And horrible

OP posts:

Unless they're a joke suggestion (eg Balonz or Willy), I don't think parents' choices should be mocked. We should encourage more, not less, name diversity!

You don’t think ‘A sister for Caractacus’ type threads deserve mockery?

We’ll have to differ on that.

Baby Names is THE most spammed section of MN. People post to get a rise & quickly up their post count

Uh? Baby names isn't that spammy. And mumsnet doesn't even display post counts.

Did you post this on the wrong forum?

MercyBodle · 01/04/2019 02:24

It may not be defined as trolling, but I have noticed that there is much more rudeness, unkindness and foul language on MN baby name discussions compared with similar forums in other parts of the world.

eg on other forums posters generally use phrases such as 'it's not my style' or 'I'm not a fan of' or 'I'm not keen on' about names they don't like, or even 'sorry, I dislike ...' rather than rude put downs. On other forums I think that some of the more extreme rudeness would be deleted by moderators whereas this one seems to allow a lot. Not everyone, and not even the majority, but MN definitely has its own tone - as does each forum round the world - and it's not always a pleasant one. MN is also more class conscious - which reflects the UK I guess - than other places. And as pps have said, there's a lot of ignorance about names that are just a little different to some people's very limited experience.

Thankfully most people are kind and helpful, and open rather than dismissive if they don't know something.

GoFiguire · 01/04/2019 02:36

I like Balonz.

ShpliffenShploffen · 01/04/2019 02:39

The whole Balonz thing is so overdone.

GoFiguire · 01/04/2019 02:41

It was in the Telegraph birth announcements section.

bunchoftulipsanddaffs · 01/04/2019 02:48

Topofthehills

Are they?

Yes they are! They are bitter and twisted because they haven’t done it right and they want to cut the idealistic ones down to size.

Isnore them op. Mumnet posters are an average bunch, hardly any bright sparks and no one here who will change the world. They are all rather boring and jealous actually 😂

GoFiguire · 01/04/2019 03:01

I like cake

SalmonFishing · 01/04/2019 03:14

It all comes down to your definition of 'troll'. Personally I think lots of posters can be totally normal on one thread but slip into 'troll mode' on another. Especially on this section of the website. They see a name they think looks a bit working class and all you can see is a chorus of 'chav'.
It's not constructive feedback either, despite what they may protest, it's just your common or garden British class obsession.

colehawlins · 01/04/2019 03:16

You tell us @dave54

brizzlemint · 01/04/2019 03:22

Emily = I’ve always hated that name Kaden = so downmarket
Jack = booorrrrring,

Oi! Who are you to criticise the names of my DTriplets Grin Have a Biscuit

Decormad38 · 01/04/2019 03:33

I’m not sure how you troll on a baby name thread. When you ask for peoples views of names you are going to get some people who like a name and dome that dislike a name and then a reason why. They are rarely being rude to you. That’s their view of ‘the name’. Trolling is a different thing altogether.

Decormad38 · 01/04/2019 03:38

Anyway the op has basically trolled as they have now vanished. Oh the irony!

Cookit · 01/04/2019 07:13

I love how blunt people are on Baby Names.

If you ask for opinions why get upset with the answer? It can’t all be people telling you what you want to hear.

If you have a name and don’t want to hear negative opinions, don’t ask. If you want to know what people will actually think of the name but never say to your face, ask.

ArgyMargy · 01/04/2019 07:46

We should encourage more, not less, name diversity!

Why?

MichaelMumsnet · 01/04/2019 07:46

Morning. The OP has left the building.

JenniferJareau · 01/04/2019 08:04

The good thing on baby names is people will outright tell you what they think. People in real life will 99% of the time be polite about that name to your face but will be thinking what they'd write on here.

ElizabethMainwaring · 01/04/2019 08:09

OP Dave started another thread asking for opinions on the name Sarch Clemens ('for a girl'). I think it must have been some sort of in joke. Who knows.

Tiramisu1 · 01/04/2019 08:51

Do they though? Or do they, as a previous poster suggested, criticise a name so that it doesn't become more popular?

JenniferJareau · 01/04/2019 10:10

Or do they, as a previous poster suggested, criticise a name so that it doesn't become more popular?

Personally I don't think one person on a forum could have that much power to change the popularity of a name.

GreatDuckCookery · 01/04/2019 10:12

Do they though? Or do they, as a previous poster suggested, criticise a name so that it doesn't become more popular?

That’s an odd theory. I’m past the baby stage so have no ulterior motive in giving my opinion on a name.

Sorry. THIS^ is tipping into paranoia.

Cbeebiesrehab · 01/04/2019 11:18

I do like the honesty of most posters but I do also think that some posters are deliberately unkind and take pleasure in it with a ‘just being honest hun’ kind of attitude when in reality, they are the mousey ones in the office being bullied to go make the tea. Keyboards are very empowering it seems.

GreatDuckCookery · 01/04/2019 11:56

I’m not mousey by any stretch. If I don’t like a name I will say so. Nothing to do with being behind a keyboard!
