I used to work with a Shireen. I think her parents were from Pakistan. It’s a nice name, but if you had no Muslim heritage I’d think it a bit of a strange choice.

aibutohavethisusername · 18/10/2019 22:32

I’m not keen on it.

LollyBeebee123 · 18/10/2019 22:35

I had two In my class at school, and I knew a girl a few years younger called it too. This was the 90’s. I’ve never met anyone since called it. I think it’s a little old fashioned, but that’s just my opinion. If you like it, that’s all that matters.

TateWorm · 18/10/2019 22:59

I'm Scottish and known a few here for some reason. Never heard of it being slang for fanny though.

VenusClapTrap · 18/10/2019 23:05

It sounds dated to me because there were a few Shireens around in my youth. As a pp said, it’s in the same camp as Charmaine and Chantelle to me.

Noroof · 18/10/2019 23:10

Shireen Nanjiani - yer fanny. Have heard it on several occasions in different company

PandasMum · 19/10/2019 00:10

Dislike it sorry

AthollPlace · 19/10/2019 00:14

Very 1960s. I don’t mind it, it’s rarely heard on a child nowadays.

Itsrebekahvardysaccount · 19/10/2019 00:14

Oh no. It’s the name I’ve just given to the young woman I saw walking into our local Co-op at 3pm in her pyjamas and dressing down.

HalfManHalfLabrador · 19/10/2019 00:17

Horrible connotations from GOT now sorry

RolytheRhino · 19/10/2019 00:29

I think it sounds like a cross between Shirley and Jolene. Not a fan.

Astronica · 19/10/2019 06:52

I don't like it, sorry.

MrsBertBibby · 19/10/2019 07:44

Go with Shirin.

SE00 · 19/10/2019 07:50

I'm a Shireen, I don't love my name but I don't hate it either. I get called Shazza sometimes which I absolutely hate but I'm mostly Reen which I don't mind and growing up I was known as Reenie and still am by most my family. I'd say if you like it use it, people tend to be a lot nicer about a name once there's a face to it

opinionatedfreak · 19/10/2019 08:06

I've come across a few. All would be my age now - early forties.

I think all were probably from a Pakistani background.

I don't watch game if thrones so don't have that connotation but I am also from Scotland (and have worked in the West of Scotland) and have never picked up on it being used as slang for female genitalia.

I don't love it as a name but it isn't terrible either.

madcatladyforever · 19/10/2019 08:11

I think it depends what nationality you are. I knew a white shireen (Renee for short) in the 60s and she was all dyed platinum hair and mini skirts.
I can see Shireen being lovely if say you have Persian heritage.

Atalune · 19/10/2019 08:14

Don’t like.

mizu · 19/10/2019 08:15

It's also Kurdish. I know two Sherins. I like it.

RoseMartha · 19/10/2019 08:19

No

HoppingPavlova · 19/10/2019 08:20

I’d be expecting lizard skin, betrayed by father and killed.

TrashPanda · 19/10/2019 08:23

I know of a Åžirin in extended family, her dad is Turkish. Don't watch GoT so didn't know about that. It's not to my taste but I think it sounds pretty.

Cecilandsnail · 19/10/2019 11:52

I know a Shireen, Eastern Asian and absolutely BEAUTIFUL. She's really nice too. I'm not sure I'd use the name for a white British child though.

HoratioNightboy · 19/10/2019 12:21

I quite like it. Also in Scotland, and thought it was rhyming slang for a biryani, not a fanny! Choosing a Ruby or a Shireen is not just a baby-naming dilemma...

bookworm14 · 19/10/2019 12:38

I know a Shireen who spells it like that - she’s early 40s and British-Iranian. I think it’s quite pretty, and definitely predates Game of Thrones.
