A name or a contraceptive pill?

I’m due another daughter at the end of September! I already have an Amber Rose and my favourite name for DD2 is Yasmin. When I told DH he liked it too but worried it was too associated with the birth control pill, which to be honest didn’t really cross my mind. Still thought DH was overthinking so I called my mum supposedly for reassurance but after mming and ahhing she agreed with DH. Then went to my WhatsApp group chat with my 3 close friends on it and 2/3 of them also agreed! Confused

Maybe I’m a bit thick but I would never have thought of the contraceptive pill connotation, I just think it’s a beautiful name. I don’t really care what people think of the name itself (Amber got mixed reactions when she was born) but I do care if the name is going to get her teased and effect her life. My name is Pia and I even had a hard time in school for being pee-er which I don’t want for my child!

I’m not using Jasmine before anyone suggests it -

  1. I just generally prefer Yasmin and don’t want to settle for second best - I’ll regret it!
  2. was the name of a horrible horrible girl at school.

I did do a quick search of Yasmin on MN and all that comes up is chats about the pill, rather than it as a name.😬

So, do you think this name has a too strong association to use? And if so, what other names would you suggest given I like Amber and Yasmin?

oh and please no comments like “it’s a dreadful name anyway” etc. that’s not what I’m asking!

I know someone called that but with a different spelling Yasmeen - the meaning of it is Jasmine Flower🤷🏻‍♀️

Nonnymum · 02/08/2019 14:22

It never occurred to me at all. Its a real name. If you both like it go for it. People who know your daughter will start to associate it with her. Brand names change and all names will have some association with someone

wheresmymojo · 02/08/2019 15:41

Yasmin the contraceptive pill has been discontinued now though hasn't it?

In which case the association will die quite quickly...

TrashPanda · 02/08/2019 16:36

I did know from the thread title it would be Yasmin but I wouldn't let it put you off. Women now might know but probably won't be teasing your child. By the time your child and peers are dealing with contraception then Yasmin may well not even exist!

I like Amber and Yasmin but my first thought seeing the two together was, are you a Duran Duran/Simon le Bon fan Blush

Every Jasmine I know shortens it to Jazz which I'm not a huge fan of.

Clownfish123 · 02/08/2019 19:15

It's really not a big deal. Kids won't have heard of it, most adults won't have heard of it. Once she is born people will associate the name with her.
Also it's not a name that lends itself to teasing. Even if she's a teen and other teens hear of the pill, what will they say? 'Oh you have the same name as the pill' conversation over. Not like she's called Fanjo or something.
Go for it, I like the Yasmin spelling.

anon812 · 03/08/2019 00:13

I mean, I definitely though of the contraceptive pill first

But

As some have pointed out, by the time she knows what a contraceptive pill is that one probably won't be popular anymore, or they will have some new weird space age contraceptive and the pill won't exist anymore...

eachtigertires · 03/08/2019 12:10

Never heard of the pill named Yasmin and I think it’s a nice name. You should go for it!

Luxesoap · 03/08/2019 12:37

I love it and the association with the pill wouldn’t put me off in the slightest. I was on HRT called Angeliq which I always thought sounded very nice and French. If you like the name I’d use it. It’s not going to be an issue till she is in her teens by which time their might not even be a drug of the same name in use.

ChikiTIKI · 03/08/2019 12:42

Ive never taken the pill so it would never occur to me.
I assumed most people would think the same as me but maybe I am wrong! I don't know what proportion of people would be familiar with that pill.

It's a nice name :)

Zazia · 03/08/2019 14:10

Never heard of the pill. Like the name.

Angrybottlethrower · 03/08/2019 19:25

I didn’t even know it had contraceptive associations. Would he be adverse to the name Ella as well?
By the way, I love your name!

LowbrowVictoriana · 04/08/2019 11:16

I think it’s a lovely name. I’d never heard of Yasmin contraceptive pills before. I doubt most have.

zvjezdica · 05/08/2019 18:55

I took Yasmin for a while yet when I read the thread title I thought it was gonna be Celeste! I don't associate Yasmin with the pill, a friend recently named her baby Yazmin and it didn't even cross my mind. Lovely name! x

azulmariposa · 05/08/2019 19:05

I have a cousin called Yasmine, and there was a Yasmin that I went to school with, but she was nasty, so it's got negative associations for me.
Tbh I didn't know there was a pill with the same name!

ohsitdownnexttome · 05/08/2019 22:59

I went to school with a Tasmin as an alternative. But Yasmin is fine, I know it's a pill but wouldn't ruin it for me.

Littlepond · 05/08/2019 23:05

Never heard of contraceptive pill called Yasmin. Love the name tho!

TatianaLarina · 06/08/2019 11:27

I don’t associate it with the pill particularly.

LittleDoveLove · 06/08/2019 20:22

I like Yasmin and I know someone who has one too. I don't associate it with the pill even though it was actually the one I was on. Celeste on the other hand I definitely do!

CrackersDontMatter · 06/08/2019 20:27

I know a baby Yasmin. Doesn’t make me think of the pill at all.

zurigirl · 08/08/2019 00:56

I think it's beautiful! :)

HalfManHalfLabrador · 08/08/2019 01:06

I thought Yasmin as soon as I saw the title

SenoraSurf · 08/08/2019 01:08

That's my name and I have never associated it with the pill not have I had anyone mention the pill. To be honest, I think people would only link the name to the pill if they have been on that brand/ no someone that uses that brand.

I actually really love my name :)

Pinkout · 08/08/2019 16:01

I wouldn’t have made the connection at all and think it’s a lovely name.
