Fiona?

We want to call our dd Fifi, but it’s important to us that she has a more grown up name to use should she choose to.

I really like Fiona, but I’m wondering if people would consider it a bit dated?

We’re also considering Josephine, Sophie/Sophia, Felicity, and dh likes Ophelia (but I’m not convinced). I also don’t think any of those lend themselves to the Fifi nickname quite as well as Fiona!

Do you like Fiona? Or do you prefer one of the other names/have any other potential long names for Fifi??

*or. Why does my phone change or to it?

Namechangeforthiscancershit · 12/10/2018 15:40

^I don’t ever like insulting names or peoples name choices as they are people out inevitably called those names blush
So sorry Fiona’s of this thread!^

That’s ok- we didn’t choose it! Grin

I’ve never had an issue with my name. I get Fi a fair amount, Fifi is less of a good look on a 34 year old! But super cute for someone a bit younger! There were two of us in my year at secondary school but no others in the school as I remember.

Sorry if the negative associations anyone has with the name are from meeting me! Grin

Fiona is lovely and not too many about. Fifi ok as a pet name at home, not to my taste as a day to day name for others to call her, but that's your choice. It is a bit poodle-y!

DonkeysDontRideBicycles · 12/10/2018 15:55

I have only met three Fionas in my life, all sweet girls, only positive associations for me.

Think Tamara Ecclestone has a DD Sophia who is nicknamed Fifi.

RavenWings · 12/10/2018 15:59

Fiona is a gorgeous name, and not too common either.
Sophie - nice but bland and unimaginative.
Josephine - awful.
Ophelia - no.

Personally I'd put Fiadh in as an alternative, but I think it's an odd choice if you aren't Irish. Plus you'll get the Fear mispronunciation.

RavenWings · 12/10/2018 16:00

Forgot Felicity! Nice name.

MadeForThis · 12/10/2018 16:27

Like Fiona.

Also fionnuala

MollysMummy2010 · 12/10/2018 16:31

I have an 8yo Sophia, nn Fia as that’s how she said she’d name when she learnt to talk. Some of her friends call her Fifi but I think they will grow out of it!

Lidlfix · 12/10/2018 16:51

It's a classic and never dates nn is adorable. But I am Scottish and realise that the name's origins might make it more popular here than other parts of the UK.

I know Fionas of all ages and there has been one in every year of the middle sized secondary I teach in. Not one (or more) in every class just one per year group, I couldn't guess an age like I could with some names.

Sunflower321 · 12/10/2018 17:25

Lovely

Chocolatedeficitdisorder · 12/10/2018 17:44

I'm a Fiona of 50. I was bored at work recently and was idly looking through the first names of the female staff (secondary school). Fiona was the most common name, with 7 out of the women working there.

I don't mind Fi, but Fifi is too childish.

Polkasq · 12/10/2018 17:45

I like Sophia, Felicity and Josephine. Fiona is OK.

moredoll · 12/10/2018 17:47

I think it's lovely. It is a bit old-fashioned, but in a good way.

FairfaxAikman · 12/10/2018 17:53

I love it. It would have been part of DSs name if he'd been a girl.

TyrionLannistersShadow · 12/10/2018 17:59

I love Fiona, it's very pretty although any Fionas I know are called Fi for short. I'm not a fan of Fifi at all, sorry, it sounds like the name of a pet chihuahua.
How about Fiadh? It's an Irish name pronounced Fee-ah.

Topseyt · 12/10/2018 18:07

I like Fiona. Classic, timeless and strong.

Felicity is nice too, though sometimes gets shortened to Flick.

goldentrianglex · 12/10/2018 19:10

I love it, met a 40 year old Fiona and didn't think how old fashioned but what a beautiful name. She's often Fee I think it's a classic but cute too.

veeboo · 14/10/2018 07:26

@ronniemipperton I will probably be joining you shortly but also toying with giving the buses a break for the sake of my sanity. X

wizzler · 14/10/2018 07:50

Really like Fiona
Presume Phoebe could also give you a Fifi nn?

greencatbluecat · 14/10/2018 07:58

Lovely names, all of them.

funmummy48 · 14/10/2018 07:59

I like Fiona but prefer Josephine.

PrincessFiona1 · 14/10/2018 08:18

Finally made it!

Sadly I don't like my name. Always crops up on those 'names you hate most' threads along with Karen. (sorry Karens)

On the plus side there aren't too many about so it's unusual without being younique. Met very few others.

Interestingly it's not a name that seems to stick to my face, I get called A LOT of other first names. I don't know if that's a good or bad thing.

drumandthebass · 14/10/2018 08:31

Sophia is beautiful, but as someone else said I also think of Fiona Bruce and Fifi is very French poodle

Peridot1 · 14/10/2018 09:35

I came back on to suggest Phoebe but see I’ve been beaten to it. It’s one of my favourite names.

Sugarpiehoneyeye · 14/10/2018 10:04

Any thoughts OP ?
