My partner and I were coming round to the idea of Maximus but thought a little too strong for our taste.

Anybody have any thoughts on Maxen or Macsen please?

I'm a teacher in London and have a Macsen in my class. I think it's a lovely name and in my 10years teaching he is the only one I've come across.

NancyJoan · 24/04/2019 17:16

I’m in Wales, and know a couple. Max is nicer, imo.

Happyhusband · 24/04/2019 17:21

Jeez you English can be so judgemental of it isn't Kaedyn or Poppi or whatever. Macsen Wledig is how the last major Roman pretender to the Empire is remembered in Welsh legends if I recall correctly.

TaurielTest · 24/04/2019 17:23

Macsen is lovely especially if you have any Welsh connections.
It reminds me of Macsen Wledig (in the Mabinogion): www.bbc.co.uk/wales/history/sites/themes/society/myths_mabinogion_macsen_wledig.shtml

MarvinMarvinson · 24/04/2019 17:29

Love it. Its a great, strong name. And a good way of working out who to avoid if you encounter sneery types who attempt to tell you its a 'made up' or 'wrong' spelling.

It's in the first line of yma o hyd 'Dwyt ti'm cofio Macsen'? cos of the history listed above.

Wandastartup · 24/04/2019 17:30

I know a dog called Macsen I really like it

ReginaPhalange89 · 24/04/2019 17:46

A friend of mine has just had a little Macsen ! Id never heard of it before , but like it. He'll be called Mac mostly.

SemperIdem · 24/04/2019 17:49

So much cultural ignorance on this thread!

It’s a lovely name op, I would definitely spell it the traditional Welsh way though - Macsen.

dreichuplands · 24/04/2019 18:03

I was culturally ignorant about these names OP and very first thought was honestly that they might be made up names.
If you are in Wales this won't be an issue. It might get more annoying elsewhere but if you like them then go for them.

Hitheresunrays · 24/04/2019 18:12

How about Maxwell? Or just Max? I prefer that to Maxen

percheron67 · 24/04/2019 18:13

Max is great. The other two are really odd.

leghairdontcare · 24/04/2019 18:22

Going to have this in my head all night now.

Mascen is a great name if you're Welsh - probably wouldn't do it otherwise.

Maxim makes me think of Rebecca (the novel) but that's probably just me.

TwllBach · 24/04/2019 18:26

I love Macsen but then I’m in Wales...

PlatypusLeague · 24/04/2019 22:29

So much cultural ignorance on this thread!

Or just honest mistakes? No-one knows all the names from everywhere.

MercyBodle · 25/04/2019 08:19

I think it's a great name. I don't live in the UK and I'm familiar with it. I think these are my favourite Max names.

MercyBodle · 25/04/2019 08:20

Just to add, I think the Macsen spelling is better, though I like both. This thread shows you'll get people who'll think it's odd though - as long as you're prepared for that.

We have Macsen on our list for if baby is a boy. A lot nicer than Maximilian or Maxwell but still the same potential nicknames.
We’re Welsh but I don’t think it should stop you using it if you have no welsh connection!

PodgeBod · 25/04/2019 11:04

I've never heard of Macsen and I actually thought it was a creative spelling for Mason. I'm not really keen on it.

MikeUniformMike · 25/04/2019 12:55

I don't think Macsen works outside the Welsh community. I think it will get said as Mackson, and it seems a bit Jaxon-y.

Lottie35 · 25/04/2019 15:51

Getting really annoyed with comments about names not working outside Wales! How ignorant!

Why can't it work outside Wales? Are people that lazy they can't make the effort to learn a name that is not anglicised?!

So lets get rid of all cultural identity for fear of upset some English people.

I now live in England if I have a son I'd love to call him Dafydd..... The amount of critism because it's "not English"
I've never encountered such rubbish!

wertuio · 25/04/2019 16:11

Pretty sure that Maxim was or is the title of a ahem Gentleman’s Magazine.
Maybe call him Razzle or H & E?

MrsTerryPratchett · 25/04/2019 16:14

Pretty judgmental about Kaedyn and Poppi as well actually Grin

MikeUniformMike · 25/04/2019 17:07

Lottie35, read the comments about the name Macsen on this thread. That's why the names don't work.
Call your son Dafydd if you like but don't complain when his name is mispronounced or misspelt. Which it will be.
People can be very rude about names and will actually say things like "I'm not even going to try saying that" (and worse) to your face.
FWIW, Macsen is pronounced Max-en, with the emphasis on the Max.

bridgetreilly · 25/04/2019 18:06

I think if you're not Welsh/in Wales, Macsen does look a bit like you meant McSen or something.

Why not just call the kid Max?
