Fiona?

We want to call our dd Fifi, but it’s important to us that she has a more grown up name to use should she choose to.

I really like Fiona, but I’m wondering if people would consider it a bit dated?

We’re also considering Josephine, Sophie/Sophia, Felicity, and dh likes Ophelia (but I’m not convinced). I also don’t think any of those lend themselves to the Fifi nickname quite as well as Fiona!

Do you like Fiona? Or do you prefer one of the other names/have any other potential long names for Fifi??

I know a couple of Fionas, both lovely, one Scottish. It is quite a 70s name but nothing wrong with that - it's pretty.

To be honest, they're both commonly known as Fee to friends. So if you don't like Fee, you might have to work hard to make FiFi a thing, especially if your DD doesn't end up being a natural Fifi.

Fiona is still in the running!

We’re not so sure on the Fifi nickname now though, as I don’t think that would last past the age of 5 or 6, so we probably shouldn’t base our entire name choice around it.

So we’ve branched out a little, and are also considering Naomi, Rowan/Rowena and Ramona (I like names with a long ‘o’ sound in them, if you haven’t noticed! - it’s one of the things I like about Fiona)

I know a little girl called Ramona who gets called Moany. I think it's lovely and sounds better shortened to Romy or even Mona.

I love Naomi and Ramona, both very chic. Not a fan of Rowan at all.

Re nicknames - I knew a Fiona who was affectionately called 'Nonie' (with a long 'o' sound). I think it originated in a younger sibling's attempts to pronounce her name.

Prefer Romana and Romane to Ramona which sounds very moany.

And I much prefer Josephine to any of your other suggestions.

Much prefer Sophie/Sophie, or Phoebe. Don't dislike Fiona on an adult but don't like it for a small child.

Great name .i think it's a classic lime 'Elizabeth' which is not linked to any particular generation.

All the fifi's I know are short for sofia. A see sophia on your list so not to disimilar.

I dont dislike fiona but I wouldnt say I like it.

Fiona is awful. Very clunky and just makes me think of Shrek. Not a pretty name at all.

I know a very cool and beautiful 20-year-old Fiona. She's the only one I know of that age and I know no younger ones. When I first heard her name, I did think it was perhaps a little dated, but that was years ago. It's a lovely name. Ophelia is horrid, but I like Josephine and Felicity, and Sophie, but it's been popular for some time.

All for giving a proper name rather than a shortened version of a proper name. To me, Fiona sounds a bit old fashioned but nothing wrong with that, it's a good solid name.

I like Fifi as a nickname. Fifi couod also be short for Sophia!
