We have an agreed boys name & we now finally have a shortlist for girls names (it’s been painful getting to this stage!!).... would love to know what you lot think.

If you hate a name please say why & don’t worry about being rude (unless you don’t know of course!)

Thank you lovelies

Martha
Juliet
Beatrice
Matilda
Rosa
Louisa

Martha is much the best, with Juliet in second place. Matilda would be my least liked of your list it sounds to me like an Edwardian great-aunt and Beatrice, which always puts me in mind of a bossy, bustling type.

IggyAce · 05/06/2019 11:16

Martha: not a fan it’s old fashioned and a bit fuddy duddy to me.

Juliet: really like this, I’ve never met a young Juliet (work in a Primary school).

Beatrice: again I like this and like Bea or Trixie as a nn.

Matilda: most popular on your list. I like it but wouldn’t pick it because it’s popular.

Rosa: Simple and classic again never met a young one.

Louisa: a little dated.

LittleKitty1985 · 05/06/2019 11:23

Martha - hate it. Reminds me of the alcoholic landlady from Spaced
Juliet - don't like it. Too many Romeo and Juliet connotations
Beatrice - hate it, really ugly name
Matilda - like it. V popular atm tho
Rosa - like it!
Louisa - don't like it, too similar to Louise which is v boring and dated

daisypond · 05/06/2019 11:25

Martha - Worthy servant.
Juliet- nice but I don’t like the “little” tag with the “et” ending which is demeaning. Julia is so much better.
Beatrice - classic. Like.
Matilda - grown on me recently but doesn’t grab me. A bit faddy due to the musical.
Rosa- Seems dated. The Rosas I know are in their 20s. Rose is simpler and fresher.
Louisa- like.

BellMcEnd · 05/06/2019 11:30

Love Rosa. Absolutely lovely. Really not keen on Beatrice it seems sort of severe. Never liked it. The others are ok but Rosa is fab

newbieman1978 · 05/06/2019 11:43

Martha is nice, very middle class.

Juliet not a fan of, not sure why, think I've only ever known two. Similar age to me so possibly popular in the 70's?

Beatrice, given it's royal connection would seem to be trying too hard.

Matilda, lovely name, obviously very popular recently which would put me off.

Rosa, not a fan of but very popular in the gypsy community.

Louisa, absolute winner, lovely name. Caution if you'd be opposed to shortening. She'd be Lou to all her teenage friends without doubt.

Starlight39 · 05/06/2019 11:53

Martha - I think it's sweet but DS has 2 in his class which would put me off!
Juliet - love it
Beatrice - not so keen, but not sure why!
Matilda - love it but not keen on nickname Tilly, maybe because i've known a few (very lovely!) dogs by that name so it has a bit of a pet name ring about it for me.
Rosa - love it
Louisa - love it and like the nickname options LuLu or Lou too.

implantsandaDyson · 05/06/2019 11:54

Juliet and Rosa are my firm favourites. Rosa just wins. Both were on my list for my youngest although we went with a different name.

Beatrice, Martha and Matilda are nice but just nice and Louisa I dislike - I think it's the Louise connotation that puts me off. I find Louise dated and I don't like the "sound" of it. Although strangely I dislike the name Rose but that doesn't put me off Rosa.

Awwlookatmybabyspider · 05/06/2019 11:55

Phew.! Before I opened the thread I thought you were wanting to call your baby Whispers. Grin
Rosa is the prettiest.

Hobbesmanc · 05/06/2019 14:00

Beatrice is lovely- but she might get Beattie or Bea- do they work with your name? Matilda again might get shortened- Mattie is cute but Tilly is a little twee. Juliet is pretty. Rosa is pretty but like Maria it sounds southern Mediterranean - I think Rose or maybe Rosalind are prettier

DramaAlpaca · 05/06/2019 14:03

All very nice, with the exception of Martha which says dreary, dowdy housemaid to me. I think Louisa is my favourite.

TatianaLarina · 05/06/2019 14:08

Juliet and Louisa are very 80s and a bit meh. So I’d go with one of the others.

notangelinajolie · 05/06/2019 14:11

Martha
Juliet
Beatrice
Matilda
Rosa
Louisa

They are all lovely names but if I had to pick one -
I would say Louisa is my favourite and Martha is my least favourite.

Ch3rryTree · 05/06/2019 14:28

Not keen on Beatrice or Louisa but really like all the others.

Treaclesweet · 05/06/2019 14:32

Absolutely hate Beatrice- bratty posh girl name IMO. Ambivalent about Louisa, although it does remind me of Louise which is awful. I quite like Juliet but obviously the "where's Romeo" will follow her everywhere. Others are lovely.

Whatareyoutalkingabout · 05/06/2019 15:24

Love them all! Sorry, not much help.

If I HAD to put them in order, it would be:

Rosa
Martha
Beatrice
Matilda
Louisa
Juliet

But that gap between them would be teeny as I love them all so much!

Penny4Thoughts · 05/06/2019 16:33

@Georgie262 Oooh I like Sadie !

Penny4Thoughts · 05/06/2019 16:34

Thanks so much for so many comments I’ve found it really interesting & helpful - I think it’s made me love Juliet, Matilda & Rosa more. Although the suggestions of Julia & Sadie are lovely curveballs.

Matilda - nice
Rosa - nice
Louisa - v nice

KinderSurpriseBump · 05/06/2019 18:29

Martha - reminds me of old ladies
Juliet - nice and pretty
Beatrice - ok
Matilda - love it
Rosa - ok
Louisa - prefer it as a middle name

Pieceofpurplesky · 05/06/2019 18:45

Love Martha and like all the others
I prefer Rosalie to Rosa

Apolloanddaphne · 05/06/2019 18:58

Lovely names all of them.

MikeUniformMike · 05/06/2019 19:08

Martha - ok but I wouldn't choose it. Seems a bit frumpy.
Juliet - pretty but I dislike Jules. Dislike the Julie-ETTE pronunciation that some people use. Jool-yet is how I'd say it.
Beatrice - fine
Matilda - overused. Shame really.
Rosa - fine
Louisa - fine.

Ohyesiam · 05/06/2019 19:10

For an awful moment I thought you wanted to call your baby Whispers.

AmyMaria2 · 05/06/2019 19:12

Martha I don't think this is a very cute / girly name
Juliet very dated
Beatrice not my cup of tea
Matilda would always be Tilly
Rosa I prefer rose
Louisa I like Louise
