’t mean people won’t be thinking it!

Insomniacscientist · 13/11/2019 22:09

@LordProfFekkoThePenguinPhD what’s the significance of the name in Glasgow?

I’m not a fan of the name to be honest

BelfastNonBlonde · 13/11/2019 22:10

Don’t.

LordProfFekkoThePenguinPhD · 13/11/2019 22:10

Lydia teapot (‘lid of a teapot’ if pronounced in a Glaswegian accent).

NotStayingIn · 13/11/2019 22:13

I think Libya is a great name. That way you’ll never ever have to explain to people again that you don’t keep up with the news. Wink

Bluerussian · 13/11/2019 22:17

If you want to call your daughter the name of a place, why not India? That's quite nice.

Libya conjours up images of Col Gaddafi.

However I think the op is joking.

Thetimetravelerswife · 13/11/2019 22:22

Also reminds me of Labia!!

What about Miriam? Sister of Moses?

But otherwise I think Elizabeth with Libby has a nickname is nice.

Other names I like with Moses:
Hannah
Sarah
Leah/lea/Lia

Thierryhenryneedisaymore · 13/11/2019 22:35

Are you for real?
FFS i really hope you are joking.

Tillygetsit · 13/11/2019 22:48

I know a baby Libby so that's fine. Libya not so much.

Idolovetobebesidethesea · 13/11/2019 23:00

I would go for Libby as a stand alone name or Liberty as a longer name.
Libya is not a good name.

woodymiller · 13/11/2019 23:16

She's a child not a wobble. God, crying with laughter her, Ive just remembered how much I loved the name Alderney and thought I would give that to my first born - I never, do you think she'd mind if I changed her name?

woodymiller · 13/11/2019 23:18

Womble obviously- autocorrect is an arse who needs educated on burrow-dwelling, recycling creatures

Insomniacscientist · 14/11/2019 01:41

@LordProfFekkoThePenguinPhD cheers

littlemeitslyn · 14/11/2019 13:07

No

CatkinToadflax · 14/11/2019 15:31

it’s a child, not a Womble
I think this is my favourite Mumsnet comment of all time, ever! Grin

I’m an Elizabeth. I don’t particularly like it and I don’t ever use the full version. But when it’s a suggested alternative for Libya I’m suddenly thinking what a sensible, timeless classic it is!
