Alicia?

A - liss - e - a
Or
A - lee - sha

I love the first pronunciation but hate the second. Is there another way some might spell it so it’s more obviously pronounced the first way?

My cousin is Alysia, just one S.

BatBelle · 05/10/2018 23:46

Ah-Lee-see-ah

NarcolepticOuchMouse · 05/10/2018 23:58

First way, I knew an Alicia and that's how she pronounced it.

SundayGirls · 06/10/2018 00:00

I would pronounce it A-liss-ee-ah but I know just as many would pronounce it A-leesh-ee-ah. I personally prefer A-liss-ee-ah but each to their own.

SequinsOnEverything · 06/10/2018 00:07

A liss ee a

Even though I know a girl spelled that way and pronounced aleesha. I automatically read it phonetically.

SneakySneaky · 06/10/2018 00:53

Aleesha

stickygotstuck · 06/10/2018 08:26

First one.

Alyssa is lovely too, but they are not the same name. If, like me, you are bothered about the meaning, Alicia means "Truth". Lovely name.

Rebellia · 06/10/2018 09:14

I would pronounce it Al-i-cee-a at first sight.

I think it depends on context though - in the very white, upper middle class Home Counties town I come from, the girls I knew with that name all pronounced it A-li-cee-a.

In slightly more ethnically diverse, working class areas, I think it's more likely to be pronounced Aleesha.

ImNotonLinkedInNo · 06/10/2018 10:05

I read it as aleethee-a just to throw another option in

Sunflower321 · 06/10/2018 10:52

It's tough because English has more than one way to pronounce many words/names.

In many other languages both Patricia and Alicia are pronounced Pat ree zia and Al ee zia.

But in English it's often Patrisha and Alisha.

Azure83 · 06/10/2018 11:02

That's precisely why Alicia never made it on my shortlist, I love the first pronunciation but was worried everyone would say it 'the wrong' way. How about Alice instead?

GreyhoundzRool · 06/10/2018 11:05

Was at school with a girl with this name written Alicia and pronounced Aleesha so I would generally pronounce it like that

seeyouhen · 06/10/2018 11:11

It's A-lee-sha. I don't know why this is even up for debate. Words in the English language that have cia in them = sha.

Social, appreciate, pediatrician, alopecia, artificial, beautician, clinician, financial, special...

shaggedthruahedgebackwards · 06/10/2018 11:15

Yeah, because the English language always follows hard and fast rules with no anomalies Wink Hmm seeyouhen

seeyouhen · 06/10/2018 11:19

Hmm right back at you shaggedthruahedgebackwards

It's A-lee-sha unless you want to be pretentious then it's A-liss-e-a or A-lee-see-a.

Mum2OneTeen · 06/10/2018 11:26

All-eece-ee-ya

daisyrosegem · 06/10/2018 11:27

The spelling for the way you'd like it pronounced is Alyssia

SoupDragon · 06/10/2018 11:29

It's A-lee-sha.

In your opinion but not in that of many others.

Anyway, by your logic it would be Alisha to rhyme with Patricia. Unless you say Patreesha ...?

catdogfish · 06/10/2018 11:36

Just spell it Alesha like Alesha Dixon. Then not problem 😊

Yellowcar107 · 06/10/2018 11:37

My cousins name is Alysia, pronounced the first way.

If I say the name OP suggested I would pronounce it second way.

Kool4katz · 06/10/2018 11:45

Never ever heard it pronounced Aleeesha.
It's always been A-liss-ee-a.

Sunflower321 · 06/10/2018 11:59

Actually yes it should be Al isha like Pat risha in English.

Orlande · 06/10/2018 12:06

I prefer Alissia but have heard equal numbers of Aleeshas and also one Aleethea

llangennith · 06/10/2018 12:10

The name Alicia used to be pronounced Al-is-ear. Like the ballerina Alicia Markova.
It dropped out of fashion about 50 years ago then Alicia Keys became popular about 20 years ago and she pronounced her name Aleesha. So everyone thought that's how you pronounce Alicia.
I like the old pronunciation, much prettier.

2doubles · 06/10/2018 13:08

It's A-lee-sha

In your opinion but not in that of many others

The name the OP is looking for is Alyssia.
