Girls name to honour Father in Law

Both mine and my partners dad's names are Malcolm. My partners dad is very poorly and will pass away soon before meeting our daughter who is due in April - we are heartbroken.

We are leaning towards Seren/na for a first name (not a definite yet), and her surname will double barrelled with 4 syllables and starting with T. Can anyone think of a way of honouring both of our dads in our daughters middle name? We are stuck, and also, very aware its not the best name.

Malina is the female Scottish version of Malcolm I believe

waxy1 · 14/11/2018 13:53

Malibu.

BumbleDevon · 14/11/2018 13:56

Malina is a lovely idea.

Malcolm means "servant of St Columba", so Columba (meaning "dove") is another possibility.

Columba, Paloma and Jemima all mean dove in different languages, if any of those appeal. The dove is a lovely symbol of peace, and a great tribute.

Finfintytint · 14/11/2018 13:59

Iona? Colomba link also.

PanannyPanoo · 14/11/2018 14:00

So sorry to hear about your father in law. How about something like May, Macy, or Maisie. Not a direct tribute but a way of honouring them both without your daughter having to explain her second name if she doesn't want to.

BumbleDevon · 14/11/2018 14:02

I also came back to say Iona - the island where the followers of St Columba were based.

moredoll · 14/11/2018 14:04

Iona is a great idea and goes very well with Seren.

Tinty · 14/11/2018 14:05

Malorie/Mallory

Serena Melina might be a bit much Smile

gingernutrichtea · 14/11/2018 14:10

Mallie is a lovely name and is on my list and that ties in with Malcom

GreatDuckCookery6211 · 14/11/2018 14:24

Malina is awful.

How about asking your FIL to choose a middle name for DD?

RosiePosies · 14/11/2018 14:41

Thank you all for your lovely suggestions.

@greatduckcookery he is no longer really conscious as of this morning unfortunately.

Sorry to hear that Rosie. What about Malia?

Fortysix · 14/11/2018 14:47

Caillie

GreatDuckCookery6211 · 14/11/2018 14:49

I'm sorry to hear that OP. Is there another way you could honour him? What was his birth month? Favourite place to visit? Colour? Something specific to just him.

mintyfresh00 · 14/11/2018 14:58

I would avoid Malina- anyone who works in healthcare will associate it with 'Melena' which is a descriptive of a type of poo.

Girliefriendlikesflowers · 14/11/2018 15:00

I'm a nurse and melina to me is blood filled diarrhoea, sorry.

Malia is nice though or Milla?

deptfordgirl · 14/11/2018 15:06

I had a friend at school whose middle name was Malcolm after her grandad. She thought it was very cool. She only had one older sister so I think her parents just decided to go for it whatever the gender!

RosiePosies · 14/11/2018 15:17

Iona's lovely - I have Scottish heritage so works well.

What is everyone's opinion on Mael? Pronounced Mow-il. The original version of Malcolm is Mael Colum.

So Seren Mael T-S....

I have no Welsh heritage at all so not sure if it's weird or not to use Seren.

I'm with @mintyfresh00 on not using malina - I had to put my sister off milena (partner Portuguese) as it's pronounced the same as Melaena which is the term for bloody poo and normally associate with a horrid smell and someone being very ill!

She said no one would know this - but I pointed out all health care professionals you ever come into contact with will!

I'm sorry to hear about your dad - it's a lovely way to honour him. How about mallorie? I think cute name in its own right too!

Hezz · 14/11/2018 15:23

Mael is nice.

Malcolma or Malanie

Malcina

GreatDuckCookery6211 · 14/11/2018 15:41

Not Malia. Awful, rough place in Crete!

Iona is pretty. A bit of a stretch to Malcolm though.

Picknickers · 15/11/2018 00:42

Seren Mallory is nice.

Unicyclethief · 15/11/2018 00:53

Mael is lovely. So is Seren, but pretty popular. I like Mael Seren.

giftsonthebrain · 15/11/2018 00:56

Just go with Malcolm, lots of little girls named Blaine, McKenzie etc.

Kokeshi123 · 15/11/2018 05:06

I would ask him to choose a girl's name that he liked.
