What do you think of Amélie? I love the nickname Mimi.

Love both

mrsdavys · 16/03/2019 14:13

Not keen, sorry.
Just seems a bit dainty and frilly to my taste but that’s personal preference!

Didiusfalco · 16/03/2019 14:17

I like Amelie. I don’t think mimi is a natural nickname from it, sounds a bit forced. I do know a few with this name in the 7-10 age group, so I don’t think it’s unusual, but that may not be a factor for you.

AnnaSparks · 16/03/2019 14:19

Unfortunately an unusual name won’t get past my husband. As long as it’s not in the top 5 at this point, that’s good enough for me!

Oh no! It and it's variations are so so 'common'. It's gone from being a unique pretty name to something else totally!
I really wouldn't.

Littlechocola · 16/03/2019 14:23

It’s lovely.

QueenAnneBoleyn · 16/03/2019 14:25

Lovely name

AnnaSparks · 16/03/2019 14:26

Really? I knew it was popular, which is fine, but really don’t want a name that sounds “common”.

My grandmother is named Ama so I tried hard to find an honor name. Amelie was on my list too but it has become super popular and it just sounds too much like Emily to me. Which I have bad associations with. I'm now considering it for a possible middle name but I just didnt love love it for a first name. This and Amelia.

But if your husband likes popular names, I'd say this is a worthy choice! I love that it is French. I love the spelling with the accents!

BlueMerchant · 16/03/2019 14:43

Sorry OP. It's just my opinion. If you had asked a few years ago I'd have said it was beautiful. I'm just so 'over' it now and I can't explain the 'common' without sounding rude so I'll not tryBlush

AnnaSparks · 16/03/2019 14:45

@BlueMerchant no apology needed! I asked because I really would like all opinions, good and bad Smile

I teach/know so many girls called Amelie...it's very very popular (in my area anyway).

Talkwhilstyouwalk · 16/03/2019 14:51

It's ok. French name. Possibly a little weak for my liking.

AfterSchoolWorry · 16/03/2019 14:55

In my accent it sounds like Ahmelly to rhyme with smelly/jelly?

It's an awkward word to say!

MsTSwift · 16/03/2019 15:17

Extremely dull and over used. Sorry.

Slowcookervegan · 16/03/2019 15:28

So what have you decided? Yes or no?

DramaAlpaca · 16/03/2019 15:30

It's nice if you have a French accent.

Sophronia · 16/03/2019 17:12

Don’t like any of the overused Amelie/Amelia/Emily/Emilia names.

daisypond · 16/03/2019 17:19

A bit twee and bland and rather downmarket. Unless you’re French. Amelia or Emily are better.

RayaJambalaya · 16/03/2019 17:19

It's not 'common' in my opinion and it's a lovely name. Also my nn is Mimi (I'm almost 30) and it generally gets lots of compliments!

AnnaSparks · 16/03/2019 18:30

I’m from a French family (although I don’t actually speak French myself) so it’s not too much of a stretch. Although people say it’s popular, the stats seem to show it’s quite far down the top 100 - maybe it’s very popular in certain areas and not in others.

OP posts:
daisypond · 16/03/2019 18:37

Names like Camille and Naomi would also give you Mimi for short.

Dreamtheimpossibledream · 16/03/2019 18:54

VERY popular in my area - but it’s a pretty name.

SparkiePolastri · 16/03/2019 19:07

I don't think it's that regional. I'm in NZ and even I think it's 'done'.

I don't actually know a single one, but it's still part of their Emilia/Amelia overdone cohort of names.

It feels a little 90s as well, as isn't that when the movie came out.

ketchupormayo · 16/03/2019 19:17

Adore this name
