What do you think of Percy?

@Erksum Surname will be double barrelled with three syllables total.

It definitely sounds like a name that divides people. Still useful to hear opinions even if negative! I don’t see it as a weak name. I’d group it as similar to Arthur, Archie, Freddie etc but less popular?! 🤷‍♀️ I also thought that recent kids film Percy Jackson would be what most kids think of when they hear the name

Reminds me of a drippy Little Lord Fauntleroy. See also: Julian.

Tiramisu1 · 16/04/2019 14:09

Once you meet a real life Percy, all these preconceptions disappear because your association then becomes the person. It's because none of us know a real life Percy that can only think of Percy pig, Percy Jackson etc.

Tiramisu1 · 16/04/2019 14:10

Who is Little Lord Fauntleroy? Confused

SpriggyTheHedgehog · 16/04/2019 14:10

It's one of the least attractive names ever. It's incredibly wet, not to mention the penis association. Eric is much better.

SpriggyTheHedgehog · 16/04/2019 14:11

I knew a real life Percy. It still seemed ridiculous.

Pompello · 16/04/2019 14:17

Ask ten men in your life if they can imagine being called, or would like to be called Percy.

Whoops75 · 16/04/2019 14:38

Percy aged 10 is cute

Percy aged 50 has a limp damp handshake

It’s a risky choice op

Hawkinsfirefly99 · 16/04/2019 14:54

For a boy its ok. Reminds me of percy the park keeper. I knew a girl 'percy james' though and could never wrap my head around a girl having this name! Define boy name in my opinion.

I had a great uncle Percy. He was a commando in ww2, a lovely looking family man and my DFs favourite uncle (he had 6). He had the most beautiful smile I've ever seen. Percy was also the nickname of the plastic penis that got trotted out during sex ed at school.

These two things are quite separate in my mind and have never conflated to cause any trauma. I personally wouldn't use the name, but not for any connotation, it's just not for me. The only younger person I did know called Percy was actually called Matthew. He was a rather stuffy school prefect who got the nickname because he was a proper Percy Weasley! So I wouldn't worry on that score, either. Nicknames often don't follow what would appear to be a logical train of thought.

Love it. There is a Percy at ds's gymnastics class and ds thinks it's the best name ever due to Thomas the Tank Engine.

Spidey66 · 17/04/2019 14:29

Sugden.

I know old names are coming back, but the world ain't ready for Percy.

Well with a surname like that it might go quite well. Especially if he is going to go to one of those posh confident schools. (Not being snidey, just saying...better able to carry off the name).

TreesoftheField · 17/04/2019 15:22

Love it. Doesn't seem wet at all to me. Makes me think of historical Percy family and Arthurian knight.
As for penis - never heard that. Loads of boys are called William and cope.
It was my great grandfather name and my dad's middle, 2 very big farmers and not very wet at all!

SaltedCaramelEverything · 19/04/2019 14:33

I think Percy is such a cute name! DH isn’t keen but I think it’s great and definitely due a come back. It goes nicely with Henry, Arthur etc that are very popular.

The only association I have it Percy from Thomas the tank engine.

I was confused for a minute when I saw everyone saying pig on this thread - but then I clicked. And Percy pigs are the best!!! How nice for a little boy to have the same name as yummy sweets, I’m sure he’d love it.

Go for it OP!!

Bumblebeesmum · 19/04/2019 23:13

I really like it but my husband vetoed it as apparently it makes him think willy ?!
