What do you think?

OP posts:
Are your children’s vaccines up to date?

I went to school with a Briar, never thought anything of it. It was never confused for Brian, there were no Sleeping Beauty connotations among her peers (maybe adults thought this though?), and her nickname was Bree.
I think it is a really pretty name! Although I didn’t know about the shrub.

OrdinaryGirl · 07/10/2018 06:31

What @mathanxiety said:
It doesn't mean 'prickly shrub'. A briar literally is a prickly shrub.

I've only ever heard Briar used on spaniels and terriers. It's quite a popular name for posh people's dogs.

RedDwarves · 07/10/2018 06:57

It reminds me of Brer Rabbit too.

So yes, I also think of thorny bushes likes brambles.

Not a great thing.

Itchytights · 07/10/2018 07:10

Definitely not

Makes me think of Friar as in Friar tuck.

Briar reminds me of Blair as in Tony Blair

A definite no no there.

There are nicer names imo.

Cbeebiesrehab · 07/10/2018 08:40

Who on earth would ask a beautiful baby girl’s name and then say ‘what Brian?!’ Hmm
My cousin is called Bryony, goes by Bry, it suits her.
I think Briar is a lovely name. Probably wouldn’t put it with Rose though but another short middle name such as Briar Pearl, Briar Joy, Briar June etc

mathanxiety · 07/10/2018 08:52

Briars are like brambles. It's a word for a category of thorny, woody weeds that grow into thick, dense, impenetrable, bushy traps for plastic bags and other rubbish.

These people are trying to cut down a patch of them.

rhubarbfool · 07/10/2018 08:55

You might as well call her Bramble or Thistle or Prickle.

I think Bryony is beautiful, Bry as nickname?

Polkasq · 07/10/2018 10:13

Too much like Brian IMO

KateTTC123 · 07/10/2018 11:28

I think it's lovely for either a boy or girl :)

DramaAlpaca · 07/10/2018 12:35

It's truly horrendous. Briars are thorny plants in the undergrowth, roses have thorns so Rose as a middle name for Briar just sounds daft, plus it rhymes with liar & is similar to Brian. Just no.

BabySharkAteMyHamster · 07/10/2018 12:40

I know an adult Briar Anise.......I love it. It's a beautiful name.

TatianaLarina · 07/10/2018 14:25

Love love love.

A briar rose is a wild rose, Shakespeare called it Eglantine.

I love it, but prefer it spelt Bryher, like the island in the Scilly Isles.

I used to know a beautiful little girl with the name Bryher, and her surname was Rose, so she was Bryher Rose (which I always thought was gorgeous!)
