What do you think of Amélie? I love the nickname Mimi.

It's actually on my list and my NN were mimi but Ammy as well which I thinks pretty cute

AnnaSparks · 17/03/2019 22:29

Still like it despite the 50/50 feedback, so that’s got to be a good sign!

I wanted it for DD, however DHs step sister called her daughter Amelia a few months before DD was born 🙈

ChristinaW16 · 17/03/2019 22:38

My Amelie naturally became Ammy, although i never intended to shorten it. She's five and the only one in her year as far as I know (big school, 120 kids per year group). I still love her name, it's so pretty. Her twin is Rosa.

Antonin · 17/03/2019 22:52

I love it, such a pretty name and suitable for all ages.
I knew a girl from a French speaking family whose nn was Mimi from Anne Marie. I think Mimi is an ok nn for Amelie.

Marcipex · 18/03/2019 00:31

I think it's too similar to the nice but over used Emily.
And Mimi doesn't come naturally to an English speaker. I'm afraid they are usually shortened to Am.

nocoolnamesleft · 18/03/2019 00:38

Quite like it. Though would probably get shortened to Ammy, Am, Or Milly/Melly, rather than Mimi.

Boulezvous · 18/03/2019 19:16

I like it but I'm not familiar with current trends. I like a lot of French names - also Anais, Elodie, Mirreillle, Merisna. But I'm a bit pretentious.

Happyandglorious · 19/03/2019 08:16

I love it. If you love it. Don't be put off by it being a popular name.
The nn mimi is cute too.

WoahThereMama · 19/03/2019 08:19

I used to think it was a lovely name but now think it’s bland, unimaginative and dull as it’s incredibly popular and overused in my area which is a shame.

Itstartedinbarcelona · 19/03/2019 08:31

Amelie was 88/100 in the 2018 list of baby names so I don’t think it can be that common!! I kind of wish it was a bit more common as lots of people don’t know how to pronounce it when they meet DD (12). There was one other Amelie in her primary school and there are 2 others in her (1000+) senior school. Go with something you like op. It was the stand out name for DH and I and DD loves it.

nocluenoidea · 19/03/2019 22:44

Every time there is a thread about this name it winds me up. I don't have an Amelie so I'm not being defensive but I seriously think people should refer to the stats when claiming a name is 'so popular'.

It was number 72 in the 2018 rankings. I hardly think that is crazy popular!

TigerQuoll · 19/03/2019 22:48

No, it just sounds like you named her after the movie

SparkiePolastri · 19/03/2019 23:05

It doesn't really matter what it's 'official' ranking is, it is a well-known, popular, of-the-moment name. It will date to this era.

It's probably thought of as more popular than it really is, due to several similar sounding names, plus the ubiquitous Millie/Milly.

That's what people mean when they say it's popular.

nocluenoidea · 20/03/2019 00:54

The movie came out 18 years ago, so it's been around quite some time in the UK?! I think it depends on your definition of 'popular'. It's certainly not up there with the Amelias, Olivias and Sophies

TigerQuoll · 20/03/2019 04:41

Maybe it is different for us Aussies and Kiwis but I have never heard of anyone called Amelie, literally the only exposure is the movie. If she went travelling and wasn't French the assumption would be that her parents were weird obsessed fans

MyOtherProfile · 20/03/2019 04:49

Love the movie and the name. However while Amelie itself may only be number whatever in the top 100, there are so many children round here called Amelia or Amelie or Emily or Emilia that it does feel pretty common.

Depends on whether that matters to you or not.

foxtiger · 20/03/2019 10:10

I think it's a rather pretty name, and although it is said to be very fashionable I think I've only ever met two (both nice girls!) I don't think I would spell it with the acute accent in the UK, as everybody will leave it off anyway.

mothertobe789 · 20/03/2019 22:28

I think it's beautiful, I don't think it's popular either, I can't think of any.it was in my sister top two names when she was making my niece but she went for the other one.

mothertobe789 · 20/03/2019 22:29

Naming...not making lol

Madmarchpear · 20/03/2019 22:39

It's lovely. It's one of those names I'd love to be called. Very feminine but has a strong meaning . It's quite rare here in the North. I've only know one, it will prob be consigned to of its time with Isla, Mia, Evie etc but imo I'd rather that than a frumpy classic to prove middle classness. I prefer Ammy to Mimi. Mimi is a bit sex workerish imo.

mathanxiety · 21/03/2019 07:01

Makes me think of the word 'anomaly'.

I think it's wet.

Talkwhilstyouwalk · 09/05/2019 22:51

It sounds French to me so ok on a French baby. Bit random otherwise....

CodenameVillanelle · 09/05/2019 22:53

Amelie is so over.

Schnitzelvonkrumb · 09/05/2019 22:59

There are 2 in my DDs year (age 12-13) and 2 in my Ds year (age 8-9). I know a few others, i quite like it. Nn are Ammy or millie.
