A name or a contraceptive pill?

I’m due another daughter at the end of September! I already have an Amber Rose and my favourite name for DD2 is Yasmin. When I told DH he liked it too but worried it was too associated with the birth control pill, which to be honest didn’t really cross my mind. Still thought DH was overthinking so I called my mum supposedly for reassurance but after mming and ahhing she agreed with DH. Then went to my WhatsApp group chat with my 3 close friends on it and 2/3 of them also agreed! Confused

Maybe I’m a bit thick but I would never have thought of the contraceptive pill connotation, I just think it’s a beautiful name. I don’t really care what people think of the name itself (Amber got mixed reactions when she was born) but I do care if the name is going to get her teased and effect her life. My name is Pia and I even had a hard time in school for being pee-er which I don’t want for my child!

I’m not using Jasmine before anyone suggests it -

  1. I just generally prefer Yasmin and don’t want to settle for second best - I’ll regret it!
  2. was the name of a horrible horrible girl at school.

I did do a quick search of Yasmin on MN and all that comes up is chats about the pill, rather than it as a name.😬

So, do you think this name has a too strong association to use? And if so, what other names would you suggest given I like Amber and Yasmin?

oh and please no comments like “it’s a dreadful name anyway” etc. that’s not what I’m asking!

I don't think of the association at all and think it's a lovely and not over used named.

I do prefer the spelling Yasmine as I think it's more feminine, and associate your spelling with being of Middle Eastern descent

MayFayner · 01/08/2019 16:13

I admit that I thought “Yasmin” when I saw your thread title.

anon812 · 01/08/2019 16:14

I definitely thought Yasmin when I saw the title. How about Jasmine?

Matleavemadam · 01/08/2019 17:11

Lol anon812
I knew the name was Yasmin before I opened the thread but having never used that particular pill myself I don't immediately think of it when meeting any Yasmin's...maybe that's the difference?

ejk10 · 01/08/2019 17:27

My daughter is half Turkish and has the Turkish spelling and pronunciation - Yasemin. I always think it sounds lovely and is a bit unusual....

MunsteadWood · 01/08/2019 17:30

I have a good friend called Yasmin and have always thought it's a gorgeous name! I took the Yasmin pill for a while too and guess the association did cross my mind, but it was more "oh, this pill has the same name as my friend" rather than "haha, my friend has the same name as a contraceptive", if that makes sense.

I say go for it if you (and DH) love it. Even if people make the association initially (which I'd be surprised about if they weren't primed with the idea that it could be the same as a contraceptive - seems a bit obscure) she will become her name and own it.

Bundlebuns · 01/08/2019 17:32

My first thought was contraceptive pill. Sorry OP.

Handsmaid · 01/08/2019 17:32

Never would occur to me.
I like both yasmin and Jasmine, probably Jasmine would have the edge for me but both nice names.

MunsteadWood · 01/08/2019 17:32

Actually, I also know a Yasmine (pronounced Yass-meen, rather than Yaz-min) - she's Lebanese. Prefer the Yasmin spelling as it seems less frilly somehow, but both are lovely names.

NameChange84 · 01/08/2019 17:33

I have several Yasmine’s in my family so I think of them rather than the pill. It’s a beautiful name (I prefer the spelling Yasmine to Yasmin though). I love the name Allegra but it’s a medication too!

GrapefruitIsGross · 01/08/2019 17:34

Another person who immediately thought it must be Yasmin. It is a nice name though, but it is the most common brand of Pill, so most women will have heard of it.

Have you thought about Mirena? Grin

elQuintoConyo · 01/08/2019 17:36

It's a contraceptive pill? Never heard of it. Yasmin is a lovely name.

NameChange84 · 01/08/2019 17:37

It’s impossible to get Yasmin in my part of the UK @Grapefruitisgross! Too expensive according to the GP. They shove you on Microgynon and hope for the best. I don’t know anyone locally who has succeeded in getting Yasmin. I managed to get Dianette (nice name too lol).

Pineapplefish · 01/08/2019 17:39

Name!

PlinketyPlinketyPlonk · 01/08/2019 17:42

I love the name Yasmin and I personally wouldn't associate it with the pill.

Maybe just find an alternative spelling?

It was a girls name long before it became a product name.

Sunandrainallconfusedhere · 01/08/2019 17:45

Amber and Jasmine...

PixieLumos · 01/08/2019 17:46

I wouldn’t have made that connection. It’s a nice name.

NeverSayFreelance · 01/08/2019 17:47

I have a friend called Yasmin and I don't think I've ever heard anyone make that connection before.

OneShotFinch · 01/08/2019 17:49

I have heard of the pill, but I never think of it when I hear someone with that name (and I know of a couple)

  • so I say go for it!
bakebakebake · 01/08/2019 17:53

I didn't even know there was a pill called Yasmin.

I know 3 girls called Yasmin and think it's a very nice and pretty name. Aged 11, 26 and 28.

narkedoff · 01/08/2019 17:55

I've never heard of a pill called Yasmin, I used to take ovranette so I guess I could leap to the connection with the name Annette Grin

In summary, it's a fab name and I do prefer it to Jasmine as I know many little Jasmines (pronounced Jasmeen and Jasmyn)

whatausername · 01/08/2019 17:57

@chickenoodlesoup you seem to really love it so if you can get DP on board then use it. I know it is a contraceptive pill but it's not my immediate association with the word. Perhaps because I knew it as a name before I knew it as a BCP.

hannah9176 · 01/08/2019 17:59

It's my name and nobody has ever really made an association with it to the pill. You could connect all names to something obscure if you really wanted to though. I love it, although a lot of people automatically correct it to Jasmine when I tell them my name initially, only negative I can really think of.

heidihigh · 01/08/2019 18:00

I love Yasmin. If it helps, I don't automatically associate it with the contraceptive either, I think it's a really pretty name. If you love it then use it, you will regret it otherwise.

Sorryisntgoodenough · 01/08/2019 18:00

I wouldn’t have thought Pill and I’m sure Yasmin Le Bon and Yasmin Bleeth don’t have anyone saying “what..like the contraceptive?” When they are introduced to people. It’s a nice name.

I thought you were going to say Zeletta Grin
