Sybelline I agree that you don't have to be the originator of a thread to be a troll, but surely a troll has to be lying on some level - your example is nasty and bigoted but not a piece of trollery.

blueskiesovertheforest · 31/03/2019 17:58

Just being very harsh and condemnatory is flaming not trolling isn't it?

Trolling is a baiting tactic based on lies or at least insincerity.

SelkieRinnNaMara · 31/03/2019 18:03

I think the trolling has taken a different form in recent years. It's so supercilious and haughty now. It's not fuck you you bitch, it's ''you might benefit from counselling'' and other shit dressed up to avoid falling outside of the code of conduct.
You could say day was night or day was day and there will still be a few people who just get their jollies from arguing with strangers on the internet. You used to be able to run some ideas past a few strangers and get some thoughts, can't do that now. You'll be told to get over yourself, love yourself, get a grip etc.

Saw an example yesterday, woman has worried for maybe 15 years why she bled SO heavily that she needed stiches after sex. Quite a bit of trauma to carry around for 15 years. The minimising was terrible. Some people don't understand that it's not a trivial minor issue just because it's not happening to them.

Smotheroffive · 31/03/2019 18:05

Are you the troll Dave ?

You don't really say anything comprehensible in your OP, and have disappeared

Sybelline · 31/03/2019 18:07

I agree that you don't have to be the originator of a thread to be a troll, but surely a troll has to be lying on some level - your example is nasty and bigoted but not a piece of trollery.

And if someone posts purely to spout classist shite I consider that to be trolling.

Sybelline · 31/03/2019 18:10

Yes, @SelkieRinnNaMara, a troll doesn't necessarily have to be a liar. A troll can just be someone who's deliberately provocative with the intention to cause upset.

MillicentMartha · 31/03/2019 18:11

You can consider anything you like to be trolling, Sybelline but it doesn’t make it so.

Sybelline · 31/03/2019 18:11

Thanks, Millicent.

Smotheroffive · 31/03/2019 18:13

Yeah like posting something nondescript/goady in baby names and buggering off without explanation

BarmyLlama · 31/03/2019 18:16

People seem to cry Troll quite a lot on MN. I think of trolls as people who have come in here and lying with the intention of rousing an argument so you don't have to be the OP.

BlackCatSleeping · 31/03/2019 18:18

Isn't trolling like winding someone up?

I think unfortunately a lot of the arsehole responses on Baby Names are actually serious. Like people genuinely believe that if call your son Kyle, you are condemning him to a life of misery.

Just seems that Baby Names attracts a lot of twats.

I still think a lot of the threads started in baby Names are just wind-ups though. Like what does everyone think of the name Clamydia?

blueskiesovertheforest · 31/03/2019 18:23

Not every piece of bad behaviour on the internet is trolling. It's a specific type of posting and it does involve deceit.

Being goady isn't always trolling. Flaming isn't trolling. Having unpleasant opinions isn' of itself trolling. Trolls wil pretend to have a different opinion or to be unsure and say something wide eyed and stupid or to have a different back story in accordance with the tone of a thread in order to get maximum knee jerk response, so the deceit comes in.

Plopping, like dave54 isn't necessarily trolling...

Smotheroffive · 31/03/2019 18:23

It's a sad reflection of life online now.

Some genuine stories, that because they are out of the understanding or experience to others are viewed suspiciously and accused of trollage.

But my, isn't this a strange thread.

Wtf is OP?

IncrediblySadToo · 31/03/2019 18:26

sybelline words have a meaning so we can communicate. Giving them your own meaning really doesn’t help that process.

Baby Names is THE most spammed section of MN. People post to get a rise & quickly up their post count.

People are sensitive & defensive about names & it’s bound to get heated sometimes 🤷🏻‍♀️

Sybelline · 31/03/2019 18:31

Oh dear. Well I'm afraid one of the hazards of the internet is that you can't control how people interpret other people's posts, and the intentions behind said posts.

ReallyConfused? Sorry, not been here long enough to really dispute that but I would have thought that it was AIBU or something. There surely has to be quite a limited repertoire of trolling in a thread about names?

Smotheroffive · 31/03/2019 18:35

get their post count up

A risky strategy if that's the real motive wouldnt you think? To what benefit, having a high post count?

PCohle · 31/03/2019 18:36

I tend to assume that getting honest opinions about a name is why people are asking an anonymous forum. If you just want people to tell you that the name is lovely hun then why bother asking?

PCohle · 31/03/2019 18:39

Is your post count even visible on MN? Unlike Reddit etc. I don't think this is really a forum that particularly rewards frequent posters. Allowing name-changing etc. seems indicative of that.

KissingInTheRain · 31/03/2019 18:45

Some of the names suggested on here are so laughable and pretentious that the parent(s)’ choices deserve to be mocked. What’s wrong with that?

The ‘anti-Kylie’ type of thread can get a bit cat’s bum mouth, but that’s not what trolling is.

‘Goady’ is a shit excuse for avoiding answering arguments. Accusations of it should banned IMO.

Smotheroffive · 31/03/2019 18:49

Goady is an excellent reason to not get involved.

Nasty people goad, its a weird and nasty way of getting off on winding others up

GreatDuckCookery · 31/03/2019 21:57

Baby name troll - someone who posts asking for advice or opinions on ridiculous names, often yoonique, very often there’s twins thrown in too.

DramaAlpaca · 31/03/2019 22:31

Yes, there's often twins. These days I immediately assume any mention of twins isn't genuine, tbh.

Another one I've noticed is OP saying they are looking for opinions on their list of, say, boys' names but throwing a name usually used for girls into the list. There was a spate of threads like that a while back.

Tiramisu1 · 31/03/2019 22:50

Some of the names suggested on here are so laughable and pretentious that the parent(s)’ choices deserve to be mocked.

Unless they're a joke suggestion (eg Balonz or Willy), I don't think parents' choices should be mocked. We should encourage more, not less, name diversity!

Smotheroffive · 31/03/2019 22:59

So what is OP doing?
