Appreciate this style isn’t to everyone’s taste & ‘you won’t know what she’ll be like’ has been thrown around but then you don’t know if she’ll be sickly sweet when you call a little girl daisy? You may recognise me from the Connie or Frankie thread! Grin I still feel like I’m looking for that perfect cool name for our second little girl! Please give me all your amazing suggestions, you’ve all been so helpful so far!

I like Elliot for a girl, and Charlotte nn Charley.
Mila is another suggestion.

It is true that people seem to have an aversion to giving bots girls' names but I don't necessarily see it as a betrayal of the sisterhood to want a less "pretty" name. It may just be a matter of taste. People don't generally dress boys in floral dresses but this doesn't mean that if someone wants to dress their girl in jeans and a football shirt that they are denying that girls in floral dresses can achieve what ever they want. So why are you trying to insist that people should all like the same style of names?

Smurf123 · 22/02/2019 08:27

I like Ada from your list
Also like Alex and Noa

Bumblebeesmum · 22/02/2019 08:40

I agree that parents are keen to give stereotypically masculine names / toys / clothes to girls in the name of equality but they would never give their boys a traditionally girl’s name / dress them in pink / buy them make up and dolls
I completely agree that this is because a girl aspiring to sound and act more stereotypically male is considered progress whereas a boy who does the same is discouraged.

So I do get all that - but is it really acceptable to bully individual (presumably pregnant) women over this topic? I was upset on a thread the other day - I think people forget there are real humans posting here. Would you walk up to a pregnant stranger & put them down if they talked about these sorts of name choices?!

Bumblebeesmum · 22/02/2019 08:44

I think really versataille names are lovely. Charlotte can be Lottie or Charlie - Alexandra can be Lexi or Alex - Georgiana can be Georgie etc. these sorts of names let the child take their own path & reinvent themselves if they want to.

(My own children don’t have versataille names though!)

I love frilly & flowery names, although I would have called my girls Harper and Darcie.
I had two boys instead & struggled to pick their names as I’m not keen on boys names at all Blush so a boys name for a girl is a no from me!

Rose is lovely, ‘girly’ & classic to me!

longestlurkerever · 22/02/2019 09:12

I also like Rosa.

I’ve seen bullying go on on MN, that’s made me uncomfortable. But calling anything in this thread ‘bullying’ is ridiculous hysteria. Posters are expressing their views and some people feel quite strongly. That’s all.

People who get that upset by the internet need to stay off it.

Well Evan is a unisex name so...

Evan is a Welsh form of John.

Pippathenippa · 22/02/2019 10:46

There is a whole 2 pages in the book I’m reading dedicated to this type of name! It’s called ‘geezer names’ along with
International names
Cool nicknames
Cool middles
Neo yuppie
Place names
Bad/good girl/boy names
Artist names
Etc
It’s just a style choice. So I used the word ‘tomboy’ I would of got just as flamed if not more by using the word geezer on here! But in the real world... no ones that bothered!!

Sure, call your little girl Arthur or Errol. That'll teach the patriarchy Hmm

Pippathenippa · 22/02/2019 11:01

@pcohle I was actually considering Howard or Gary but thanks for your suggestions.

Hi,

I totally appreciate you wanting a cool, ungirly name. There are some lovely names that aren’t too girly. I’m the total opposite for names and love girly names, we’re struggling for our second. My little girl, Daisy, is very ungirly 😂 How about:

Ava
Abby
Harper
Isla
Izzy
Mabel

I have also heard Freddie and Teddy being used for girls.

Good luck naming your little one! X

Names that I've known used by both sexes in real life:

Dale
Jodie
Jordan
Eden
Jay
Macaulay

I don't think 'unfrilly' has to = masculine, much less making that equation for 'cool' Confused

Erin, Ruth, Nina, Rosa, Jane, Harriet. All short(ish) unfrilly names borne by strong (fictional or otherwise) role models.

Quintella · 22/02/2019 13:23

’Sidney. This name which conjures up images of thick glasses…dandruff on the shoulders….sounds, strangely enough nothing less than charming, nothing short of cool when applied to a girl. And so to can the other geezer names here: Barry, Ernest, Howard, Errol, Gary’

Seriously, give me a drag on whatever marvellous stuff it is that author is smoking!
