Thoughts on the name Indie

OceanPearl · 17/10/2019 15:45

We’re expecting our second baby girl later this year and We’re a bit stuck for names.

We were so quick to pick our first daughters name and knew it was right straight away. But I’m really struggling this time!

What are people’s thoughts on Indie as a first name? I absolutely love it but not sure if it’s a name I’d regret in later years?

Thank you Smile

It’s a genre of music.

Bluerussian · 17/10/2019 16:31

I've not heard of 'Indie'; 'India', yes, Miss India Wilkes from 'Gone with the Wind', India Knight of the Sunday Times plus I've known a couple. It's nice but 'Indie' makes me think of a type of film or music.

AnotherQuirkyUsername · 17/10/2019 16:32

I think it's a bit over done these days. It's not a horrible name just a bit "meh".

Redspider1 · 17/10/2019 16:33

As your eldest DD’s name ends in the sound ‘ee’ , why not give your second child a different sounding name, perhaps ending in ‘a’ or ‘o’?
Indie and Marnie sounds like a range of something(like a model of car).

OceanPearl · 17/10/2019 16:34

@Redspider1 a model of car? Haha what ever next!

“ The new Indie, the estate version of the Marnie!” Grin

Benjispruce · 17/10/2019 16:37

Imogen?

Lunafortheloveogod · 17/10/2019 16:39

As long as your last name isn’t Jones who in real life will ever say a thing about it.

Yes it’s more nicknamey than India but there’s thousands of now normal names that were originally just shortened versions of “proper name.

Redspider1 · 17/10/2019 16:41

I dislike made up names. Would always rather give the child the full name so that they have choice when adults. Indie doesn’t sounds very hippie. Alright if you live in a commune but a bit of a silly name for a prime minister.Grin

OceanPearl · 17/10/2019 16:42

I can confirm our last name is definitely not Jones! Haha although I hadn’t even thought about that connection!

I really don’t think Indie is that strange, considering some of the names people are using these days ..

It seems more like a nick name, for a boy or girl, it reminds me of Indiana Jones!

Redspider1 · 17/10/2019 16:43

My teen DD describes her style and music taste as Indie.

Leopardprintboots · 17/10/2019 16:44

I actually think Indie and Marnie sound lovely together @OceanPearl

If not how about

Marnie and Anya
Marnie and Willa
Marnie and Maggie
Marnie and Coral
Marnie and Emmy/Emmie

meow1989 · 17/10/2019 16:45

Emmie is nice

OceanPearl · 17/10/2019 16:48

One of our family has used Emmie already! It is a nice name though

My daughter is Indie 💕

DiploCat1 · 17/10/2019 16:49

Our dd2, who is due soon, is going to be India, but we already call her Indie. Her big sister is Ruby... not sure if that helps or not! But we are the other way round, I was quite happy to have Indie as her actual name but husband wanted India so she had a "proper' name... whatever that is in this day and age!

OceanPearl · 17/10/2019 16:50

@mamaoffourdc oh I do love the name! Have you ever had the sort of response in real life that people have put on this thread?

OP posts:
Wheat2Harvest · 17/10/2019 16:51

Depends to some extent on your surname as it could be said as 'in dee' ('in the').

So you presumably wouldn't want 'In die Field, In die Mann (yikes), In die Butt (double yikes) and so on.

mamaoffourdc · 17/10/2019 16:52

Never! And she is 10! We get lots of compliments about it and she loves it! X

OceanPearl · 17/10/2019 16:52

@DiploCat1 glad I’m not the only person who loves the name!

You’re so right. There is no such thing as a normal name any more! My daughter has girls named rocket, binky and Vegas to name a few at her school. Indie to me sounds like a very ‘normal’ name compared to them!

OP posts:
Redspider1 · 17/10/2019 16:54

But you’re comparing to ridiculous names op! Why ask if you’re happy with your choice?

OceanPearl · 17/10/2019 16:56

@Wheat2Harvest haha! I’ve been waiting for someone to comment something like that!

No our surname isn’t anything like that, or we definitely wouldn’t be considering it as a name

OP posts:
OceanPearl · 17/10/2019 16:59

@Redspider1 think it’s unfair to call any name ridiculous, but thank you for your opinion!

As I said in my op I’m just interested in other people’s perception of the name. We’ve decided to not tell family and friends until she arrives so it’s nice to have some other opinions
