Aaron - v - Arron

This name seems to have become popular lately but, people can't seem to grasp how to pronounce it...
It's AARON as in air-on (biblical).
Fools say ARRON as in A-Ron.
It's simple English!
Can't understand why they do this.
This thread is in response to a member who said that it's pronounced ARRON: were that to be the case, then AARON would be spelt ARRON!

We know how it was pronounced in the Bible because it comes from Torah, written in Hebrew. Aaron was originally Aharon. We know Biblical Hebrew was mostly phonetic.

I can't believe I read this whole thread, I feel like I'm having a bad trip.

I say air-on unless someone requests otherwise, in which case I'd pronounce it however they ask me to.

I don't say air-on because "that's how the biblical name is pronounced" because his name in the bible was אהרן which is literally "_hrn", and when we add the vowels in there, you get "Aharon", with 3 syllables and a definite "ar" rather than "air". That's how my Hebrew professor pronounced it in uni as well, though my Pentateuch professor just called him Aaron (air-on). But yes, even as an air-on person myself, it's still no more correct than arr-on OP. I'm confused about why you'd use the aardvark comparison too when the aar in aardvark isn't pronounced "air"...

Well DS13 is Aaron pronounced Arron as he is named after Aaron Slight (kiwi motorcyclist) and he gets very upset when people tell him he/us are saying it wrong.

It is up to an individual how they pronounce their name so don't dictate to me how to pronounce my DC's namesAngry

Meant to add that I had to have words with my DF after DS was born as he pronounced it Airon. He told me it was the proper pronunciation "as per Moses' brother".

My response "Oh you were around in biblical times then to hear it pronounced this way?". He never said it wrong again.

out of curiosity - how would YOU pronounce "aardvark"?
I pronounce it ard vark. Not Aird vark

I have known people pronounce Aaron both air on and ar on. Surely all you have to do is tell someone how you pronounce your name and they pronounce it the way you like it pronounced.

I'm from the West Midlands and say mom. My nan was born over 100 years ago and she used "mom" so it is not a new thing.
I have a cousin Alun and it is pronounced slightly differently from Alan but it is obvious unless you are listening for it.

It's because Alun is a Welsh name. Welsh is phonetic.
It really is pronounced AL-in.

I'm in the Midlands and say Mum (I'm originally southern) but my children call my Mum Nana pronounced Nann-arrrr. My nephews call her Nana pronounced Na-Na. She gives not a single shit and answers to both 😂

Well it should be Air-ron if spelled Aaron because that's what the second 'a' is for. If you want to be an 'Arun' then you only need one 'A'.

I cannot BEAR vowel wastage.

Aside from that, it is grammatically wrong to pronounce it ARRON - as it follows NO logic in language!

Which would make it fit in very well with all the various pronunciations in English (through, bough, cough, tough for example).

Those are words that have originated in other languages, as is Aaron.
Aardvark is from South African Dutch, bazaar is from Turkish, baa from Ovine ...

The poster I was picking on seemed to suggest that there was some sort of logic or precedent for pronouncing aa as “ai”.
I’d like to see it.

theFreaks - some people pronounce it with a short A, to rhyme with "standard" UK pronunciation of Karen, or baron. (I know there is no standard, and that some areas will pronounce those words differently but!)
So Ka-run and ba-run, and A-run.
The Aussie one I know is a definite A-run. His nickname is Az.

Oh I've only just come back to this, I missed out on being picked on! No, sorry, I wasn't really suggesting that there was any sort of logic, I was just making a stupid comment with absolutely no thought to it at all, for my own peurile gain.

It must be because I'm Scottish and all my short A's sound the same! Karen, aardvark and bazaar have the same A to me. Certainly I'd rhyme Karen, Aaron and Baron.
