What do you think?

I prefer Bryher, which is the name of one or the Scilly Isles. I know a couple of Cornish girls called Bryher.

SoupMode · 06/10/2018 22:57

I like it, but think it will be constantly misheard as Brian.

birthdayparty · 06/10/2018 22:57

Don't like it, sorry. It sounds very unfeminine to me!

Littlefish · 06/10/2018 23:07

I prefer Bryher too. I know one and she's gorgeous and lovely.

Catsize · 06/10/2018 23:14

Briar Rose is the Wetherspoons in Birmingham.
Quite like Briar, but it will be misheard forever and people will think she's a very high-pitched Brian.

NoMudNoLotus · 06/10/2018 23:16

Bit weird.

buscaution · 06/10/2018 23:20

I'm not sure sleeping beauty legitimises Briar as a name. It's a fairy tale.

Sorry OP but I think it's really harsh, not to mention every time someone sees it in print they will wonder if the person is actually Brian or Blair.

SequinsOnEverything · 06/10/2018 23:23

I like it. I do immediately think of Briar Rose/sleeping beauty. But I think that's ok. Loads of children are named after fairytales/disney films.

AlliKaneErikson · 07/10/2018 01:00

I think of Briar Rose as one name (sort of without the hyphen, if that makes sense)- it sounds a bit ‘bare’ to me on its own.

RooCalledToby · 07/10/2018 01:03

It’s one downstroke away from Brian, which would put me off tbh.

noitsachicken · 07/10/2018 01:03

I know a Bryher, which as mentioned above is one of the Scilly Isles.
I also have a Bryony.
Neither gets called ‘Bri’ 🙄

AfterSchoolWorry · 07/10/2018 01:05

I love it. I love the sound of the word. Right mix of consonants and vowels. 😊

Gersemi · 07/10/2018 01:19

The poor kid will spend her life telling people it's not Brian. Don't do it to her.

Shadow1234 · 07/10/2018 03:20

Sorry, not too keen on Briar.
Prefer Rosa to Rose.

scrivette · 07/10/2018 03:31

Brian Rose is lovely.

scrivette · 07/10/2018 03:32

Although auto correct changes Briar to Brian as shown above Blush

TheDowagerCuntess · 07/10/2018 04:01

I really like it.

I know what Briar means, and it's a known (if not, common) girls's name, but I would avoid Briar Rose for the Sleeping Beauty connection.

I love a lot of the simpler B names - Briony, Brooke, Blythe, etc. I think they're less frilly than a lot of the more well-used names these days, but still feminine.

I say go for it, but perhaps with a more syllabic middle name - Elizabeth, Persephone/Penelope, Aurelia, Felicity, etc.

mathanxiety · 07/10/2018 04:03

It doesn't mean 'prickly shrub'. A briar literally is a prickly shrub.

mathanxiety · 07/10/2018 04:07

Briars are what you often find growing in gardens that have been neglected for years. People hack them down with machetes and then you have to dig them out.

And you can't inflict a Disney name like Briar Rose on a child.

There are so many other names out there. Even something like Ethel would be nicer.

SadieAB9 · 07/10/2018 04:14

I love it! The name Sleeping Beauty chose apparently! It's actually a very old fashioned name, not made up at all. Also Rachel Bilsons daughter is called Briar Rose and she's really cool!

SadieAB9 · 07/10/2018 04:16

Also, people won't think of Brian! Maybe a few adults might but how many children have a friend/sibling etc called Brian nowadays? It's got to be dying out. In fact there were probably more Briars named in the last few years than Brian's! I read recently that the name was gaining in popularity (although still uncommon). Whereas how many little baby Brian's have you heard of? (The Brian Rose comment about did make me laugh though!)

Rtmhwales · 07/10/2018 05:06

Briar Rose is Sleeping Beauty (but also Aurora depending on the version you read..). Not uncommon as a girls’ or boys’ name in North America. I like it. None of the Briars I know have been called Bri.

ThroughThickAndThin01 · 07/10/2018 05:52

I’ve never heard it before. I love it.

Miltonkeynesmummy · 07/10/2018 06:06

Prefer the Cornish spelling if Bryher. Quite a popular name in the south west as people have said because of the Isles of Scilly. I think it's elegant.

ReginaPhalange89 · 07/10/2018 06:12

I don't like it, sorry. I have two thoughts when I hear it , It instantly made me think of sleeping beauty (even before I read the Rose part lol.) It was my favourite film as a child but it still doesn't make me like it as a baby name .
It also was making me think of Robin hood for some reason so I had to Google, it's Friar Tuck it's making me think of 😂 don't know why.

It's also too much like Brian for me, which is also not a nice name lol.

So, no sorry, I don't like it !
