Hart? Or is she on her way out?

DH and I really love the name Miranda for our baby due in October, but I'm worried that it's too much associated with Miranda Hart. What do you think? If it helps, we don't live in the UK so she isn't well known here but our families and friends are UK-based.

Sorry, that's the first thing I think of too.

HMArsey · 28/07/2019 09:34

I think of The Tempest. But I am Very Cultured. Grin

daisypond · 28/07/2019 09:36

Lovely name. I do think Miranda Hart but I also think atheist Tempest. Miranda Hart hasn’t been on telly for years, has she?

daisypond · 28/07/2019 09:37

The Tempest. Not sure where that atheist came from.

Clettercletterthatsbetter · 28/07/2019 09:37

I just think “lovely girls name”. If you asked me to name someone well-known called Miranda, I’d probably say Miranda Hart, or Richardson, but I’d consider both positive associations - strong, successful women.

I think it’s a great name. I’d love to use it but DH isn’t as keen.

Youwantshoesinashoeshop · 28/07/2019 09:38

Lovely name. Lots of nice shortenings, too.

Miri, Merry, etc.

EmmaGellerGreen · 28/07/2019 09:38

I think Tempest. Lovely name

RubberTreePlant · 28/07/2019 09:39

How about Marina?

DrDetriment · 28/07/2019 09:41

I think of the rather unfunny 'comedian' too, which is a shame as it's a pretty name.

TheoriginalLEM · 28/07/2019 09:41

I think of my lovely friend who is the kindest person I know

Medicaltextbook · 28/07/2019 09:43

Now Hart. But once I got to know a Miranda in real life I’d think of then.

IsadoraQuagmire · 28/07/2019 09:44

The film of that name starring Glynis Johns, then the 4 Mirandas I know, then The Tempest.

RubaiyatOfAnyone · 28/07/2019 09:45

I think of our lovely 4yr old dd Miranda, The Tempest, and Miranda Richardson in that order - but if anyone did think of Miranda Hart, so what? I’ve never seen her programmes, but she is a successful (professionally and financially) woman who has created her own career niche. If actually pushed to say something negative about her most people would be hard pushed to come up with more than “i don’t find her attractive” or “i don’t find her funny”. I doubt either of these heinous crimes bother her much Smile

growlingbear · 28/07/2019 09:49

It reminds me a an old friend of mine by that name, who was stunning (Vogue model) and extremely intelligent as well as really good fun and kind. Miranda Hart never crossed my mind.
Tempest next.
Then Miranda Hart now you mention it.
Lovely name.

Other names that are of that type:
Cordelia
Marina
Susannah
Imogen
Georgiana

AudacityOfHope · 28/07/2019 09:50

Terribly unfunny woman.

llangennith · 28/07/2019 09:52

Lovely name. First thing I think of is my friend Miranda from 60 years ago.
If you name your child Miranda people will connect the name with your child and not think of any other Miranda.
We have a Cordelia in our family, actually from 'Buffy' but we used to say from 'King Lear'Grin

bridgetreilly · 28/07/2019 09:53

I think it's fine, honestly. There are famous people with most names, and unless they are famous for being a serial killer or a genocidal maniac, it really doesn't matter. Miranda's a lovely name.

EmmaGrundyForPM · 28/07/2019 09:54

Lovely name

If I associate anything with it then The Tempest.

stupidis · 28/07/2019 09:55

I think of Picnic at Hanging Rock (but I'm Australian) and also of my school friend who is beautiful inside and out. I love the name.

FindaPenny · 28/07/2019 09:56

I stupidly let someone talk me out of using a name I liked because it was associated with someone people generally don't like... Its ridiculous really.... I don't think anyone will see your cute new baby and think of Miranda Hart🤣

It's a lovely name by the way, unusual and interesting.

Aragog · 28/07/2019 09:57

Its not exactly a bad association and once people knew your child they'd just simply see her in her own right.

All you might get initially is people saying 'as in Hart?' And then they'd move on and ask about your baby.

Disfordarkchocolate · 28/07/2019 09:58

An absolutely wonderful name, I know one and she is the most lovely person. People can spell it, it's easy to pronounce and it goes well with lots of names. Go for it (I am biased).

TheFlis12345 · 28/07/2019 09:58

I think Sex and the City.

userabcname · 28/07/2019 10:01

Miraculous Miranda! Possibly the most annoying Shakespeare character of all time (although Romeo is a strong contender) but a nice enough name I suppose.

Secretlifeofme · 28/07/2019 10:01

That's good to hear that many people wouldn't associate it with Miranda Hart! We also associate it with The Tempest Smile

Thanks for the other name suggestions, but we have 4 names already picked out for each sex and we are going to stick with those, and then see what suits the baby when he or she arrives. I was just worried about whether I should leave Miranda on the list of 4, but feel more reassured now!
