And horrible

OP posts:
Are your children’s vaccines up to date?
DarlingLittleBabyName · 31/03/2019 15:48

hmm, I am wondering where your coming from on this? if you are talking about baby names, a lot of people are jealous and don't want their favourite names becoming too popular! otherwise, just honesty tbh. depends from where you are looking at it from. x

Topofthehills · 31/03/2019 15:50

Are they? There are definitely a few antagonistic types, but generally I've found people range from extremely blunt to very kind and helpful.

People tend to be more honest than they would be to someone's face, but I guess that's the idea.

adulthumanwolf · 31/03/2019 15:52

Do you know what a troll is?

Tomtontom · 31/03/2019 15:52

What do you deem to be trolling @dave54?

NoTNoShade · 31/03/2019 15:53

I’ve only noticed the twins troll.

ThroughThickAndThin01 · 31/03/2019 15:54

What trolling?

Sybelline · 31/03/2019 16:57

People can certainly be really classist about some names. Did you get harsh feedback on a name, OP?

Saucery · 31/03/2019 17:00

It’s often where trolls build up a posting history. Nice and easy to comment, hang about, say “ Ohhh, I’ve been here aaagges!”

ijustdontunderstandher · 31/03/2019 17:00

People can be quite harsh with some names, all my DS’s names have had some harsh comments but it’d be a boring place if we all liked the same names

DramaAlpaca · 31/03/2019 17:01

Baby names is rife with trolls, it always has been.

ThroughThickAndThin01 · 31/03/2019 17:04

Well unless the op posts again we have no idea what s/he means. Probably a trolling post anyway 😀

BlueMerchant · 31/03/2019 17:04

I think some people ask for opinions and just don't like what others actually think of the names they like and can take it a bit personally.

DramaAlpaca · 31/03/2019 17:06

Are you the poster who's just had a thread on Baby Names hidden by MNHQ?

Twelve8Ts · 31/03/2019 17:08

There are certain people that definitely don’t come on here to help people or suggest names, they basically just crap all over people’s ideas and they enjoy it. Strange people. The reaction you get to names on here is not the reaction you’d get in real life when introducing your baby, so who cares?
Most people on here seem to be helpful.

blueskiesovertheforest · 31/03/2019 17:09

Are you one of those people who think "troll" means "someone who doesn't share my taste or opinions" or do you actually mean the trolls who make up outlandish names or sets of initials to get a rise or fake outrage or catch people out taking them seriously?

ThroughThickAndThin01 · 31/03/2019 17:11

I think ops ask for a name reaction, and if they get a bad reaction they can take it on board and decide if they want to name their child that, and then they can be prepared for negative comments.

I think the trouble comes when an op posts”what do you think of Emily/Kaden/Jack” and members with an Emily/Kaden/Jack are FURIOUS with the replies

IMO mn experience that is

Emily = I’ve always hated that name
Kaden = so downmarket
Jack = booorrrrring,

The problem is with the existing parents of Emily/Kaden/Jack

hayf · 31/03/2019 17:12

I don't understand this either, I can only imagine that by troll you mean someone who disagrees with you. On this board though it would usually be after you'd asked for their opinion. Which doesn't make them a troll.

blueskiesovertheforest · 31/03/2019 17:13

This is one of the only places you'll get honest reactions. Face to face 99.9% of people will tell you Benita Jo Dick or Princess Consuela Banana Hammock is a beautiful name for your new baby, because it's none of their business and they'd rather be polite than save your baby from growing up with a truly hideous name and deal with the resulting social awkwardness of being the one to say something...

Sybelline · 31/03/2019 17:14

'On this board though it would usually be after you'd asked for their opinion. Which doesn't make them a troll.'

You don't have to start a thread to be a troll.

Amongstthetallgrass · 31/03/2019 17:16

dave you do know your on the baby name board.. right??

BlackCatSleeping · 31/03/2019 17:16

People definitely troll on Baby Names. They like to suggest names they know will wind people up just for fun.

blueskiesovertheforest · 31/03/2019 17:21

Sybelline I think Hayf means that of dave54 posts "I want to name my new baby girl Dave, what do you think of when you hear the name?" and people respond "Dave sounds like a 54 year old balding male civil servant in a beige cardigan, please don't call a baby girl that!" Then the response may be harsh but it's giving an opinion on a question dave54 has explicitly asked for an opinion on, therefore unwelcome responses are not by definition troll responses.

Trolls are people pretending to be someone they are not and posting to draw people in and either upset or trick them. They're not people who post things the OP doesn't like, they're not even people who are very blunt and harsh.

Sybelline · 31/03/2019 17:26

Yes I get that but as I say you don't have to start a thread to be a troll. Trolls often appear on threads with a comment designed to deliberately goad or wind up. We've all seen it.

Sybelline · 31/03/2019 17:27

'What do you think of Kyle'?

'Kyle is a chavvy name and he will probably drop out of school and end up in jail' = troll comment to me.

FartnissEverbeans · 31/03/2019 17:38

I wouldn’t say ‘trolls’ but I would say that there is a higher than average number of arseholes on Baby Names.

A lot of the comments are classist or racist/xenophobic (‘Sounds American‘ or ‘I’ve never heard it before within a five mile radius of my shitty town so I hate it’). A lot of them are just shit - ‘Tessa? Sounds like Tesco’ and that sort of inane, unhelpful crap. There are also a few deeply unfunny ‘in jokes’, like that Balonz thing, or the listing of random nouns (‘Colander. Misanthropy. Cushion’) and some posters who clearly think they’re hilarious but sadly just aren’t.

As with any board there are some really lovely people and I think it’s a helpful place generally but it does make me roll my eyes quite regularly too.
