A name or a contraceptive pill?

I’m due another daughter at the end of September! I already have an Amber Rose and my favourite name for DD2 is Yasmin. When I told DH he liked it too but worried it was too associated with the birth control pill, which to be honest didn’t really cross my mind. Still thought DH was overthinking so I called my mum supposedly for reassurance but after mming and ahhing she agreed with DH. Then went to my WhatsApp group chat with my 3 close friends on it and 2/3 of them also agreed! Confused

Maybe I’m a bit thick but I would never have thought of the contraceptive pill connotation, I just think it’s a beautiful name. I don’t really care what people think of the name itself (Amber got mixed reactions when she was born) but I do care if the name is going to get her teased and effect her life. My name is Pia and I even had a hard time in school for being pee-er which I don’t want for my child!

I’m not using Jasmine before anyone suggests it -

  1. I just generally prefer Yasmin and don’t want to settle for second best - I’ll regret it!
  2. was the name of a horrible horrible girl at school.

I did do a quick search of Yasmin on MN and all that comes up is chats about the pill, rather than it as a name.😬

So, do you think this name has a too strong association to use? And if so, what other names would you suggest given I like Amber and Yasmin?

oh and please no comments like “it’s a dreadful name anyway” etc. that’s not what I’m asking!

Yasmin Le Bon for me. It’s a nice name. My pill was called Microgynon!

Epanoui · 01/08/2019 18:20

It's one of my middle names. I like it! Never heard of the pill before.

chickenoodlesoup · 01/08/2019 18:25

Thank you all! I think we will probably (not definitely) go for it. Now the issue is do I spell it Yasmin or Yasmine or something else?

@sorryisntgoodenough now, you mention it, Zeletta is a gorgeous name 😍

I'm on yasmin pill so yes I thought of that but loads of people wont have heard of it

Butterflycookie · 01/08/2019 18:30

Yasmina?

SleepingStandingUp · 01/08/2019 18:33

Her peers will, for a long time, not be in the know about the contraceptive pill so she isn't going to get tormented about it at all for most of school. If by 14/15 the girls at school are tormenting her becasue she shares a name with their pill, I think thry have bigger worries. By adulthood, anyone who hears your baby name with your baby actually outside of you and says "oh like the pull?" is a pillock.

In reality people are much more polite once baby is here.

I personally don't like it, but think you should go for it

Ifihadapoundd · 01/08/2019 18:34

I know a Yazmin, and I know she took the Yasmin pill. It doesn't bother her at all. I also love her name.

PrincessScarlett · 01/08/2019 18:37

Never ever heard of a pill called Yasmin and I've taken several over the years.

I think Yasmin is a beautiful name.

MrsAJCrowley · 01/08/2019 18:37

All I can think of here is Le Bon, both for Amber and Yasmin!

Lobsterquadrille2 · 01/08/2019 18:48

One of DD's friends is Yasmin and the only one I know personally. She's 21 and lovely and I think it's a great name. I've vaguely heard of the contraceptive but it wouldn't be the first association in my mind.

chickenoodlesoup · 01/08/2019 20:29

I’d actually never heard of the Le Bons, I won’t lie!

Never heard of Yasmin pill.
I prefer Yasmin to Yasmine. Nice name.

CheckingOutTheQuantocks · 01/08/2019 21:30

I thought you were going to say Dianette! I'm 40 and have never heard of Yasmin being a contraceptive pill - maybe I live in an NHS trust area that doesn't prescribe it. My first thought was Yasmin le Bon, who is possibly one of the most beautiful women ever, imo, so that can't be a bad association. I probably prefer your original spelling over Yasmine, as I tend to see it as Jasmine at first glance.

Rachelover40 · 01/08/2019 21:35

I didn't think of that comparison at all and I don't think most people will. The odd person will but we all learn to deal with minor irritations, there are far bigger ones!

Go for it. Good name.

All the best,

Love,

Tampax x

IsobelRae23 · 01/08/2019 22:31

I’d never heart of that pill, I had microgynon (can’t spell it!). I really like the name, I think it’s really pretty, and a name that will grow with her, unlike names such as Gracie-May, Lucy-Jay, Sophie-Jo, Ellie-May and so on.

INeedAFlerken · 01/08/2019 22:40

I think Yasmin or Yasmine are very pretty names. I wouldn't have made the association to birth control.

miffmufferedmoof · 01/08/2019 22:49

😂 rachelover
That actually made me lol!

username1724 · 01/08/2019 23:37

Yasmin/e is a beautiful name and was on our girls list. I know 2 (who are both mid 20s) and never made any connections, as far as I know they get on just fine

TheVanguardSix · 01/08/2019 23:41

Wouldn't associate it with the pill at all.
Yasmin Le Bon is what I thought.
And my amazing midwife Yasmin from years ago!
It's a beautiful name.

Never heard of that contraceptive pill. Yasmin is lovely.

Doyoureallyneedtoask · 02/08/2019 11:19

I opened this thread thinking you were going to ask about Celeste. I love this name but at the time I was considering it, everywhere I looked online, people said it was too like Cilest the pill. I took it off my list but in hindsight I shouldn’t have. I would not associate Yasmin with the pill and I would spell it like you spell it.

twattymctwatterson · 02/08/2019 11:21

Celeste? Grin

Doyoureallyneedtoask · 02/08/2019 11:22

ETA I wouldn’t necessarily think of TopShop jeans when I hear the name Jamie either even though they share a name. Some people will always make associations but IMO that doesn’t mean it is the only association!

Bentley111 · 02/08/2019 14:17

I'm a Yasmin and no one has ever made a reference to the pill. I love my name. Go for it Smile
