Appreciate this style isn’t to everyone’s taste & ‘you won’t know what she’ll be like’ has been thrown around but then you don’t know if she’ll be sickly sweet when you call a little girl daisy? You may recognise me from the Connie or Frankie thread! Grin I still feel like I’m looking for that perfect cool name for our second little girl! Please give me all your amazing suggestions, you’ve all been so helpful so far!

The girl is "The Suitcase Kid" was Andy. I thought it was so cool! (We read it in class when I was 9/10)

@AuntMarch @etta0
I really like Andy, it was my first choice actually before we even found out it was a girl but DP doesn’t like it Sad

I think the name Matilda is really cool because she has a choice then- if she's more of a tomboy personality then she can shorten it to Matty but if she is more of a 'girly' girl then she might prefer to shorten it to Tilly. I like the idea of giving her options. I also love the unshortened name in its own right.

AuntMarch · 22/02/2019 20:56

I know Mati (Matilda) come to think of it. Never heard it before and thought it a bit odd, but I really quite like it now!

Pippathenippa · 22/02/2019 20:58

@katy1111 funnily enough we’ve been discussing that one today with the same 2 nicknames Smile DP likes Tillie but not so much Mattie/Matilda. I’m working on him! Great suggestion👍🏼

Would Jesse count as a typically boys name derived from a girls name? I’m pretty sure Jessie/Jessica or variants thereof was in use before the popularisation of Jesse as a male version? To labour on the boring mysogyny point...

PCohle · 22/02/2019 21:10

Jesse is the father of King David in the Old Testament. It's a very old male name.

Sessy19 · 22/02/2019 21:12

And to you, dear OP. You have a good collection of names thus far. If you’re interested, I like your style. And put forward my own suggestions, should you appreciate them 😊

Golda
Ida (variant on Ada, my best friend’s nan’ name-she is a good strong lass of 90 now!)
Nancy
Sorrel
Clem

I think, mysogyny or not, that a parent is so terribly privileged to be able to name a girl, that the ability to be creative and expressive in a girls name is a freedom not quite so offered for those with sons. Just my opinion of course, but nonetheless, I wish you well in finding the perfect name for your gal 😉x

Sessy19 · 22/02/2019 21:27

In the Old Testament, it’s Yishi. Jesse was the translation after the Protestant reformation.

PCohle · 22/02/2019 21:33

Yes. So not derived from a girl's name then.

Jude

A lovely lady I know from New Zealand is called Jude.

Twilightfanasy · 11/05/2025 18:15

Sam would be a cute name.
